OK WE HAVE A TARGET AND THE TIME IT TAKES TO RUN TO THE SAFE SET UP THR WEAPON LOAD AND AIM AND ESTABLISH A FIRE LINE . THE AIRPLANE IF IT WAS A GLIDER WOULD STILL HAVE PLENTY OF TIME TO HIT TARGET UNLESS THEY CIRCLE A FEW TIMES AND WAIT ON THE LAW TO GET INTO A FIRNG POSITION.aNY ONE WHO HAS EVER FIRED ONE OF THESE WEAPONS KNOWS IT DOESN'T WORK AT THE SNAP OF A FINGER.
New York cops? They can do almost nothing except brutalized their citizens. I saw a video clip at BBC showing NY police brutality towards Occupy Wall Street protesters who were demonstrating but weren't violent. They are protesting the special treatments given wall street by government but we the people get nothing back. It looks like those police were trained in Syria. That police chief must be fired before give him any more weapons.
Why isn't that clip and a dozen other videos of Police Brutality during Occupy Wall St, a lead story on CBS? Who needs a news station that is unwilling to cover meaningful news. This "NYPD can shoot down planes" is meaningless.

Gosh,if you read the article it would appear that the decisions are not made by NYC beat cops, not to disparage those individuals as so many are apt to do. Next time some of you have a serious problem handle it your selves rather than depending on the incompetent LEO's in your area.
Barrett .50 cal is probably a misprint understanding or ignorant of a weapon that shoots down aircraft. In any case I believe the police are out of line carrying such weapons..It's probably the .50 cal Browning they are talking about. Either that or CBS is playing off that simple fact.
I am sure you are right, after doing some homework it appears that the Barrett is a semi auto sniper rifle, while the Browning is a fully auto weapon @ 550+ rounds per minute (almost 10 per second), and would be more than capable of taking out any civilian aircraft.
How does no one notice that a barret .50 caliber rifle is a sniper rifle used in Afganistan, it is useless against aircraft unless you get lucky as hell. A stinger missile would be more realistic, but a barret .50 caliber is useless
It is a good thing that terrorists don't watch "60 Minutes". Otherwise they would know that:
a) You should change your shirt color after you trigger the bomb because they can track you on closed circuit.
b) You should try the "car bomb in Times Square" trick again -- we were lucky it didn't work.
c) We track terrorist acts overseas so do something different here. (And implausibly something bad guys are doing in the Dominican Republic has NYPD suspicious.)
d) We are so paranoid, all the terrorists have to do is convince the NYPD that the plane has been hijacked, fly it over the city and they will take care of shooting it down.
e) We have radiation detectors that react to the same radiation type as a gamma camera -- so shield it better or get it here quickly.
There is some limit to the public's need to know. We lie through our teeth during Presidential Campaigns and everybody grins at it -- how about even a little attempt at not telling the bad guys what we know. What a strange news media we have -- bend the truth about candidates to support their view so citizens will be fooled, but tell those who would kill us in our beds what works and what doesn't.
