Miracles don't have to have a religious root. They are occurances that defy rational explanation. If medical care and hard work were all there is to the equation, there would be many more stories of people recovering. I've worked in a hospital and seen plenty of people whose families and doctors worked tirelessly for their recoveries without success. And then there are the stories like this...miracles. There are people that see religious significance in them, but they happen to unbelievers as well as devout religious practioners. No matter whether the event is the intervention of the deity or chance, it still inspires hope and is worth celebrating. Your need to deny or to diminish Lt. Brennan's story suggests envy. You should take a look at some of the things you take for granted and appreciate them for the gifts they are. You appear to be a relatively intelligent and articulate human being. Acknowledge it. Celebrate it.

- I might have entertained a "miracle" if the kid hadn't been injured.
But you have to wonder what "mysterious ways" god had in mind when he "miraculously" saved the life of a man who will now have to suffer for every god-blessed moment of the rest of his natural life . . . to god's glory.
