- After watching the news about Iraq -- and now a possible draft -- on democracynow.org, then on CNN, then on CBS, I really really really need a break from it.
Thank GOD! for the Daily Show and the Colbert Report on Comedy Central. It's about the only thing that keeps me from wanting to blow me poor head off!
I may travel overseas to Germany and such soon, and I've been considering wearing a custom-made t-shirt for the occasion.
On the front of the t-shirt it would say, "Shoot Me!"
And on the back of the shirt, it would read, "I'm an American!"
Lord knows there's plenty of muslims and such that are quite righteously pis*ed off at us!
Now, on top of a possible reinstatement of the draft, I've seen where former U.N. Weapons Inspector Scott Ritter says that his sources in the CIA and such are all telling him that it's not a question of IF we will attack Iran -- it's WHEN!
Anyone care to wager whether Bush will go down as our country's worst president ever...? - Reply to this comment
- I agree with the comment "Nothing is beyond these neocons". They have shown that time and again they are above the law. Do something more than protest you are going to be a threat to National security and you are going to be an enemy combatant with no basic habeas corpus right even. Watch out.

- Wireferee
As a %u201Cteacher%u201D when you were having this discussion with your students and most of them said they would move to Canada or Mexico if the draft came back, I sincerely hope you told them to go ahead and move. As a matter of fact I will tell them, get the hell out of the United States you cowards and after all this is over, don%u2019t even think of coming back. You denounced your country when you defected, now stay the hell gone.
Oh yes, when your children ask you %u201Cwhat did you do during the war daddy?%u201D You can tell them what a coward you were and how sneaky you were when the draft returned. Man, you will be a hero and above all such a roll model for them. They will be so proud of their father.
Wireferee, do you sincerely think a draft will divide the country? A draft might just be the one single thing that will unite this great nation. Without the draft you might just as well been speaking in German or vietnamese Wireferee, have you registered?
NOTE: Mandatory registration for the draft was suspended in 1975, but resumed in 1980 after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. About 13.5 million men are now registered with the US Government as potential draftees. News http://dailytelegraph.news.com.au/story.jsp?
The currently operative Presidential Proclamation seems to be number 4771: Proc. No. 4771 of July 2, 1980, 45 Fed. Reg. 45247

TROUPS GOING BACK FOR A SECOND TOUR OF DUTY - Reply to this comment
- Certainly there's no precedent for it, but that wouldn't stop these clowns. Also they'll only attempt it if a democrat is elected. If someone like McCain is elected there'll be no need. the problem is that i think so many Americans are so hungry for change that they'll swing in a completely opposite direction (which I personally have no problem with) and elect someone like Obama. At that point when the neocons see their power slipping away they'll be like a cornered animal and be very unpredictable and dangerous. If Obama is running he needs to declare now and get Secret Service protection. On top of that he needs to hire his own security people too. Cheney and the neocons are not above political assassination to keep power. They have proved they already think their above the law, so taking out an opponent would not be beyond them.

- Oh I saw the evolution word, but I was a adding a comment that, with the restrictions people like Cheney want to put on speech, that anything beyond street protests might be interpreted by them as fomenting revolution, which oddly enough considering how we were founded, is a crime here. Still if Bush doesn't back down, then I'll take the chance and advocate/join in revolution because with the neocons holding onto power with a death grip (they're not going to give it up in 2008 without bloodshed if a democrat is elected), fighting to get our government back may be the only choice they leave us.

- In case President Bush needs it.
In 2009.
Hmm. Maybe I'm missing something here.

No you're not missing anything. I can absolutely promise you that Rove has his fevered little brain hard at work right now trying to figure out a way to suspend the 2008 elections and keep Bush president. Perhaps an all out war with Iran would do it? There's one coming in a few months if Bush has his way. After all Bush could then declare that the situation is far too dangerous to go through a change of Commanders in Chiefs, suspend the constitution (which he has already said publicly that he doesn't have to obey during a time of war anyway) and refuse to surrender the White House. Don't think they have the gall? Remember they had the gall to kidnap people from other countries, transport them to secret prisons, hold them without charges indefinitely and torture them, in some cases to death. To say nothing of telling bald faced lies that led to the deaths of tens of thousands of people in Iraq and 3000 of our troops. They have more then enough gall to declare Bush president for life. Just watch them try. - Reply to this comment

I understand that protesting, sadly, didn't help before the war, but there are far more people who have come over to the right side now, so it might help now. Besides even though we still have freedom of speech (for now anyway) advocating open revolution is still frowned on, though it's a position I do support if Bush doesn't back down. - Reply to this comment
- Really think we need more troops, but have two important points to make;
1. When I was in the AF there was too many people there then, that was given the choice to go to jail and do their time or to join the military. They military learned the hard way ,why not to do this. Believe there are enough intelligent people in society to stop a draft from being implemented. now. Our kids have enough to worry about in Iraq without sending them a few of our societies problem individuals. Its not that you would ask yourself; why should I cover their ***?, you would know they would not cover yours. We need to keep enlistment voluntary.
2. Can see why more funds have to be allocated to the war effort, but more troops equals more veterans. Simply stated, take care of the veterans we already have before you add more. The VA centers could not properly help all the veterans from past wars, not much has changed. How about adding a few billion in emergency funding for veterans affairs FY 2007. Some of our kids are on waiting lists to recive a standard 15 minute appointment for medical treatment at VAMCs that are over booked, understaffed and under funded. - Reply to this comment

- A draft will be different this time, itll include females!!!! If not included in first draft, women
will be inluded as a matter of Equal Rights. - Reply to this comment
At least the talk of draft gets all the bumper-sticker patriots to take a deaper look at whether we should be in Iraq anymore. It's fine for them if someone else has to make the sacrifice but let them consider puting theirs and or their children's lives where their mouths are. I also think we should seriously discuss raising taxes to pay for this war. Right now we send the children of the poor to fight and borrow the money from China to pay for it.- Reply to this comment

- One last comment from me--during that discussion with my students around Veteran's Day, the other common statement was that they would not go if drafted for the War in Iraq. Most of my students said that they would move to Canada or Mexico. If the draft is reinstated, which this test seems to be indicating, you are going to see a more divided country than the current red and blue America. Young and old, men and women, left and right...we will all be divided, violently, I'm sure.
Leave the draft alone. If you cannot get people to volunteer for your army, pull out of Iraq. Once Bush leaves office in '08, people will join again...people just don't want to go to Iraq. I don't...thank God I'm now 26. - Reply to this comment
- Hear they're going to "practice" on the republiKKKon party first. Many airlines are reporting heavy airline and train ticket purchases to Canada and Cuba.

- That's true wireferee. During Vietnam there were plenty of g*ay men in the military. Funny how when they really need to fill the ranks it's no big deal, but when they want to get a ll self-righteous then g*ay men need no longer apply.
Hypocrites. - Reply to this comment
- This morning ncolsens said that you would be able to get out of the draft by saying you're gay. As a gay man, I have a gut feeling that if the draft came back you would see "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" quickly disappear. *** would be the first people this president would want to go to fight in a deadly war like Iraq.

- I say if they are going to reinstate the draft, then we include women in the draft. If women want to be equal in all ways, they should be included in the draft. As a teacher, we debated this in class, and my students were near unanimous in stating that women should be included.
I don't know if someone discussed this already, as I didn't read all four pages of comments. I apologize if it is redundant. - Reply to this comment
- Our Country is Fascist and NOT a Democracy.
The bumper stickers should have read :
Support our WAR.
I don't know what Game they are playing telling us about this test.
Could they be getting ready to reinstate the Draft? Considering that our Government LIES to us constantly, I think they are reinstating the draft. - Reply to this comment
