- has there been any investigation of the cost to hospital Emergency Rooms for the behavior health patient in need of a psychiatric evaluation? My professional experience has shown that patients need to be "medically cleared" before they can be psychiatrically evaluated. I have heard of situations when patients have spent entire weekends in an ER bed waiting for the psychiatrist to return to the hospital Monday morning. This must be a huge expense to the hospital, not to mention the unfortunate and unnecessary ordeal for the patient and their family. Has this ever been examined? signed, blevin@cfgpc.com

- Federal law requires hospitals to treat patients no matter their ability to pay........my hospital wrote off over 35 million dollars in unpaid bills last year......in our ER we see the same GOMER's over and over........some get discharged and go out in the parking lot and call 911 to return........yes we see many who do have serious chronic illness and they use the ER because it is an easy avenue for their healthcare even though they can go downtown to a clinic.......i'm in favor of socialized healthcare and hope Obama makes it happen.........everyone in America already has healthcare.....it's called the local Emergency Room

- Omnibus,
I think you have missed my point which is that of the overstated hard costs reported by this particular hospital. The hospital is reporting its unpayed cost for these visits as $1153 per visit. What I, a paying customer, would have to pay for service is obviously not going to be the same as the hospital's costs because they have to make a profit. - Reply to this comment
- There is a long list of things wrong with our health care system. My Mom has worked in the field for over 35yrs. The stories I hear are beyond crazy. The amount of illegal people using our system is through the roof no doubt. But she had a lady, who worked, but her insurance hadnt kicked in yet. She had a stomach pain, so they want to check to make sure her apenix was not infected. A simple blood test would check her white cell, a sure sign if it is, cost 25 dollars. No the doctor made her have a Xray cost $2000. Come on now.

It is obvious that you haven't been to an emergency room lately. The reason the hospital charges you $150.00 for an aspirin is because of the thousands of uninsured, a large percentage illegals, who don't pay anything.
Universal health coverage for American CITIZENS coupled with purging the illegals who are costing this country billions in social services would go a long way towards fixing the problem. - Reply to this comment
- Our family has dual medical insurance coverage. Our son sliced his hand on a Friday night. Had to go to the ER. Exam, numbing shot, 3 stitches. Total time with a healthcare provider (a PA, not an MD) was less than 20 minutes. The bill? 1648.00. That must be to make up for the millions of illegal immigrants who use the ER and never pay the bill...

I'm 60 y/o you obviously overweight, sedentary lardazz. Gerontology makes the distinction between aging and the diseases associated with aging. Poor early lifestyle choices are the major factors associated with increased morbidity in the elderly. Suggest you do a little more reading than old news articles about your glory days. - Reply to this comment
- My first reaction to this was homeless people, probably w/ some form of mental health problem ie. paranoia or schizophrenia making unecessary visits to ER, costly no doubt as these folks are unable to pay and the hospital has to write each and every associated cost right off the bottom line. But now stop to think of the numbers being reported: 2600 ER visits totaling a reported $3 million dollars! That is $1153 per visit. How in heavens name am I supposed to believe that? Yes there may be mandatory blood tests, MRI's, x-rays, etc. for visits having to do with chest pain for example. Not to mention having to stick those little wooden sticks in people's mouth when they say ahh and having to pay the receptionist, nurse and doctor salary. But this hospital is going to sit there and say the cost on all of this is $1153 per. If that is the case my first suggestion to the hospital: Fire your business manager! If that is not the case, in other words if the cost is more like $350 per and you are embellishing the numbers to try and advance some agenda I say to the hospital shame on you for not helping us get anywhere in the health care debate. Until we can have honest discussion we will stay stuck.

- One person asked what it would cost in another country for an emergency visit.
Well I know. I was in Italy and had chest pains in 05. I have had 6 heart attacks and survived them. I had 4 doctors treating me there.
I thought "Oh God" how will I pay for this? in a foreign country. After staying in the hospital for 4 hours, they released me. I asked where to see about the bill and they gave me paper work and said to pay at an automatic machine.
It cost me $35 US !!!!!!!! - Reply to this comment
