- I have seen African tribal warfare first hand in Somalia, Angola, Ethiopia and the Sudan. If what is occurring in Chicago is anything else but, you could fool me. It is invariably true that the areas with the strictest "gun control" laws also boast the highest crime rates. In Florida, when we passed the concealed weapons law years ago, violent crime declined in several categories as much as 23%, almost overnight. The Illinois liberals have brought this disaster down upon their own heads and have learned absolutely nothing from their failures. The colloquial definition of insanity is repeating the same behavior over and over again and expecting a different result. Chicago is the manifestation of this madness, and, until they re-conceptualize their approach, the situation will only worsen. They have only themselves to blame.

Yes, our failed drug war is a major contributor to this violence, and we certainly need to replace drug prohibition with harm mitigation, but I'm not holding my breath to see that happen any time soon.
No, Chicago's NOT a war zone; three or four of our 25 police districts are war zones. Those areas WERE the turf of five or six large gangs; those gangs have broken up into smaller offshoots, with an exponential increase in the number of places where turf wars break out. And because the new, smaller gangs don't have an established hierarchy, there's no one who can enforce discipline within them, as in the past.
No, concealed-carry is NOT a panacea. As the police officer in the story observes, one of the problems with our current generation of gangbangers is that they have such poor aim; adding "good guys" who also don't know how to hit their targets is hardly a solution.
Yes, a significant part of the problem is that our economy doesn't offer a kid who's considering joining a gang a lot of alternatives. That was true before the recession and is even more true today.
I hold no brief for either Mayor Emanuel (voted against him) or Police Comr. McCarthy, but what's going on has little to do with who's in charge of either the city or the police department. A teenager with a gun isn't playing politics; he thinks he's been dissed and he's out to get revenge. In fact, I give Emanuel and McCarthy credit for bringing CeaseFire into the picture; they should be able to help.
Finally, Barack Obama never held any elected or appointed position in the government of the City of Chicago. He represented the Kenwood-Hyde Park area on the South Side of Chicago (NOT one of the areas now beset by gang violence) in the Illinois Senate. He DID some community organizing in at least one of the areas having problems now, but that was 25 years ago! Pretty hard to blame HIM for what's happening! - Reply to this comment

- I fully agree that the only way to end this disaster is to do what was done to end the disaster of Capone v. O'Banion v. Torrio (et al) of 80+ years ago - end the Drug War™. Period. Unlike a prior poster, though, I'm still wondering when we'll be seeing our modern-day version of the St. Valentine's Day Massacre.
Sigh...
Also, it is way past time for Illinois to get with the program and follow Wisconsin in allowing concealed-carry (with permit) - plus a 'castle doctrine' - and allow its law-abiding citizens a fighting chance to fight back. Illinois is the only USA state left without such liberty.

- Well let's see the common thread:
1. A city that still keeps their law abiding citizens disarmed.
2. Rampant inter-generational enslavement to government entitlements.
3. The destruction of the nuclear family through entitlements in which the male has been demasculated and is nothing more than a sperm donor.
4. Rewarding single moms who have more children with more entitlements.
5. The lack of men leading the nuclear family or even being home, so that young black boys do not have positive role models of manhood.
6. A Democratic party controlled city who embraces all of the above.

- It's not the gangs or flashmobs. They come and go. It is global warming. Warm winter, mild spring. Hot summer. With cappings being the traditional ways to cool down from this or that petty offense without the intermediation and soothing guidance of elder gang leaders. And community organizers and spokesfolks.
