University Of Illinois Drops Controversial Native American Mascot
- "If they showed the leprechaun passed out drunk then I might say wait a minute."
MITYWHITY, the point is that others ARE saying wait a minute. Just because their reasons for doing so don't match yours doesn't mean they're wrong.
Not to mention that while the Irish WERE treated like "dog squeeze" (not anymore of course), they were not enslaved, slaughtered en masse, killed off with biological weapons and forced to walk hundreds of miles from their ancestral homes and put on barren land to rot - to this day. They might be just a tad more sensitive about current portrayals of their people than you are about yours. - Reply to this comment
- Love how the crackers on this list are outraged that their list of racist mascots are slowly dwindling. "How dare Native American groups and suppporters force a college team to stop offensive portrayals of their own people! Didn't they think how upsetting this is to us whiteys?"
Also love how two of the crackers who put on that costume are now suing on "free speech" grounds. Well, maybe the KKK can fund their legal defense or something. I think them suing is almost as ludicrous as those guys suing "Borat" because they got drunk, signed a waiver, and got filmed talking about how great slavery was. - Reply to this comment

Hmmm. Maybe they can replace him with a black slave mascot? - Reply to this comment
- The NCAA in 2005 deemed Illiniwek %u2014 portrayed by buckskin-clad students who dance at home football and basketball games and other athletic events %u2014 to be an offensive use of American Indian imagery and barred the university from hosting postseason events.
This is illegal........ it violates "freedom of expression"........... what's next New England having to drop the "Patriots"........
We are getting to extreme, (liberal) in America...what other rights will we have to give up next????? - Reply to this comment
- Being descended from three Nations and of English descent I find the elimination of Chief Illiniwec a poor choice. How will the Illini Nation be remembered now as they fade out of view into the history books? Remember "To the victor go the spoils" and the history books will probably write them out of existence. I am not politically correct nor will I ever be. It is my right to voice my opinion as it is yours... It is a sad day when sports leagues blackmail institutions in order to achieve their desired results. I grew up in the area and fondly remember when Chief Illiniwek came to our school. It so inspired me to further research my heritage. I wish those whining would just chin up and use the resources available to them in a positive manner instead of denegrading someone else with their "perceived correctness".

- As a matter of fact Humancitizen, that's probably what you need is to be bent back in shape by some well-endowed stud, but I'll defer that to another volunteer. I'd rather leave you all f'ed up in head like you are now in lesbo-land.

- Lades and gentlemen, we have lost our sense of humor. We can't laugh at ourselves or find humor where it should be found anymore. We're insulted at the slightest hint that someone may think less of us because there is a characterization of our race, our color, or our faith. It is sad that our pride has become so fragile.

- Easy Human, you don't want six and a half feet of hulking muscle and one-eighth of a ton of glorious manflesh standing on your hairy chest. Besides, that might mess up your flannel shirt!

- What a sad day for tradition and symbolism. The Chief was not an insulting racist logo like Chief Wahoo of the Cleveland Indians, or the Washingon Redskins! If any of the Illini tribe had still existed, the U of I could have bought their approval like other schools did (Florida State Seminoles). But there were no tribal members to contact. I have never understood the mind-set of the NCAA. They campaign against the Chief instead of worrying about graduation rates of student-athletes. The NCAA sits back and gets rich off the backs of college students. This politically correctness is out of control.

- I'm Irish and the "Fighting Irish" doesn't bother me. The Irish were treated like dog squeeze too. But we ain't a cryin'! If they showed the leprechaun passed out drunk then I might say wait a minute. I feel it's appropriate to celebrate the ferocity of a people group especially concerning a competetive sports team. Oh well.
