hsmagst:

True, but that assumes that the individual is prepared to believe in a creator, which I am not. I see no evidence supporting a creator. You'll see that essentially I wrote that I personally don't believe Evolution and Creationism can co-exist, some would disagree (like my PhD supervisor, and you :-)

To anomalous4: Why do you assume that Ted is g a y? Maybe he is bi-sexual and really does enjoy sexual relations with his wife? Maybe, just maybe he leans more to heterosexual relations than homosexual relations. Maybe he will actually be happier staying away from relations with men after his recovery program. And while only 50% success seems small, maybe that is all that can be achieved in a short time.....and maybe he will have to fight it each and every day of his life, just as an alcoholic does when he goes on the program.

To Bigdmm: I think you are very wrong when you say "Evolution and Creationism CANNOT co-exist". There is nothing in either that says that a creator could not have created existance and then let things take their course. We see samples of evolution all the time in existing lifeforms due to environmental influences. If you do enough reading you will see the even Darwin alluded to a creator and there are a lot of scientists that believe that the 2 ideas are not incompatable.

FaithCox1, you say "But it seems to me that human teachings have strayed so far from the good in religious texts that the message has been lost."

The problem here is that you make the assumption that Science (which is what I assume you mean by human teachings...if I'm wrong, oops...sorry) is wrong because it doesn't validate or support what the Bible (or other religious texts) are saying.

Some believe that Science and Religion can co-exist, I don't think this is possible as the one is always trying to invalidate the other (perhaps not consciously). Evolution and Creationism CANNOT co-exist, and in MY opinion more evidence points towards Evolution than Creationism.

It is very hard to hear "the message" when you are so busy beating other people on the head with your Bible.

bigdmm-
I was just thinking the same thing. And how on earth can scientists prove that God stopped time? Did they find his datebook? It just doesn't make sense!

If you can believe the Bible because of the little tidbits of facts that appear here and there, why not Greek or Roman mythology? Why not any other religion? All religions have something, no matter how small, to back them up. Why does everyone consider ONLY their religion to be the only real one?

FaithCox1...

....sorry, I just re-read your post and have a question.

If you believe: "Leap year, one day added. Story in the bible says God stopped time in order to allow Joshua to defeat one of his enemies. Scientists proved that this happened and why we have to add a day every four years to our calendar year to make up for the lost day." Why do we need to add one day every four years to make up for ONE lost day? This isn't logical! If we decided to skip December 31st this year, would we fix it by adding a December 32nd once every four years?

All mythologies create stories to try and explain an event that occurs whether it is a tsunami that parts the Red Sea or a volcano eruption that blots out the sun or a meteor impact that stuns the earth or how the earth might have been created.

Every society has their own creation myth.

Mythologies try to make parallels between the heroes/villains of the myth and the people of the times so that they can see the possible outcome of certain actions.

There is much good in the bible just as much good can be found in other religious texts.

But it seems to me that human teachings have strayed so far from the good in religious texts that the message has been lost.

I hear so often now not the good but the message "Shouldn't we hate what God hates?".

Where is the love, the joy the happiness that is supposed to come from worship? So much of it is now, as perhaps it has always been to some extent, hate and fear and destroying other religions.

I prefer the message of love and happiness and safety. Loving our neighbors as ourselves. Serving the sick in body, the sick at heart, the sick in mind, the old, the downtrodden. Coming together for the common good. Loving and respecting the Earth and the creatures of the Earth.

I cannot hate nor judge those who are as the Creator made them.

I'm just an old Pagan Heathen I guess.

Belittling a person for their occupation as a shoe or car salesman is such a nice Christian thing to do. Way to go Mr. London.
