I find this very disturbing on many levels. I myself have a AKC Boston Terrier and 2 cats, who are like family members. It makes me wonder how this could have gone so long unreported. It also makes me ask the question "Do humans have any of these same ingredients in our food?" And if so are we also being keept in the dark? I fell horible for all the pet owners who have to undergo this tradity. And the really sad thing is we have to wait to see if this affects our pets. My boston has been really lathargic the last 2 days and my brothers Boston has been drinking water and urinating like crazy. Is this company prepared to pay all the vet bills incured by the public? They can not replace the beloved pets that they have killed. Is this an indication of what would happen if humans were involved?

my pom got sick and i took him to the vet the doc thought he had the flu, he gave med. and i took him home 2 days later my baby was dead , when it started i noticed he was horse when he barked and then he wouldnt eat and sleep alot and threw up alot i couldnt keep any thing in him i gave him baby food and i tried every thing i knew this happened in a matter of a week that i noticed a problem. he was in great heath and only 6 yrs old i was so upset that this has happened i blamed my vet and shared a few words with my vet. i cant beleive that this has happened the same thing seems to have happened to alot of other animals this is a shame. the companies should have to pay for what they have done! my heart broke when i woke up and my sweet little baby was dead some people may thing it just a dog or a cat but they are our family and even they are animals we treat them like children and love them this is heart breaking but i am glad i really know what has happened. and i plan to do something about it.

I was reading up on the pet food recall. I can't believe what I am reading. I read that Iams & a few other company's use caged up cats & dogs for testing at their plants. The New Jersey plant got reports of tainted food the week of February 19th & tested it on their animals in which 7 died. Then WHY wasn't this recalled then?
What is going on here? My aunt lost her 2 cats last week. I am very thankfull my 2 cats & dog are ok(so far). They were eatting Friskies can & Mighty Dog can in which I stopped feeding that to them. Their dry food will have to be good enough for now. Did you know if your cat or dog is sick or died you should report this to the FDA? That's what I read on their web site. There is a number for each state. Come on people, lets do something about this. Everyone is asking "what should we do". Call you local news papers & tv news networks. Get the story out about how many pets have died from the tainted food. Right now the news is stating 10 animals & most news programs are only showing Iams. People need to know the truth.

A few weeks ago, one of my cats (Spicey) stopped eating and drinking water, after three days we took her to the vet, and her kidney enzimes and white blood count was very high. The vet thought she was going into kidney failure...luckily they were able to save her after treating her for four days...My cats only eat IAMS cat food, and I know now what the cause of her sickness was...we always thought that by feeding our pets the "better and healthier" brand of food, we were prolonging their lives...my question to our vet will be: "Now that most of the major brand of healthy cat and dog foods have been recalled, what exactly are we supposed to feed our pets?"

This should be a class-action lawsuit, and my sympathies go out to all of the people who lost their pets in this fiasco...

I breed Boxers and I have lost TWO litters of puppies to this! I see a class action lawsuit coming out of this, and I would like my name to be on it! These people have cost me over $7000! Not to mention the price I paid for the food itself. I heartily agree that someone should be held responsible and pay for this!

I learned of the recall on Saturday morning. I had just had one cat die two days prior from kidney failure and had rushed a second cat to the vet that morning. I am likely going to loose this second cat because I have exhausted my financial means to treat him. I think Menu Foods should be required to compensate for vet bills. I know they won't compensate for pain and suffering because our lovely justice system sees pets as "property". It angers me to see the articles say "10 animals have died" becuase I know the numbers are far greater than that.

Early on March 17th my 8 year old siamese cat, Cocoa, died at our vets office. He had become sick the Tuesday before, went to vet wednesday, sent home with medicine, her thinking some kind of flu bug, by thursday night much worse, back to vet friday morning. Her findings were very grime. It turns out the IAMS can food we had tried with a new cat we had was on the recall list. That cat turned her nose up to the stuff, so we decided to let our 3 other boys have it. Well only one ate it and now he is dead...it hurts really bad!!! This was a house cat that was very healthy, never been sick in his 8 years with us...I feel like I killed one of my kids!!! Now I'm watching all the other cats(5) like a hawk....they didn't eat this stuff, but it makes me afraid...what is safe...as for our dogs none of their food is on the list...but it just makes us wonder. I'm ready to make my own food for them.....anyone have recipes for both cats and dogs. Most of my animals eat dry food, can was used as just alittle extra treat, other than for our new adopted cat(she had dental problems and needed softer food). I hope word gets out about the true death toll, not the 10 we hear about on the news! Any ideas on food let me know...BKel53@aol.com
Respectfully, Becky in Yucca Valley/Palm Springs, CA

Four of my cats have died this year within months of each other, all suffered from the above symtoms. I fed them adult Iams in the orange bag from wal-mart. that was their favorite food.
I miss them dearly and it brings tears to eyes to find out now it was probrably their food that sickend them. if I only knew sooner. I'm so sorry Tosha, Bittie, Babygirl and my big boy Tickey.
I love and miss my babies.my heart goes out to all other pet owners that have lost theirs.

Love and God Bless

My precious 14 year old, part Siamese, cat, Bubby, died recently. He had developed diabetes about 8 months age and when he got sick, I thought it was the diabetes. I am an RN and I thought at the time that he "went" awfully fast and wondered about that. The first thing was the vomiting and that was followed by the complete renal failure. He was playing just a day or two before this horrible thing hit him. I had changed from Friskies and went back to the Special Kitty because he didn't seem to like the Friskies as well. Little did I know that I was poisoning him. I loved him so much and I miss him every day. He was my little lover boy. He was getting old, but he might have lived several more years. Part of my heart has gone with him.

I don't believe all the products on the list are "tainted". Some were recalled simply because they are manufactured in the same plant and they're not taking any chances. I used to work at Menu Foods. I actually mixed the ingredients together, according to a formula provided. THEY ARE NOT ALL THE SAME FORMULA. They may contain some of the same ingredients, but the "premium" brands do use some higher grade meats and less "fillers". Some provide more vitamins and nutrients. This is all very unfortunate, and there are fingers to point. When I worked at Menu, we had a problem with spots appearing on the chunks. We did many tests and changed suppliers for some of the dries. The spots went away. As far as I know, there were never any pets in danger at that time. But when a problem came up, we always did what we could to fix it as soon as possible. This is the result of the wheat gluten supplier, but all the companies that they supplied and the name-brand labels on the products will be the ones that suffer the most financially, while many pet owners will have to suffer this tragedy on a more personal level.

We got a new puppy on January 31st. Sophie was a tiny 1 lb. Maltepoo puppy. Full of life and vigor. The breeder gave us a can of Nutro chicken, rice and oatmeal formula Natural Choice Puppy food. She said to put this with the Nutro small biteds dry food. On the third day of having Sophie she started acting listless. We rushed her to the vet and we were told it was low blood sugar and she was dehydrated. We returned to the breeder who told us she was not dehydrated. We also stopped on the way home at my doctor's office and saw my doctor. She also said that Sophie did not appear dehydrated. My doctor is an interist. Three days later we were back at a new vet and hepronounced her fine. By the weekend (day 10 of owning Sophie) she started vomiting and would not keep andy food down. We were then instructed to use a syringe to get her to eat. Poor Sophie. If it turns out that the food was bad we forced her to eat it.
Sophie wen back to the vet again and then again and again. 20 days after we first brought Sophie home she died in my arms. It was so sad and possibly preventable. The vet was totally shocked when I called him. He figured it must have been something congentital and the breeder thought it might have been the vaccine. I want to know why this happened. She was the light of our lives for the short time we had her. She weighed only 1 lb. but she meant the world to us.

WE have new kittens that ate this food.

If CBS/AP are so concerned--hows about telling folks where they should physically return the food, at least?

Is that too much news to print???

Luckly--our cats didn't like it much and kept begging fot their dry crunchy food.

On Wednesday I had my cat put to sleep because he was suffering from renal failure. I didn't normally feed him canned cat food but he had had surgery on his mouth and the vet recommended Iams wet food during his recovery. He stopped eating and grew listless and lethargic within days but the vet chalked it up to him having a sore mouth and sent him back home. I continued to feed him the food through a syringe as recommended by the vet. By the time they finally took his symptoms seriously it was too late, the damage to his kidneys was too extensive. I just found out the food he was eating was from the recalled batch. Whether his renal failure was caused by the tainted food or something that happened during surgery (his pre-surgical test results were all in the normal range) the end result is devastating. My heart goes out to all of you others who have lost your beloved pets.
