NCI-designated cancer centers are very large businesses which act as a base of power for academic clinical oncologists who have made a mess of clinical cancer research, since the time when Nixon first declared war on cancer. The disparity between what we are learning in research labs, and the time it actually takes to trickle down to oncology as it is practiced in the clinic, is disheartening to say the least.
