My college didn't have a greek system - cliques kind of formed based on major/faculty and/or which dorm you lived in or what extra-curriculars you participated in.

I don't have anything against DePauw or the greek system in general, I took issue with the fact that gt1003 seemed to revel unapologetically in her 'lookism' and about how bad she feels for her and what this story means for her and her sorority and her image and her popularity.

This is in contrast to the women who were rejected apparently because of their looks, some of whom are now so depressed their missing classes. These is the story I personally find more compelling . . .

What's wrong with a little tidying up the old sorority house? They can have whatever ideals they wish. Maybe these rejects can form their own house, maybe call it "Two Bag-ga Porkchop" or something. You know, revel in it a little.

It is a sweet defense of greek life that INmike84 offers. And, true that at most schools the greeks have a higher GPA than independents. But, it is also true that Delta Zeta is not alone in their woes and mistreatment of human beings. The whole system is set up to discriminate. Acting like that isn't the case is just ridiculous. I was in Delta Zeta and it was better than most of the others on our campus but it was still set up to discriminate. Stand up and speak for the truth. Tell us what your recruiting discussions consist of and how everyone you ask to be a member is only considered for how interesting they are as a human being. I challenge you to be honest!

I wanted to point out that people are making wild assumptions about DePauw which couldn%u2019t be further from the truth. Sororities at DePauw have a higher average GPA than all women on campus, and fraternities at the university have a higher average GPA than all men on campus. So, I%u2019m sorry to burst your bubble, but greeks on this campus aren%u2019t a bunch of dumb bimbos and jocks. They comprise about 70% of the student body and hold a vast majority of campus leadership positions. They are athletes, musicians, academics, artists, and everything in between. Until this national organization stepped in like this, there was a chapter for everyone.

So, I ask you to quit making such misinformed generalizations and look up some facts. Clearly there are many anti-greek people reading this article. Is our greek system elitist or outdated? Perhaps %u2013 but the values and positives it carries with it at a school like DePauw are irreplaceable. You%u2019d be amazed if you actually learned something about DePauw and its rich greek tradition. It is just too bad that a national organization can come in such an abhorrently irresponsible way, and highlight such a negative and isolated example of greek life at DePauw.

That is only mentioned really briefly in the NY times article which is not the point at all of the article
It sure looks like the DZ organization have made decisions about appearance which what the whole article is about. So do they admitt dismissing members because of "looking socially awkward"?
I love the fact they immediately try to protect there diversity numbers, but don't mention the real point of the story.

Fraternities and Sororities are inherently biased by their construct, and even prejudicial fundamentally. Hazing, exclusion, racism, humiliation, extortion characterize even the best of them. The history is dismal. They are a waning chapter in academia and need to be retired. All students need to find other participative pursuits in their college involvement.
