Many of us were beaten and abused (physically and emotionally) while growing up. Most of us are law-abiding citizens - doctors, lawyers, business leaders, truck drivers and carpenters (to name a few). The fact that anyone breaking the law on any level can pull the "I was abused as a child" wildcard is why it gets lots of press coverage.
These children shouldn''t be paddled. They should just be sent to Juvenile Detention (age appropriate) for 24 hours. Give them a taste of where they are headed. - Reply to this comment

200,000 children out of the millions who attend school on a daily basis are not being parented at home. The disgrace here isn''t that the school is disciplining the children. The disgrace here is that disciplining these children is being delegated to the school system. If you are going to have children, then raise them to be good law-abiding citizens who know how to behave in public. Teach them to respect authority figures and senior citizens. Most of all, teach them to respect themselves. - Reply to this comment
- The less we punish, the further down our country spirals out of control.
It is VERY important that a child learn there are consequences for his/her actions. Spare the rod, spoil the child. Bruises heal and egos get over it.

Very well said. I was in a school that used a paddle with holes drilled in it to get the full effect. Once, during morning announcements over the PA system, someone was getting the paddle...the rest of the school was really good for at least 2 weeks. - Reply to this comment
- If parents would discipline their children at home, there would not be behavior issues at schools. Again I say parents today leave the school systems and the government to raise their children. It is time for parents to step up and take charge of their children. They have chosen to bring children into the world so they need to raise them and hope to act when they are in public. The school system should call the children''s parent to come and pickup their children when they are disruptive. Parents will get tired of coming to the school to pick up their children the issues/behavior will stop. Everyone today thinks that an education is mandated / guaranteed for everyone. But, it is NOT. If you disrupt the learning environment, then you have to change and correct your behavior or you have to go. So I say take the corporal punishment away from the schools and make the parents responsible. If your child does not behave they are not welcome here.

- One of the major problems in this country is prison over crowding, this problem is rearing its ugly head in preschool and elementary systems in this country. These children not being punished will end up dead or worth less than a quadraplegic on snow skis.

- So the official line is that physical punishment never works, when applied by people or schools, but always works when applied by the rich and the wealthy through their ultra-violent police force.
Or to summarize, we will beat you worthless powerless freaks, but you won''t beat anyone. Beatings and violemce belongs to the rich only.
Next they will come out with a fake news story about how s$x with beatiful girls is evil, except when rich old men do it. - Reply to this comment
- "Heather Porter couldn''t believe it when her son Cameron, who was three at the time, told her he''d been spanked with a paddle at his pre-school outside Houston.
"I just felt like I couldn''t protect him," Porter said.
"I don''t, I don''t even spank him at home."

That%u2019s probably why the teacher felt the need to employ discipline at school. - Reply to this comment
- Of the nearly quarter-million kids physically disciplined across the country: African-American girls were hit more than twice as often as white girls.
...and this is just by Jesse Jackson. Oops...sorry...that''s hit ON. - Reply to this comment
- Liberals,.....always blame the paddle like they do guns for committing the crimes. Those guys **** me out.

- Don''t lay a finger on the angelic, innocent child.
Don''t even raise your voice, teach. That could cause lasting trauma. Instead, call the parents EVERY time something happens & make them take time off from work & come down to the school to talk to the principal about little Damian Omen 5''s behavior. - Reply to this comment

Not nearly enough. We''re already seeing the fruitlessness of alternative methods. - Reply to this comment
- They give us a job and then take away the tools we need to get it done. I wish the kids had something to be afraid of!
How many teachers suffer because they are not allowed to use any discipline? I had a kid stand in the corner once and the administration of the school said it might cause a trauma and we would be sued by the parents. We can''t even give detentions any more. We are told to give demerits, but not tell the students when we give them, but send the info to the office and let them deal with it. The end result of this is: the teacher is stuck in a room with kids all day that have no fear of punishment, but this same teacher is responsible for their conduct.
Being entertaining for 5 classes a day is exhausting and doesn''t work on every kid in every class. We teachers need some tools to deal with these kids! At least let us put them in the corner or make them clap erasers outside (also forbidden, as it is child labor!). - Reply to this comment
- For all you whiney parents stating things like %u2018you lay a hand on my kid and you%u2019ll deal with me%u2019 get a grip. If your kids are as wonderful as you say, you shouldn%u2019t worry about the school having to discipline them. Whether you want to admit it or not, there are some kids that need discipline because they%u2019re not getting any at home. This raises the question as to why are the schools raising your kids anyway; however that%u2019s another story.
Nancy Naove %u2013 I`d worry about the sexual perversions of those doing the spanking...

- I think most parents would be shocked at the things their precious little monsters are capable of. Children can now openly defy their teachers with few consequences. Without the paddle as an option, maybe they should just kick the kids out of school and let the parents deal with them. I do not advocate spanking 3 year olds but children who are old enough to understand right from wrong should be corrected. Time out does not work but I guess it does teach patience.

- I used to get yard sticks broke on my back, paddled all the time and even slapped once in awhile. But I had it coming.

- Go back and check these children''s ENVIRONMENT. Lack of education at home WILL reflect behavior at school and everyone knows that modeling is the strongest form of education there is. Family is and always will be considered the Primary source. Lack of discipline is a choice, inherent to social disorders such as narcissism, obsessive/compulsive disorders, socio/psychopathic behaviors (see bush administration for example), borderline personality disorders. Children learn today mostly by materialism, commercials demeaning adults as "not with it" (see cell phone commercials) our society encourages children to believe they are smarter than adults without the benefit of experience of consequences. Democracy at home translates into Anarchy in the streets later on.

- There''s another possible issue here that is never mentioned: Whenever I see news stories like this, I always wonder what percentage of the punishers may be getting an inappropriate thrill out of beating the children. I''ve participated in consenting adult S&M activities in the past, and I can easily see this as a possible dark side to any punishment scenario. They finally ended corporal punishment in British prisons in the late-1940s when the guards were surveyed, and some admitted it was fun to beat the submissive prisoners. What percentage of school punishment instances may possibly involve this inappropriate component? Bet it''s significantly larger than zero, and that''s not good. Just imagine some rural Texas "tough" teacher somewhere harboring his little secret. Ugh!
