Hey CBS, how much did you spend on your Christmas party last year? Or parties for your national accounts? I''''m sure your shareholders would like to know how much...

Oh but the private sector is free from so much oversight. CEO salaries are just the tip of the iceberg. CFO salaries are immune from revelation and oversight amid the other multinational corporate expenditures.

Our government has become the right wings scapegoat for abuse and the private sector, the large corporations the loophole for exploitation by a ruling class.

Our government is working less and less for the common good. The fascists have attacked it, berated it and played on the prejudices of the people, dividing the people, in order to make the government theirs. The right wing has established a multitude of faux democracies around the world and now it''s becoming the american people''s turn to face this fate.

Katie couric is grasping at something to get ratings.

Katie Couric and the multitude of corporate hacks making multi-million dollar a year salaries with added bonuses like to keep the focus on them. Private sector has been granted immunity from scrutiny which is why the cronies who back Bush want to privatize more. The more the government is privatized the more it can serve the affluent and be free of scrutiny.

as opposed to Bush who visits Vets between fund raisers and have tax payers pick up part of the tab rather than corporations.

Or tax subsidies going to oil companies despite $98.00 a barrel

I can go on.

NASA has a vital role to play in the national psyche (tell me how we will feel seeing China on the moon.) not to mention actual scientific discoveries (given the pathetic state of science ed in this country most don''t get this either)

It has suffered from a lack of political direction like Kennedy gave it back in the 60s.

Katie couric is grasping at something to get ratings.

Well stated, watcher269! NASA is one of the only governmental agencies that I am PROUD of! NASA diligently works to make life on Earth better through scientific inquiry. If only American citizens were educated enough to comprehend the technology! Yes, the NASA team, along with their international partners, PROVE that there IS intelligent life on Earth. To Infinity & Beyond NASA!

I''''m having some trouble with the people who seem to be thinking that Katie Couric is picking on NASA over this. The fact of the matter is there is a lot of government waste and this is just another piece of it. CBS, Britany Spears, sports stadium (privately funded), NASCAR are all private complanies and should not have to answer to anyone but their shareholders for extravagant spending. Tax-dollar funded programs on the other hand should be scrutinized and waste whereever it''''s found should be eliminated. And yes, your right, there''''s a lot of money spent in Iraq on a war that should have never been started. Our elected officials are also dipping into the pot more than they should be and probably just about every sector you''''ll find waste. The trouble starts when we say we can''''t afford things like children''''s healthcare and yet allow this to go on or That we''''re spending too much on schools and need to cut back on education.

I''m having trouble with the private sector acting as though it has no impact on how it''s greed, waste and abuse is affecting our economy. A fraction of Katie Courics annual salary would cover these annual banquets. You don''t think that doesn''t cost our society that people like her make such outrageous sums of money working for the propagandist media of this country?

Private and public corporations write millions off taxes every year for their entertainment expenses and keep payroll expenses down by offshoring jobs. That seems a bit more newsworthy than what NASA is doing, so what is the real agenda behind this report?

This story could have been made more informative by comparing the similar expenses from another government agency for perspective. Nasa is an easy target becasue of its visibility.
I have no love for Nasa director Griffin, and would much rather any Nasa money that pays for gala dinners go toward funding science missions instead. The contractors and their industry groups can cough up sponsorship money if need be.

THIS IS A B/S STORY AND EVERYONE KNOWS IT. THERE IS NOTHING DIFFERENT FROM THESE EVENTS THAN ALL THE TAXPAYER PAYED BANQUETS CONGRESS THROWS FOR ITSELF YEAR-ROUND. CBS AND THIS REPORTER DEFINITELY HAVE A PERSONAL GRIPE AGAINST EITHER NASA OR SOMEONE WHO WORKS THERE. THAT''''S THE REAL STORY.
