We do have free speech in this country, just as you 'thought'. But 'free speech' doesn't mean you can just say or do anything without consequences. You have to be responsible (sorry more big words) for your actions. And you have to be respectful enough to understand that this sort of behavior isn't tolerated. - Reply to this comment
- I thaught we had free speach in this country. If you want to throw a party and make fun of some group of people, well its a free country. If blacks or mexicans or any one else are free to call me a "White Boy" I am free to call them a nig ger or a wet back.... If you don't like it then maybe you should watch what YOU say.

- I think white college students should officially be banned from eating fried chicken

- ...And another thing, while I am thinking about it - I don't care if you think this was 'racist' or just a 'joke'. The fact is its DISRESPECTFUL. Does anyone remember learning that lesson when they were younger? DISRESPECTFUL to people like; Ella Fitzgerald, Jackie Robinson, Condalezza Rice, Bill Cosby - people who have worked hard to overcome the obstacles that DISRESPECTFUL people have put in front of them.

- You have to look at those ridiculus pictures on thesmokinggun.com - and think of one thing. These are the people that will be leading this country - thats the truly scary part.
If it were my kid pictured in there - he wouldn't have to worry about the school kicking him out - I would do it for them.
He would work a little and see how the world really operates. - Reply to this comment
- As a former Tarleton student, and to my knowledge, the only African-American little sister of this fraternity, I am deeply hurt. Done behind closed doors, yes, but it really defames the school and the students that exemplified good character and integrity in years past. The fact that, according to Google News, this story has been carried in over 150 published outlets shows that it is no longer a Tarleton story. In the minds of many it's much bigger than the actions of those students. I fear that Tarleton is symbolic of a much larger issue. The Smoking Gun show pictures of a similar party held last week at the University of Connecticut. The University of Texas held a similar event in the fall and the kids were reprimanded. Tarleton is the poster boy for insensitivities that seem be sanctioned on campuses throughout the country.

- I find this story humorous, actually. Sometimes life is suppose to be fun and not over-analyzed. People take things too seriously at times. Do you think I get ticked off when there are stereotype jokes made against my race? No, I laugh at them everyday when I hear the jokes. Watch "Mind of Mencia" sometime, it's hilarious. If these kids are punished in some way for this party it will be an over-reaction to create good publicity...

- As a student from Tarleton State University, I would like to thank those who have commented so far for not trashing my university. Those students are not a representation of the student body of TSU, and the events are certainly not a reflection of our school's culture. It seems inconceivable that such insensitivities are still seen nowadays, but I must remind people that very similar events have occurred in the recent past, including a "Bullets and Bubbly" party at the University of Connecticut Law School and a "Ghetto Fabulous" party at the University of Texas (in the relatively liberal city of Austin). This goes to show that such incidents are not instances of "southern racism" and should not be regarded as such.
