This story is bunk. CBS should be ashamed of itself, participating in muddying the waters around this. High Fructose corn syrup causes a massive blood sugar spike which has many negative consequences.

The chemists and the company who manufactures this junk ought to be held responsible. To them it is just profit. They are causing ill health in many people, and should be brought to trial. Just like in China, where adulterated foods killed people.

Just as you would with drugs.....JUST SAY NO!!!!!!!! I am a huge Jillian Michaels fan and have read book "Master Your Metabolism" cover-to-cover twice. In this book she describes HFC as a cheap and even refined grain. HFC is not like sugar, as many want to claim. HFC is metabolized by the liver (sugar is metabolized by the pancreas). If your food is being metabolized by the liver, the proper "STOP EATING and START DIGESTING" hormones are not secreated. So you keep eating. This effect of HFC is lasting....as much as 24 hours after you eat it. It tricks your body into believing that you really aren't eating and are not full.
JUST SAY NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you have the oppurtunity to cross exam the ingredients in the food that is fed to the military and what is on the store shelf for civilian consumers? Take a wild guess which one in volume will containless HFCS.I am not saying the choices aree different im saying the food in a military mess hall from thier dietician menu for mass feeding contains less HFCS and is designed and deatiled that way on purpose.

HELP! HFCS made my teeth turn green and my hair fall out!

Fructose, galactose, glucose, lactose, sucrose...if it ends in OSE, it's sugar. And wherever you get it from, too much of it is bad for you. Limit your sugar intake from any source and you'll be fine.

I swear, if people didn't have something to ***** about they'd go nuts...HFCS, vaccines, baby slings...

The link between childhood obesity and HFCS has been documented. The catabolic pathway for glucose is substantially different that the fructose catabolic pathway. NO biochemists dispute this. The continued over-consumption of fructose results in liver toxicity. More troubling, a diet high in HFCS results in disruption of the brain's ability to regulate satiety. The writer of this article has barely done more research than an average high school student. Corn syrup, sugar, and also pure fruit juice are all processed by the liver and cells as toxins when taken in excess and without fiber (unlike what happens when you eat sugar-containing fibrous fruits and vegetables).

The issue I have with HFCS is simply this ... its so hard to get away from, it seems like its in everything, even things you wouldn't expect it to be in.

This is an unbelievably dumb article. Anyone who cooks (beyond grilling a steak or heating a pizza in the microwave) knows that HFCS and sugar are quite different in the kitchen. This is why you don't use HFCS when your canning jam at home, and it's why store-bought jam does not have that "fresh from the field" taste that home-canned jam does.

Beet sugar also tastes different than cane sugar, that's another thing that the article missed.

If beet and cane and hfcs were the same thing then they would taste the same. But they do NOT taste the same. Beet sugar should never be used in recipies that have very light tastes in them, such as white cakes, or strawberry jams. Beet sugar is fine in cookies and chocolate cakes and strong jams like marmarlade, blackberry jam and applesauce. hfcs, unlike cane and beet sugar, is absolutely worthless in the home kitchen because the corn taste overpowers any other flavors. When manufacturers use hfcs in foods they also have to add countering flavors (artificial vanilla and such) to distract from the corn flavor.

These 3 sugars may end up doing the same thing in the body but before they get into the body they have to pass the taste buds - and that's why soda pop you buy today doesen't taste as good as it did when you were a kid - because it's not the same thing you were drinking when you were a kid.

The anti-HFCS crowd also is very aware of the farm subsidy to corn farmers and that is another reason they oppose HFCS because of the fairness issue.

Also the claim that it goes to the liver and produces fat is bunk. HFCS and cane and beet suger are all converted into carbohydrates, and it is only EXTRA carbs that are converted to fat. As long as you are properly counting calories, it makes absolutely no difference in the fat balance whether the calories come from hfcs, or cane or beet sugar - as long as your caloric expenditure is balanced with your caloric intake, your fine - assuming your getting your vitamins and minerals (which you won't be if your diet is sugar pop and doughnuts, even if your caloric intake is lower than your caloric expenditure)
