- Maybe the jails wouldn't be this full if we didn't put criminals in jails for the small stuff. Jail sentences should be given for real crimes. Fine the small stuff instead.

- The sheriff will run out of room fast...Chicago is known both in the past and present for many a firearm incident...

- Yesterday's meteorite that fell and exploded over the Ural region of Russia should have fallen and exploded over the west side of Chicago, right around W. Division Street and N. Auistin Avenue, that would have solved about 50% of Chicago's murder problem. NASA and NORAD should then deviate any incoming extraterrestial objects to the south side of Chicago, somewhere around State and 90TH streets to solve the other remaining 50%.

- It's pretty simple, and Chicago (and Cook County) are already on the way to solving Sheriff Dart's problem. Minor marijuana possession complaints will be handled with citations and fines (except for repeat offenders and dealers); that will clear several thousand people out of County Jail...making room for those charged with (and ultimately convicted of) gun crimes. Problem solved!

- Paradox - Too many Criminals go free yet we already have the biggest inmate population in the world. I will refrain from further comment but what does everybody think of this?

- They have squandered their public resources on perks and benefits for government employee unions. Now there are no prison cells available and there is no money to hire more police to arrest the gun violators to put in those cells. Chicago is the city that has infused it governing philosophy into Barack Obama.

- The utter absurdity of the headline above illustrates that politicians are only interested in placating the common people rather than actually passing laws that will prove effective. There are two possible alternative solutions as I see it after decades as a crime and courts journalist. 1. Either stop passing laws that have no teeth just to placate the public, or 2. Build more prisons. To follow any other course is to verify once and for all to the public that bureaucrats and politicians from the local level to Congress care less about upholding the law and protecting Americans than keeping their jobs and power.
Chicago officials are calling for minimum sentences for gun law violations. They obviously feel incarceration will resolve a significant part of the problem. That being the case then, logically, mandatory minimum sentences for all felonies and perhaps even some misdemeanors would substantially reduce all categories of crime. Rather than complaining that he has no room, the Sheriff and the State Prison system should be calling for massive expansion of confinement facilities. Build enough cells to hold all repeat offenders, remove the recreational programs, weight-building equipment and other luxuries (Most homes of honest people don't have weight rooms) then watch crime rates drop. Not only that, if each U.S. county, all 2,992 each adds a new jail large enough to treble the number of inmates, and each state builds three new state prisons with similar goals, the economy will skyrocket, property and gang crimes will plummet and honest children will live to reach legal maturity. In addition, the monies lost to criminals and costs incurred for medical treatment will plunge. It's a win-win situation for everyone. Police will receive the message that their service is valued, that they're not just part of a perennial criminal recycling program and honest citizens in many communities may finally feel safe in their homes and on the public streets. For any president, that would be a legacy or which to truly be proud. - Reply to this comment
- The state of Illinois has plenty of room for more prisoners. There's a state-of-the-art brand spanking new prison sitting on the west side of the state that HAS NEVER BEEN USED. If state criminals weren't given 1 for 1 time off for good behavior by the time some of these fools serve their time & are released the arthritis would have set in to the point they couldn't pull a trigger anymore. This has not nearly as much to do with President Obama as it does with parents raising straight up thugs and the legal system sentencing them to 20 years or whatever and they only serve half their time if they are good while incarcerated. What an oxymoron that is...

- As the U.S. increasingly becomes a third world country, even less of the needed and expensive prison space will be available. Just take a look at California. It is a tale told of you.

- It's absolutely mind boggling That a 55 year old female college research worker was arrested in Chicago, for having an unloaded gun in a case that she legally owned and took with her because she didn't want to leave it home because of her house was being remodeled, there were no bullets in the gun or inside the case she was finally freed after posting a $25.000 bond...This is the mentality of the liberal Chicago..they will harass legal gun owners at every opportunity, but Chicago seems reluctant to seriously crack down on the thugs with the "stop and search" tactics and a hard crack down on the straw gun buyers that sell those guns to thugs and to prosecute these thugs to the max.The so called "assault rifle" ban proposals that would have not prevented any of the mass shooting is particularly irrelevant in the Chicago gun violence...because by far the most shooting that are done there and nation wide is done by criminals shooting other criminals with illegal handguns...And it is also a FBI fact that more people are killed in a year by hammers and blunt objects then with rifles,...any kind of rifles..If Chicago wants to get serious they should use the stop and search methods and anyone caught with an illegal gun should be busted hard...and stiff sentences be given to the straw gun buyers and leave the law abiding citizens alone, and give these citizens the legal means to protect themselves against an army of criminal thugs.
