- Mass migrations are frequently a threat to major civilizations. Check out the Mycenaeans and the Dorian Invasion in Greece. Or, a better warning example might by the Germanics, who slowly entered into the ever weakening Roman Empire. In both cases, great civilizations fell and Dark Ages began.

Every illegal in this country that is NOT a criminal fleeing justice and over 16 years old should serve one term in the military to earn their citizenship.
20 million illegals are already here, let them fight for America and "I" will stand with them to get their citizenship papers. - Reply to this comment

In Florida, we not only have Mexicans, we have Guatemalans, Hatians, Cubans Hondurans and several more.
Very few know how to speak english, thus keeping them in the perpetual state of need.
They are not appreciative for/of any assistance they are given, they expect it.
True, in the schools, it takes a lot of time away from students who are there to learn, because some don''t speak english--which hurts because the school system places extreme stress on our kids with the FCAT tests.
That is only part of the problem here, it''s the whole social/governmental priviledges they are given.
We need to stop, send them back and let them come back when they know english and can be self supporting. - Reply to this comment

- Two points: When my grandmother arrived in 1920, she went through Ellis Island &experienced a "medical check" before being approved. She saw a family get sent back because of health problems. Today, the US is experiencing a rise in drug resistant TB . . . is anyone checking the illegal immigants for health problems? Is a health problem a reason to deport, or do we now pay for medical treatment? (By we, I mean taxpayers!)
Second point: As an educator, I have many illegal kids. Many are sweet and hard working, but a number of these kids do NOT share our perceptions of the importance of school. I''ve had good kids tell me that their grades don''t count -- that their job is more important. In the case of that student, his parents have illegal jobs and he has an illegal job. In addition, if he doesn''t pass graduation tests, my school might be labeled "Failing" by No Child Left Behind. So, the Federal government judges our schools, which are filled with children lacking sufficient education and English language skills, but it will NOT enforce our borders.
By the way, I am a liberal democrat, but I am also a historian. Mass migrations are frequently a threat to major civilizations. Check out the Mycenaeans and the Dorian Invasion in Greece. Or, a better warning example might by the Germanics, who slowly entered into the ever weakening Roman Empire. In both cases, great civilizations fell and Dark Ages began. - Reply to this comment

- sbmm---BUT your mom came here legally-as did my grandparents from Germany--they learned english and never spoke it in front of my father and his siblings.
I once asked my grandmother to teach me german, she siad, this is america, we speak english(in her thick, but understandable accent) and I respected her for that because I could see her pride in what she had achieved. - Reply to this comment

- Hey, what about "ILLEGAL" do folks not understand? They came here uninvited. They snuck in here. They came without the knowledge, consent and approval of the government.
We don''t know who they are, where they are, how many are here or what they are doing.
Think about that for a minute!
They consumer more than they produce and now they have demands. They want this and that and all they can get. When we say NO we are told we are the problem...not the ILLEGALS. Oh, no! The ILLEGALS are the good folks...Real Americans are the bad folks.
I say every city, county and state in the Union should pass very severe anti illegal laws. And maybe then they will get the message...LEAVE AND COME BACK LEGALLY. - Reply to this comment
- The children of these illegals take up more of a teachers time than they have to spare because they don''t understand english.
They have classes for the parents, but few attend. They don''t want anymore than they have, and it''s costing all of us. - Reply to this comment
- Liberal isn''t supposed to mean stupid!!
I''m all for giving people a chance for a better life, but when they''re happy with the "status" quo, who refuse to help themselves--its time to go!! - Reply to this comment
- Michelle: It is a win-win situation. American-born children gain nothing if a few of their fellow students grow up to become unemployed, or underemployed, or criminals. Why would we want that? What good would that do?

- There are poor Americans...I was taught as a foster child charity begins at home before charity for abroad. American citzens first...

- Who can really make any kind of fair or just argument as to why illegal immigrants who came here as minors should be denied American citizenship? Why create a poor underclass of people who did absolutely nothing wrong except be born to poor immigrants who came to this country? It wouldn''t be good for America, and it''s not like we would be rewarding them - since they were unable to make the decision to break any law or rule.

- No they are not American as they are illgal children and to be American they must be nationised then they will called American. They are citazen of their birth nation. They will be deported. Sure they may be cute but yer job is to help become American citzens and then their dreams may come true. That means they raise their raise paw to take the oath of being a citzen of this nation.

- I live in California, with many immigrants. I see them every day. They vary greatly, but most of those that came here illegally were very poor in Mexico, and all of them seem to try to speak English. I''ve certainly never had anyone say anything rude to me b/c I don''t speak Spanish.
I thought liberals were supposed to be thoughtful and compassionate and your handle is liberalme? - Reply to this comment
