Whatever happened to the Texas concealed weapons law in which all citizens are allowed to carry a concealed weapon? This law was enacted as a consequence of an event where a whacko opened fire on people in a restaurant, killing some number of its customers. A woman, whose husband was one of the victims, was the law's prime advocate. So, is the law still in tact and, if so, has anyone done a study on its effect?

This does not appear to be a well thought out approach to the problem. I suggest you consult with professionals before you implement any such program.

This article is boloney. The Texas school districts already have the ability to raise taxes annually up to 7.99 percent without threat of a rollback election. That means they can double their taxes every 9 years on every property owner in their district.

I have always advocated the use of airport style security screening at schools. If you make every one pass through it, then it is safe to say the safe zone is secure.

It will also stop bully fears who purport to possess weapons. Students in the safe zone can ignore bully threats or feel confident that an even playing field exists to handle threats more effective.

Arming an army of guards won't make any school secure. It will only entice passive aggressive escalation by displaying force and wielding weapons.

solarays been in the sun too long or just plain ignorant. Military bases have the most stringent gun control policies and practices compared to any civilian city. Compaing what happened at Ft hood to the Sandy school no contest. Only military police are allowed to carry loaded weapons on base. All other weapons unless you are at the range are unloaded and locked up so educate your self before you make yourself look stupid. OH sorry too late. For those whining about more gun control laws as a solution to the tragic shooting last week please answer this question. What possible gun law would have prevented this disturbed being from killing his mother, stealing her guns, breaking into a school and shooting these defenseless children?
Then answer this question. What stopped the disturbed being from his killing spree?
The only answer to the first question is, Nothing short of a total weapons ban, including Knives (see China event on same date). This will never happen.
The answer to the second question is. The killer knew trained men with guns were seconds away from killing him so he killed himself.
This would cause me to speculate that had a well-trained and armed security person been present and killer knew this he would not have attacked the school in the first place.
Which is more plausible and most likely palatable, politically? Total weapons ban? OR Armed security for schools?
Legislating against evil: Impossible
Preparing for and practicing to prevent harm from evil intent: Actionable

Tip of the hat to Texas for taking the higher road.

Texas is such a bonehead place. Texas has the most relaxed laws on the books. Cowboy Rick Perry wants everyone to be able to carry your gun 'anywhere you want' without benefit of a concealed permit. They love to shoot down there. And I mean anything goes. Even retired zoo animals get sent to Texas so the good old boys can slaughter them for fun and profit. Yup. Quite a place. To avoid.

VIOLENCE ON THE RISE?

It doesn't help-
when we invade before exhausting diplomatic options, fostering violence
and undermining trust and respect for America at home and abroad.

It doesn't help-
when we depend on barbaric cultures for vital resources, thereby
infecting our culture with their extremism and violent behavior.

It doesn't help-
when a major political party embraces bigotry, radicalism and religious
and economic exploitation of the masses, promoting fear and distrust.

It doesn't help-
when a toxic Darwinian ideology glorifying narcissism is adopted into the
mainstream of that party and used as an excuse for undermining essential
government controls that protect capitalism from its inherent self-
destructive tendencies.

It also doesn't help-
when free speech protections like the Fairness Doctrine are removed
so that moneyed interests can flood the airwaves with ideological dogma
and brainwash the masses with beliefs that undermine democracy and are
contrary to their own self-interest.

Nor does it help-
when the Supreme Court of the United States furthers the domination of
government by those same moneyed interests by granting corporations
unlimited economic influence over elections.

It's so pathetic that many Americans, not all, are still stuck in the 18 century and yet they criticize the Moslems as being in the Dark Ages. Are these Americans any better??? Most great civilizations fell for two main reasons. The first factor was economic collapse and the second, moral collapse. The USA is sitting on the brink. Americans have a big decision to makeand presently the odds are quickly growing on the failure side.

Those of you who DON'T own a gun: Would you ever put a big sign up in your yard that said, "There are no guns in this house!" No, you wouldn't. And why? Because if a person of criminal intent drives down the street, he will know with certainty that yours is a soft target. He might get shot going into MY house, (He WILL get shot going into my house, who are we kidding?) but he WON'T get shot going into yours, so he will intentionally target your house, rather than mine. Before the sign, the odds of you or me being a victim are 50/50. After the sign: 100/0.

The establishment of so-called "gun-free" zones in schools and campuses and malls...well, we might as well put up a sign that says, "All potential victims on these premises are defenseless." If you wouldn't post that sign in front of your kid's school, you should end the fallacious notion of "gun-free zones" and let teachers and administrators arm themselves.

Please note where mass shootings have NEVER occurred:

* NRA annual convention; guns everywhere

* Fraternal Order of Police convention; guns everywhere

* Gun shows; guns everywhere
