I can understand how technology (like video cameras that catch criminals) has helped with arrests and I suppose they could be a deterrant. But that is a pretty sizable decrease, oh I wonder if more CCW (carrying a concealed Weapon) permits are deterring criminals too. Frankly, I'd like to think so because unemployment has just been on the uptick seems like forever and that is usually a contributing factor.

Before the FBI closes its report, I hope they stop by Las Vegas and talk to Metro Police. Nevada and Las Vegas in particular, have the highest rate of murdered women in the USA and they continue to be senselessly murdered, even as we speak. I don't believe that report for one minute.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It seems like a shooting or killing at least every day on average here in Cincinnati, but the article says the study ended in 2010-that could explain quite a bit.

And now I have reason to disbelieve anything the FBI publishes. Obviously the government is cooking the books on just about everything, this story is tripe. Check out just about any place in the greater Atlanta area...yea, violent crime is down, there are plenty of jobs, and the troops in Afghanistan are getting the leadership and support they need... Uncle Sam is doing a great job.

I love the gun comments - two people in my household carry as well. But maybe violent crimes are down because POTUS is paying people to sit on their rears as opposed to having to - dare I say the word - "work" for a living or commit a violent crime.

You can bet that the faultering Brady Campaign, the oddly named Violence Policy Center, and Michael Bloomberg's Mayors Against Illegal Guns are banging their heads on the wall now since crime continues to go down, and as millions of Americans are able to take up the option of concealed weapons, especially in the 41 "shall issue" states where concealed carry is shown to be most successful compared to the unworkable "may issue" states and crime cesspools like Chicago and Washington, DC where useless and dangerous gun control laws still leave law abiding citizens helpless and defenseless from "always armed" thugs.

Spot on! I can't believe the moderators let this post stand. Liberal media types are not likely to make this connection on their own.

There is no correlation whatever between loose/tight gun laws and the violent crime rate. There is a correlation between gun deaths and loose gun laws. As regulation goes down, you're more likely to be killed by a gun.

That's according the FBI Uniform Crime Reports and the CDC.

Dr_Panglos

Please define "loose gun laws" and "regulation".

Are you suggesting that as more individuals become armed citizens there are more killings and crimes?
mark06gt replies:

Dr_Pangloss, it's not that easy. Gun laws are primarily regulated at the state level, but if you look by counties, the story is quite different. For example, according to FBI and PA UCR reports there were 514 firearm homicides in Pennsylvania in 2009. Philadelphia county accounted for 54% of theses homicides. If you include Dauphin (Harrisburg) and Allegheny County (Pittsburg), these 3 counties account for 70% of the firearm homicides in PA in 2009, but only account for 24% of the population. It's not the laws, it's the people.

I don't think they have enough data to make a sound study on the effectiveness of CCW laws at stopping crime. But personally I have stopped 4 since I got my permit. Fortunately I don't feel any need to shoot at a running target.
