If you haven't seen Borgnine in Bad Day at Black Rock, now's the time to catch that great if somewhat forgotten gem from the mid-1950's, featuring the likes of Spencer Tracy, Robert Ryan, Lee Marvin, Dean Jagger, Walter Brennan, Anne Francis and of course Ernest Borgnine.
Great drama with an all-star cast.

It's always sad to lose one of the greats. When I was growing up in the 70s, the B.B.C. or I.T.V. would show a western, war or adventure film, that the family would watch together - it was something nearly every family did in those days. We were treated to the likes of Wayne, Mitchum, Widmark, Fonda, Stewart, amongst others - and invaribly Ernest Borgnine. I think he was in Bad Day At Black Rock with Spencer Tracy, but I thought his best role was in Ice Station Zebra playing Vaslov, the Soviet double-agent. I saw him interviewed a couple of times too - he was a good-natured chap, always had an anecdote or two to tell, and was damned funny with it. He's given us a lot down the years, and like all those other greats will be sadly missed. Thankfully through their films they're still very much with us though. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

As the Boomers cross into memory, I realize how our world has changed because of the legacy people like Mr Borgnine leave behind as we travel through time.

I remember watching McHale's Navy in black and white when there were only 3 tv stations to choose from.
Marty I saw the first time at the theaters when they had reruns. It cost me $1 to get in.
This was a fun time for kids, with real toys, milk delivery, drive in theaters and waitresses on skates.
Heck today the world has shrunk...
I can watch Mr. Borgnine online on a connection we share around the world.
I can say it has been a privilege to live in our modern world even with all it's problems.

He played the really evil Sarge in Hear to Eternity. Great and versatile actor. Seemed like a really nice guy, and we have too few of them. Sorry to see him go.He'll be missed.
