Proponents Of Solar Power Say The Technology Is Getting Cheaper, May One Day Compete With Fossil Fuels

What part of God''s plan included massacring the Native Americans and enslaving Africans? Or were they not "good enough" for God? - Reply to this comment
- Fossil Fuels are a limited and precious resource. We will pay more and more for access to them. Wake up and invest in clean energy. The govenments must do their part, but as individuals we must act. even if it is using a solar panel to recharge your ipod. every watt matters. if you can afford a hybrid car, buy one. if you can afford solar panels, mount them. If your state offers "clean energy" on your power bill, buy some. and if you don''t want to participate, be thankful that some do, for they will extend the life of our limited supply of coal, oil and gas.

- These forums sadly enough are being overrun by the dittoheads republicans who could not do science in grade school and therefore have turned away from it in their lives.
Having to defend the most basic of concepts is just wrong. We have a school system in this country so that we can carry on discourse at at least an intermediate level. But since Rush, Hannity, et. al., say it is BS, then that''s what they believe. We are cooking this planet. - Reply to this comment

The problem with your arguments are in your first line. Solar wont compare with fossil fuels? What are you, an energy engineer? Germany is going mostly solar. But, maybe they don''''t know technology over there like you do.

WHOH! HOLD ON THERE SPORT!! Are you SAying that AMERICANS cant FIGURE THIS PROBLEM OUT!???!?!
The SUN is just TOo far away! How could we possibly harness its ENERGY???

- The title to this story is just as stupid as the person who think that this will happen, solar power might be great for little batteries, but in the long run, won''''t compare with fossil fuels, that is just insane to think that.
18c6, You are part of the problem, your moronic intellectually challenged congress and there goon activists keep this country from progressing and you try to point your finger at everyone else, this congress led by the cowards Piglosi and Ried, have the lowest rating than any other congress in this nations history! They did that in less than a year after taking office in 06'''' it is even lower than Bush''''s rating. You liberals try to make yourselves feel good by pointing your fingers at others, you have no agenda on anything, just the broke wheel concept and what are we agoing to do...nothing by your accounts, get a life or just shut up!

GOD BLESS A TRUE AMERICAN LIKE GOMER!!
The technology will never work, we do not have the smarts and gumption to get off of fossil fuel, we simply need to find a way to drill for more and ultimately pray to god when it runs out they he will create more!!
GOD BLESS AMERICAN INGENUITY!! FOSSIL FUELS FOREVER!!

- Awesome ideas, but will people (governments, corporations, individuals) spend the money?
The world will never not need oil - the big picture proves that. There''s no reason why it can''t be used more efficiently... - Reply to this comment
- I don''''t get it. I thought you said we need the best.

This is the change America needs. But you will never completely keep money from affecting politics. I believe a further necessity is to keep money from concentrating unnecessarily. Doing so keeps the votes and propaganda it buys from coming from too few voices. Prior to Reagan, the richest 10% of this country were prevented from owning more than 55% of her by substantive progressive taxation. NOW, the richest 10% own over 75% of the country. That means that 75% of the media, and 75% of our Congressmen, are working for just 10% of the country. Not enough voices are being heard. You can pass/enforce all sorts of laws to ''keep'' money out of politics, but money talks, and poverty walks. Its natural.
We just need to make sure money talks from as many directions as possible. - Reply to this comment
- The repbublicans took money and bribes and have been part of the problem.

So your belief is that democrats are innocent and never took money or bribes?
I believe that the democrats controlled congress for many years and BOTH parties have become corrupted spending fools .. and obviously both have been bought and paid for by corporate interests ..
Anyone who beleives that the current two party system in this country has a "good" side is naive .. and foolish .. this mindset will only perpetuate this country''s dismal fall economically ..
American citizens should be pressing for term limits in ALL elected offices .. in order to get fresh ideas and lose the power/ego struggle many of the career politcians display .. and the "how can my family members and I benefit financially" from the foolish American public.
Term Limits and irradication of corporate pay offs and lobbyists ... we see how the big "change" artist Obama thinks .. he has decided to forgo public campaign financing and raise every dime possible to buy his election .. some say 400-500 MILLION .. now what could a change artist do with that kind of money? - Reply to this comment
- Last week, Exxon Mobil, Shell, Total and BP.. entered into final negotiations for their NO-BID contracts to run Iraq''s oil industry. Those are the same Western companies Saddam Hussein threw out of Iraq 36 years ago when he nationalized the oil industry.
Oh yeah, that war had ''nothing'' to do with oil. Think they''ll ever subsidize solar with 3 trillion dollars and 4,000 American lives? - Reply to this comment
- I think Obama is headed in the right direction on this one. There is no easy answer anymore, we need to start setting our sights on a solution that will solve independence and environmental issues once and for all. It''s time to put our minds to work in America again.

- Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Geo. H.W. Bush, Clinton, and Geo. W. Bush (thus far) all failed to embark on this obviously correct path. Common objections to this are 1) it is too technically difficult and 2) it would be too expensive. I say 1) Americans are experts at overcoming technology''''s problems ( we got to the moon and we now have a lander on Mars, don''''t we) and 2) could it have cost us more than what we face now? We can do it, if we have the political will.

Powerful lobbies fought it. Carter was attacked by the right wing media and right wingers continue attacking. The repbublicans took money and bribes and have been part of the problem. - Reply to this comment
- Think about it folks.
The price of one years worth of death and destruction in Iraq is enough money to put solar panels on every home in America.
Oil companies want war not solar panels. - Reply to this comment

Its amazing how much oil is burned essentially to heat water. Solar water heaters use 19th century technology, yet gov''t programs to encourage their use simply aren''t broad enough. Its almost as though the gov''t WANTS us to burn oil ;) - Reply to this comment

- This would have solved major domestic and foreign policy problems in one fell swoop. Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Geo. H.W. Bush, Clinton, and Geo. W. Bush (thus far) all failed to embark on this obviously correct path.

Exactly why we need to STOP electing these career, "experienced" politicians, and need to start electing people with actual vision for a better America.
Not the career politician mindset of, "what can I do today, to get re-elected tomorrow". - Reply to this comment
- In 1973 we had the Arab oil embargo. If the US government had announced and followed through with a Manhattan-type project at that time to develop solar power to heat and cool our buildings, light our cities, and power our cars, we wouldn''t have an energy problem today and the Middle East would have been consigned to the obscurity it so richly deserves. This would have solved major domestic and foreign policy problems in one fell swoop. Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Geo. H.W. Bush, Clinton, and Geo. W. - Flex fuel may be a viable alternative for Brazil (overlooking environmental costs of destroying the rain forest)- it is a very poor model for the USA - growing sugarcane almost ruined the Everglades.
Destroying the food crop (corn) for ethanol is one of the stupidest ideas to come along in a hundred years. It has raised the price of groceries by thirty percent and cost the government billions as welfare for farmers.
Natural gas is very expensive here because Congress has outlawed drilling in places that are abundant in natural gas.
Energy independence is a worthy goal with conservation, solar, nuclear and drilling for oil offshore. Solar hot water heating can save the average family 20% in electricity right now for a relatively small investment and has been available for 75+ years. - Reply to this comment
