Comments on: Fit To Serve? Most Young Adults Aren't
Just Three Of 10 People Between 17 And 24 Even Qualify For The Army
- the "soft generation" is a good term.....as a substitute teacher who helps at lunch time I see most of the kids wasting all this healthy food that the county mandates and the kids just eat the desert.....chips, pizza and fries they will eat.....the rest is thrown in the trash can....physical activity? what''s that.....they aren''t required to participate and unless you are going out for a particular sport you don''t have any physical activity required.....what? maybe 20% of the kids in the schools I work in are in shape.......the rest are obese and many are severely obese......

- A lot of the Bush relatives are in good shape. His two daughters, and Jeb''s boys. Hell, they could get in without a problem.

Blaming "Liberals" for obesity?
-------------------------------
I blame Liberalism for a mindset that has numbed the American psyche. Their position on "personal freedom" (as they define it) has resulted in horrible, disgraced public schools that has elimated thing like PE, a holocaust of death for the unborn,"tolerance'' for invaders and so many other things.
Liberals can be totalitarian, and they are. They are a plague upon America. Liberals are closer to being the KKK, with their own set of non-values, than any conservative group. - Reply to this comment
- Until it was done away with in the 1970''s, there used to be a bureacracy called the Selective Service or more affectionately known as "THE DRAFT"! To those who were "drafted" we all know it was anything but "selective".
You had to have cancer, leprosy, an arm or leg missing, or be the son of a politician to avoid the draft. If you were overweight, they put you on a "crash" diet to lose the weight. If you were anemic, they shot you full of steroids.
It didn''t matter if you had sexual problems, a weak heart or stomach, were a high school dropout, or were a raving lunatic; in you went! Cannon fodder!
Today, the military wants "cannon fodder", only a more educated, more physically fit, more family oriented kind of "cannon fodder"!
How about "scooping up" some hard-nosed, young neocon red necks out there and sending them to Afghanistan! The one''s who are "armchair generals", think of Rush Limbaugh as "John the Baptist", and think the Great Emperor Bush II is a military "genuis"!
SIG HEIL, BUSH!!!!
sig heil, DEFINITELY MORE OF THE SAME, McCain!!!! - Reply to this comment

Oh pulleez! You know that, without regulations promoted by ''liberals'' in our schools, you''d sooner find a Coke and a snickers bar there than an apple. Guess where THAT leads? - Reply to this comment
- OneAmerican: How wrong you are. I consider myself a little bit liberal, but anyway...It doesn''t take a conservative to recognize and respect the sacrifices someone makes to serve this nation, especially on a day like today. We not only owe the servicemen and women a debt of gratitude, but we owe them our lives. Just think about it for a moment.

- Here is a story the liberals will try hard to ignore today:
BAGHDAD %u2014 Servicemembers from all over Iraq gathered here today in the Al Faw Palace rotunda on Camp Victory, to re-enlist and celebrate America%u2019s Independence Day.
All 1,215 servicemembers celebrated by raising their right hand and pledging to continue defending the %u2018land of the free%u2019 in what is the largest re-enlistment ceremony since the all-volunteer force began in 1973, according to the Multi-National Force - Iraq Command Sergeant Major, Command Sgt, Maj. Marvin L. Hill.
%u201CVolunteering to continue to serve our nation, while deployed - is both noble and inspiring,%u201D said Gen. David Petraeus, commanding general, Multi-National Force - Iraq. %u201CIt is, as award citations often state, in keeping with the finest traditions of our military services.%u201D
Petraeus presided over the ceremony and led the airmen, Marines, Sailors, and Soldiers in their oath to defend their country against all enemies both foreign and domestic on this day of celebration of America winning its independence.
"We recognize the sacrifices they make and the sacrifices their families and communities make as they serve in Iraq," Hill said. %u201CThese servicemembers know the cost of war and they are still re-enlisting.%u201D - Reply to this comment
- THEY TOTALLY MISSED THE POINT!
THE BRAIN DOES NOT FULLY DEVELOP IN THE MALE TILL AROUND 22, MUCH EARLIER FOR THE GIRLS!
THAT PART OF THE BRAIN LAST TO DEVELOP IS THE FRONTAL CORTEX! THAT IS WHERE WISE DECISIONS ARE MADE!
EVER WONDER WHY TEENAGERS DO STUPID THINGS? THIS IS WHY! BUT THE MILITARY PUTS THEM ON A BATTLEFIELD WITH A VERY IMPORTANT SURVIVAL TOOL MISSING! THE ABILITY TO MAKE A GOOD DECISION AND AVOID BEING INJURED OR KILLED!
WHICH MAKES ME BELIEVE THE LEADERS HAVE HAD THAT PART OF THEIR BRAIN REMOVED OR THEY JUST HAVE DEPRAVED INDIFFERENCE! - Reply to this comment
- "The rest are ineligible either because they didn%u2019t graduate from high school, have a police record or are not physically fit."
Further proof that the U.S. is not dying, we are already dead.
Liberalism is eating us like a cancer, 15 million poor, uneducated, non-English speaking people have invaded us, we are killing our unborn at an astonishing rate, we are dependent on our enemies for oil, and we have 2 unfit candidates running for President.
Democracy has failed. - Reply to this comment
- What was I thinking back in 1968 - over weight! Yeah, that would have worked.

- What does anyone expect? In most schools gym class and after school activities have given way to the fact that there is LESS money being spent in those areas. Add that to the over commercialization of junk foods, video games and other non-activity type entertainment you get kids and adults that simply can not make the grade mentally, physically and emotionally.
This has become a ME - ME - ME world folks. Curtisy of big business who will serve all our "instant gratification" needs. They will even invent new ones for you all for the sake of the almighty dollar. - Reply to this comment
- Watch the movie ''WALL-E''. The Americans on that futuristic space-ship have, through over-mechanization and over-eating, become obese lard-butts who ride around on trollies and have trouble getting up to push a button. But, whats really troubling about that image, is how CLOSE they look to some Americans living today. The movie-makers are clearly saying: "This is what could happen to ALL of us if current production and consumption trends continue".
Asking individual parents to buck the trend of mega-million dollar advertising and production budgets all focussed on super-sizing their kids is, I think, asking too much. People need to come together (dare I say it) collectively and think through solutions to this problem. Its not really a problem elsewhere in the world (yet). - Reply to this comment

- mydiatribe said: "Further evidence that LIBERAL VALUES have completely eroded our willingness to do whatever is necessary to survive!" Of course thats a ridiculous remark. But I do think our ''weight'' problem is an artifact of living with a McDonaldized capitalism (i.e. one that focusses on selling the lowest common denominator). Essentially, we sell our children CALORIES as opposed to NUTRIENTS. Thats because calories are dirt cheap but can be made enticingly delicious with enough corn syrup in them, sold with glossy advertisements of fit perpetually young people eating them, and heavily marked up in price. We celebrate this kind of capitalism, its the kind Republicans point to when they point to our ''cornucopia'' of product! NUTRIENTS, on the other hand, are expensive to produce, difficult to make taste ''sexier'', and don''t lend themselves to glossy commercialization. Hence, we don''t make ''em, and hence our kids dont eat them.
Selling to the lowest common denominator: Its why we''re ''super-sized''. its why we''re stupid. Its why we buy Hummers just a few short years before $5/gal gas. Its how terrorism can be used to bankrupt the country. Its how we KNEW oil was running out but did nothing to prepare for it. Its why we have no savings. - Reply to this comment
- liberal values this, conservatives that....i know lots of unfit people on both sides of the political spectrum. and, according to some, there was no drug abuse until the last 50 years. what partisan hogwash
