gjc - Country of Origin Labeling is required by the FDA for all fish. it is packaging law that both the country of origin and if it is wild or farm raised is required.

As for the rest of this "reporting" (and I use this term loosely):

This piece of reporting is nothing more than a propaganda mouth piece for a US Trade group that has no other agenda then to ban all global imports of catfish products. SHAME on CBS for being their mouth piece without an ounce of investigative reporting. all your journalists should have their degrees in journalism revoked.

FALSE REPORTING #1: Antibiotics are not used in overseas farming. yes this was the case in the beginning of globalized aquaculture, but that practice was stopped years ago. The FDA inspects for antibiotics and rejects any products to be found with antibiotics. almost all US firms require 3rd party laboratory reports proving imported product is antibiotic free before they will accept delivery of products.

FALSE REPORTING #2: That overseas products are not quality control inspected. On the contrary, overseas products and practices are highly inspected and scrutinized. Many global sustainable practices organizations provide oversight to farmed fish overseas: Marine Stewardship Council, World Wildlife Fund, Sustainable Fishery Partnership, Aquaculture Certification Council, Environmental Defense Fund, GlobalGap and British Retail Consortium are to name just a few. there are hundreds of them, all focused on making the global food supply chain as safe and sustainable as it can be. Not just for US consumers, but for global consumers.

This is just the tired drum beat of a US protectionist organization trying to distract the conversation from the simple fact that domestic farming is inefficient and doesn't make sense economically.

We no longer make TV's in the US because we weren't globally competitive. We no longer make clothes in the US because we weren't globally competitive. Brazil is now the bread basket of the world due to simple economics. nothing more nothing less.

in the early 1900's the US used to be the most competitive place in the world to produce and manufacture products, this is no longer the case and not because other countries, companies or workers overseas are evil.

it's simple economics.

I would like to see a sign on all fish sold in the USA that list two things: the country of origin and if the fish was wild caught or farm raised. I feel that I have right to know what I am consuming.
