Comments on: Gas Prices Put Chill On Vacation Season
Along East Coast, Home Sales, Rentals Down, Causing Ripple Effects In Summer Vacation Market
- "Who are these morons that keep talking about domestic drilling like that will solve any of our problems? It doesn''t matter where the oil comes from it will still be sold at world market prices. Do they think because it came for the USA the producers will sell it for less? - Posted by trillion1 at 12:34 PM : Jun 29, 2008
You know what, this is the all time idiotic statement I have ever had the pleasure of reviewing.
Have you ever heard of supply and demand, trillion1 ?
The more supply, the lower the cost.
OPEC has in the past artifically limited output to make oil prices go up. In the last 15 years, oil has been in higher and higher demand due to the Chinese economy surge.
The US has more oil that any other nation in the world.
Congress just has to say, "ok, you can drill in Alaska, or use insitu mining techniques for oil shale, but you are not allowed to export the oil."
What do you think - the oil companies will thumb their noses ? HAH! And, if they do, anyone want to start an oil company with me ? - Reply to this comment

- Mcain & Bush want to give Big Oil more Federal land for oil drilling but continue to ignore the facts.
In March of 2008 a Cambridge, MA. oil & Gas consulting firm issued a report to Congress. In that report the Congress was told that the laws of supply & demand no longer apply to oil. Demand is constant with only small fluctuations at any given time. Although world demand will increase their is plenty of supply. BIG OIL currently leases 90 million acres of oil & gas land & offshore sites, 70 million are not in use. It is not in Big Oil''s economic interest to use these 70 million acres as they have enough supply at this time. Big oil does not want to loose profit by increasing supply , after all selling oil products is their business. Additional offshore and Alaskan wilderness leases are not necessary, Big Oil just wants additional control of these areas for future marketing.
The Saudi''s and Big Oil are very happy with the Bush & Cheney energy policy which eliminated Iraqi world oil market manipulation. Saddam kept prices down by selling cheap thus preventing the Saudi''s & Big Oil from getting the prices up. Bush & Cheney opened Pandora''s box & now things will never be the same. - Reply to this comment

BLAME THE DEMONIC-RATS
THE DEMONIC-RAT DOCTRINE,,,
On February 16, 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt said the "the defense of Saudi Arabia is vital to the defense of the United States." On February 14, 1945, while returning from the Yalta Conference, Roosevelt met with King Ibn Saud of Saudi Arabia on the Great Bitter Lake in the Suez Canal, the first time a U.S. president had visited the Persian Gulf region.
The Carter Doctrine was a policy proclaimed by President of the United States Jimmy Carter in his State of the Union Address on 23 January 1980, which stated that the United States would use military force if necessary to defend its national interests in the Persian Gulf region. The doctrine was a response to the 1979 invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union, and was intended to deter the Soviet Union%u2014the Cold War adversary of the United States%u2014from seeking hegemony in the Persian Gulf. After stating that Soviet troops in Afghanistan posed "a grave threat to the free movement of Middle East oil," Carter proclaimed:
Let our position be absolutely clear: An attempt by any outside force to gain control of the Persian Gulf region will be regarded as an assault on the vital interests of the United States of America, and such an assault will be repelled by any means necessary, including military force. - Electricity is 50 percent to 75 percent cheaper than gasoline as a source of vehicle power. In addition, energy experts have said that electricity is typically far more environmentally friendly than gasoline. The United States has more than enough electricity to recharge the cars at night, and utilities are responding by proposing lower fees for that time period.
A recent study for the U.S. Department of Energy said the nation''s electricity infrastructure is underused most of the time. The study said the existing power system could recharge about three-quarters of all the cars, pickup trucks and SUVs now on the road. The idea is that most people would plug in their vehicles at night, when power use is lowest.
"If the U.S. switched to plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, the country would save 3.8 million barrels of oil a day - roughly twice what new drilling would provide - according to the Natural Resources Defense Council."
Electric car for the masses to be made in Southern California
2008-04-22, Los Angeles Times
Norwegian automaker Think Global said Monday it planned to sell low-priced electric cars to the masses and will introduce its first models in the U.S. by the end of next year. The battery-powered Think City will be able to travel up to 110 miles on a single charge, with a top speed of about 65 mph, the company said. It will be priced below $25,000. - Reply to this comment
- trillion1,
I am a moron that says drilling will help. If we have more oil the price will go down no matter where it''s sold. It is a global commodity.
rudy654,
The American oil industry made 7% profit last year. The Dow average was 8.5% profit. Ungodly profits?
trishab4,
there are more than 3 owners of the companies you mentioned. Try hundreds of thousands via direct stock ownership, 401Ks & pension funds. And I''m sure Cheney wants to strangle the world & the economy. My only question is why do I feel compelled to respond to such drivel? - Reply to this comment

- LL20WT,
You are correct, drilling can''t last forever but until we get to forever we need oil to run & make stuff. But if we don''t have an affordable energy supply all of our efforts will be spent trying to just survive day to day. We won''t have money or time to develop hydrogen cars or public transporters (beam me up, Scotty). I am for everything: coal to gas liquification, oil shale, wind, solar, hydro, nuclear,
biodiesel, ethanol, sugar based ethanol, E85, switch grass, wood chips & everything I forgot to list I am for it. But right now we need to drill. - Reply to this comment
- The upside to the high cost of gas is the upward pressure on solar and other renewable sources of energy and perhaps the resulting drop in the rate fossil fuels are burned. Good for the environment, at least. We pay for climate change one way or another.

- gas in Mexico $2.34 a gal I love Mexico..
If we import oil from Mexico then why are they paying $ 2.34 a gallon and here we are paying $ 4.26 / gallon for gasoline?
Is the peso that much stronger than the dollar? - Reply to this comment
- At that time the U.S. will WISH we produced 75 percent or more of our own oil. $7 gas? How about not enough gas available AT ANY COST?
Posted by edintex at 11:18 AM
Yeah, well, too bad we can''t. Our oil reserves make up only 3% of the world''s while consumption is 25%. There is no way to bridge than math without renewables and staggering cuts in consumption. - Reply to this comment

There is no gas shortage and the US IS the THIRD LARGEST PRODUCER OF OIL IN THE WORLD. Furthermore, for some odd reason, lands that the oil companies could be drilling on, leased lands, they aren''t. The oil companies have been raking in unheard of profits, and I won''t accept from you or anyone else who trolls for these people that they are the innocent victims of all that profit. - Reply to this comment
- DONT FORGET: Just keep on ignoring what the oil companies have to say about whats is causing these high prices. They warned the government back in the 1980s that this was coming. But you east and west coasters enjoyed the $10 barrel. The automakers REALLY enjoyed good times then too. At the same time, Texas and Louisianna had lost hundreds of thousands of jobs. Businesses closed. Homes were foreclosed on. People threw themselves out of building windows. No congressional inquiries. No help at all. YOU ALL WERE WARNED. You all chose to ignore. Enjoy the $141/barrel oil now. You deserve it. Just dont move down here. The refineries already stink it up enough as it is. Besides, you all have made it clear that you dont want to see those unsightly oil rigs on land or at sea. Enjoy your nice views.
