Comments on: Car Dealers Reeling From Forced Closures
Many To-Be-Shuttered Chrysler Dealers Offering Deep Discounts To Avoid Bankruptcy
- If a dealer owns his premises, it is overstating the case to say that Chrysler or GM is forcing them to close.
The most they can do is drop the francise to sell new Chrysler or GM cars as a licensed new car dealer. They also might not reimburse for warranty service work.
Those in our area of Wisconsin who were notified about being dropped are continuing to stay open. They will sell used cars, do non-warranty service and body shop work, and sell off their new inventory in other ways. That is where they always made most of their money anyway. Several who sold only Dodge or only Chrysler or only Jeep are merging to offer the full Chrysler line and meet the new criteria for retaining a new car franchise.
I do not think that Chrysler, and probably GM, have treated these dealers very well, but they are in dire straits themselves. Whoever is blaming Obama or Pelosi for this mess has been wearing their tin hats too long and receiving too many messages from alien star systems. - Reply to this comment

- According to Edmunds.com, a Dodge Grand Caravan's sticker price (MSRP) ranges from $23K to $29K. So the typical selling price should be $20K to $26K. Yet he is going to lose $7K if he sells it for $25K? Yeah right. Does it have 24-karat gold wheels or something? I have some sympathy for him, but I think he will do just fine as a used car dealer.

Really? You can read his mind? What does he feel like eating for dinner tonight? - Reply to this comment
- This guy is admitting he paid 32K for a crappy Dodge Minivan from a company that he should have known was going to go belly-up.

- Signore said he wouldn't have this many cars if he hadn't given in to Chrysler's pleas to buy more cars than usual as it struggled to save itself.

"This is my retirement ripped right out of my hands," Signore said.

If she had let the car makers go bankrupt sooner, fewer dealers would be stuck with inventory they can't sell.
Now the car makers are going bankrupt anyway, after they pocketed the billions of Pelosi's bailout.
The natural market forces would have left everyone better off in the long run after all. - Reply to this comment
