Is this really what it has come to? Having this device placed into new cars being built is just plain offensive to the American way. Requiring that an American citizen must blow into a breathalizer before operating a motor vehicle is absurd. This is the land of the free. I do not in anyway condone driving drunk but for this organization to actually beleive that people of this country are going to throw out our right to drive a car without MADD steping in, they have another thing coming.

I am not crazy about MADD now and I have two children. A daughter now 29 who started driving when she was 23 (Mom was in no rush for her to start driving) and a son 8. I do not drive, never have. As long as they hype bad statistics I will not support them there is a big difference between 7441 for alcohol, drugs, and prescriptions combined and 13000. I also have to wonder if this is just a money making scheme that in the end takes finances and public awareness away from issues that could save lives and limbs. If that is the case it really is wrong.

Hey shingles1

Do you note by any chance the hypocrisy in your own statement as you berate the individual who's remarks you disagree with?
Example: "....piece of S***"
"...hollow...empty person..." etc.
You're slamming this individual with insulting names for having slammed someone else for having done the same.
I COULD continue this cycle by calling you a F**** hypocrite - but I think you get the point.

Waiting until a drunk has driven a car before performing an arrest compares to waiting before a burglar has entered your home before securing your home. I wasn't crazy about MADD 20 years ago, until I acqired children of my own. Airbags cost about $500 per car according to WikiCars and saves 6000 lives each year. This proposed technology to prevent ANY car from starting without positive ID AND alcohol-free breath test results, should cost about the same or less. GO FOR IT!! WITH EVERY CAR!! Talk to any police officer who has arrested and processed drunks. They need our help and support!! Social discipline has not changed much in 20 years. For each citizen, these devices are cheaper than jails and courts, and are far more effective.

MADD is so far from reality that it's almost pathetic, in fact even their founder (who was forced out by the extremist wing) thinks so.

This has got to be one of the nost moronic ideas ever, I mean what's stopping a drunk driver from getting somebody else to blow in the tube, or using an air pump? And why do these morons want to punish people who don't drive drunk? Although I think they're a bunch of blowhards, I've never driven drunk and I certainly don't want to pay for their stupid "Minority Report" technology to be installed on my next car.

The only reason MADD stays in existence is that it's a gigantic guilt trip (no matter how bad their proposals are, a group called Mothers Against Drunk Driving can always manipulate politicians into doing their bidding, just by the threat of making them look bad) and their board of directors makes an obscene amount of money a year - with their president making $250,000.

I'm glad one of their biggest supporters, Mike DeWine, lost his bid for re-election this year and I hope their other boy in the Senate, Frank Lautenberg loses in 2008.

The statistics are very misleading.

There were 13000 fatalities in alcohol-related fatalities with a BAC of over .08. Which means that at least one driver or nonoccupant had a BAC of over .08

http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/pdf/nrd-30/NCSA/TSF2005/AlcoholTSF05.pdf

Another statistic that reads differently:

http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/pdf/nrd-30/NCSA/TSFAnn/TSF2005EE.pdf

page 100 table 65
Related Factors for Drivers and Motorcycle Operators Involved in Fatal Crashes
Under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication 7441

Quite a difference.

By the way I do not drive, never have had a license and seldom drink

I just don't like it when statistics are falsely represented to people that trust them.

I am indeed a hollow and empty person, but that's besides the point - particularly when coming from someone who's pinkie likes making repeated and random forays over to the Caps Lock button. Yelling LOUDER isn't the best way in getting your point across.

It may be a dumb idea but if it keeps some people from drinking and driving it would be great. Both my older brothers past away this past Halloween when a drunk driver ran a red light and slammed into the side of their car. There's no excuse to drink and drive.

blowing in a tube is a very dumb idea.

what the govt needs to do is insert a chip into all our foreheads that can be scanned by the car to tell if the person is a "good person" or a "bad person".

it's better that we separate our society like this anyway...chip implants can do just that.

of course i get to be "the one" who will program in who all the good and bad people are.

Insert a saftey pin into the correct two wires then turn the key. It will start right up. On Fords its the red wire with the light blue stripe.
