CBS Evening News: Survey Shows 1 In 3 Americans Had Trouble Paying Medical Bills In Past Year
- Every single one of our politicians have complete medical coverage for themselves and their families, for the rest of their lives. Isn''t it wonderful that WE have supplied them with this? Something is terribly wrong with this picture..............

- "Is Ailing Economy Harmful To Your Health?"
Besides unpaid health/doctor bills that nearly 8 in 10 Americans now have, there is just the challange of buying enough food to feed your family. Food producers have jacked prices well beyond what the wage earner can afford... unless you are talking boxed macaroni and chese.
And what about not freezing to death in the winter or dying of heat stroke in the summer? The energy barons are disconnecting folks right and left who can''t afford the cost of electricity and gas/heating oil.
If you can''t afford to pay your doctor, or the pharmacy for your meds, or put food on the table, or have running water and electricity... yeah. This economy could, literally, kill you. - Reply to this comment
- That''s one reason we need to look carefully at the health care plans of the two presidential candidates. As I see it, McCain''s health care plan is a donut hole health care plan. Remember the donut hole drug plan? Government payments go to drug companies without requiring drug companies to compete or have limitations on their ability to raise prices. As a result, after the donut hole was passed, drug prices skyrocketed, the government paid money directly to the drug companies, and we still paid the higher prices. They called it a donut hole. So it is with McCain''s health care plan. It does away with employer-matched health care, taxes premiums, pays benefits directly to insurance companies while still allowing them to raise premiums, raise deductibles, deny coverage for so-called existing conditions and cherry pick only healthy people to insure. In other words, premiums will go up and more people will lose coverage while the health insurers get more both from us and from the government. I see Obama''s plan as more fair and inclusive.

- I''m almost 56, uninsured, uninsurABLE and was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, finally discovered after 6 hospitalizations in 2 years for pancreatitis.
It''s Breast Cancer Awareness month. I haven''t had a mammogram since 2001, and although I could probably find either a cheap or free program for a mammogram, but what''s the point? If they find something, there is no way on earth I can afford treatment. I already have an incurable disease that I can''t really afford. Each time I have an appointment with the Cystic Fibrosis Center, I have to rent a car which requires a $250 cash deposit, which I just don''t have. I''ve seen them twice: when I received my income tax refund and when I received the first stimulus check. If we receive a second stimulus check, I will be able to see them again. Thankfully, I was accepted into a drug assistance program that pays for the Fentanyl pain patches that I must wear 24/7, and I signed up on line for the free "PS Card," which saves quite a bit on my other prescriptions.
I earn too much for Medicaid and not enough to afford private insurance (although I was told I would be denied access to private insurance, regardless). Healthcare in America is deplorable. - Reply to this comment

- I spent ten years as a nurse and EMT. I enjoyed helping to stitch up big cuts and set broken bones, but that''s only a tiny fraction of the medical field.
The vast majority of people who visit a doctor leave with a prescription for a magic pill that will cure their illness. Many of those patients are poor people on state medical plans. I couldn''t do it any more.
Bacterial and viral infections go away on their own in most cases. We have what''s called an immune system. The immune system allows us to get sick enough we can''t work, so we go to a doctor. The drugs we''re given do nothing if the infection is viral. If the infection is bacterial, it may be cured a little faster with antibiotics.
High blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, ulcers, heartburn, and a host of other maladies that send us to see a doctor, can be cured by adjusting diet, exercising, and watching our weight.
Medicine, for the most part, is an unnecessary expense we can live without. - Reply to this comment
