"We don't necessarily know who these engineers are. We didn't catch Dr. Khan before the damage was done."

How many people have ever made a nuke in their basement? Besides the engineering you need many other things. You need material, you need the shielding to keep the material from killing you, You need the technology to manufacture the hardware which you have so carefully engineered [It takes more than a local machine shop.] to make the bomb go boom when you want it and stay quiet when you don't. You also have to be able to test all this to make sure it works. So you need an immense amount of money to buy the infrastructure and people to make all this happen.

In other words, you need a government. If you didn't need this, every disaffected group on the planet would have acquired a bomb sometime in the last 60 years.

If a government gives a terrorist group a nuke, we will have a problem with a terrorist nuke. We will not have a problem with such at thing being manfactured by anyone else.

Until that happens, or until we can stop Iran, the government most likely to do it, we are better served by looking for the most vulnerable targets for the tried and true low-tech solutions [including stealing airplanes] that the terrorists have already used to best effect.

Trying to stop the spread of nuclear technology and small nuclear devices is akin to trying to stop prostitution or drug dealings. It cannot be done! But that does not mean we should stop trying. Unfortunately, the biggest offender is good old US of A, one of the main suppliers of nuclear technology to "allies." Allies of today are enemies of tomorrow and so on. USA supplies and trains our "friends" today so that they have the means to fight us tomorrow. It is a never ending cycle of violence and more violence. War is a business and is *** profitable for the arms industries that many of our politicians have vested interests. The invasion of Iraq might very well impoverished the nation, but the arms industries are enjoying wind-fall profits. Any doubts about this, one should ask Cheney, Rumsfeld, and the of the politicians.

drummer94,

Your blind faith in technology is astounding. ABCNews did a series of reports where they snuck nukes into Baltimore Harbor on container ships. The containers weren't detected, even after unloading.

It could be set off in the harbor before even docking and take out a Baltimore or Boston or San Francisco.

zopa108,

We don't necessarily know who these engineers are. We didn't catch Dr. Khan before the damage was done.

Our entire program for tracking the material and the people capable of enabling it has been damaged by the outing of Brewster & Jennings and we are all far more unsafe as a result. Of course, the White House won't tell you that, since it eas them who made us that way.

The message here is clear:
LET US BE FEARFULL ! ! !
All of us should be afraid, very afraid.
We should become a nation of fearful morons.
What happened to "Home of the brave"?
The message now is: "We have to fear everything"
Now go forth and spread the message ma' fello' Americans.

Well obviously terrorists would like to use a nuclear weapon. So would I,if I were a terrorist. But they will get one only if someone gives it to them, they're not going to make one on their own. As the guy who make nukes for Pakistan pointed out, the problem with making nukes is not the physics, but the engineering. And the smaller the weapon the better the engineering must be.

The people who are likely to give it to them are known. They mostly live in Iran. So do something about Iran before they engineer the bombs to give away. You can't do something about Iran because you are overcommitted in Iraq? Well, gee, why didn't you think of that in 2002? Because you're an idiot? Well, I guess we'll just have to wait until we can dispense with the idiot.

Let's hope the Iranians aren't very good engineers.

Ditto....for the people...

But, we do not need another civil war or revolution here.....our country is too divided as it is. What would be great though would be a housecleaning in Washington, D.C., but do it at the ballot box. The biggest problem with that is that it takes years, and at the rate this train is traveling toward a big crash, do we have time?

This article is meant to scare, and more and more of fear mongering stories will appear in the months to come. We are supposed to think that we are safe with the REPUBS in office and must vote for them because of their great job of protecting us. Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies seems to be their guidepost. Bits and pieces of information leak out if it is in their favor, but try getting the truth....the whole truth.

Just think what life would be like if ALL governments vested as much energy in disarming themselves and working together as they do now with control, power, money and greed. This idea of ONE WORLD ORDER is evil for everyone in this country, except the elite rich folks and corporations. It will enslave us and remove any vestige of freedoms under the guises of security.

With the technology we have today, detection of a device should not be difficult on our shores. The disaster would come elsewhere. The FBI should not be playing the fear factor here.

pwrslm,

You seem to confuse fact with theory. It's a fact that the CIA trained Bin Laden in terror methods when he was fighting the Russians.

Another fact that you righties try to dismiss is that the White House outed our CIA network for tracking the path of WMD around the world.

Another fact is that CIA officals have stated off the record that the damage has set our tracking of the Iranian program baack about 10 years. They are expected to have a bomb in 2 years. if we decide to attack their program we'll have to guess where to attack and hope we get lucky.

You all still complain about the U.S.S. Cole and WTC1 like Clinton could've prevented them but turn away from the fact that Bush did this intentionally. That's what's really sad.

Suitcase nukes are the real threat to America, not insurgents in Iraq.

It's pretty upsetting also to consider that the CIA helped to make Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda possible in the first place.

sure is, and although they thought is was a good idea at the time - it's turned out to haunt us.

how many other "OBL's" have we created out there?

In Central america, ME, South America - our crazy "export of democracy" using covert ops and getting alot in innocent people killed just because we didn't like the way they voted!

If a country elects a socialist or communist or theocratic regime - IT THEIR PROBLEM, NOT OURS !

The more "tiny" nukes get produced, the more likely one is to get hijacked. Yet the USA has launched a major program to produce compact nukes and tactical nukes. The Bushit / Chickenshithawk administration is already floating trial balloons about using such weapons against Iran ("bunker busters"), without any Iranian nuclear threat against the US. The USA has had ongoing research programs in designing backpack nukes. How many H1B visa holders, visitors from China, and Aldrich Ames types have had access to the research results?

Americans need to finally understand that the things they allow the government to do to the rest of the world can come home to roost.

Thank you Dr. Teller!

MORE UNADULTERATED PRO ISRAELI BUSHIT LIES!

It is not anti Semitic to believe there are millions of other good people in the Middle East!

Even Eisenhower had problems with Israeli groups but he did not let them buy him!

Founded in 1953 by Isaiah L. "Si" Kenen, AIPAC's original name was the American Zionist Committee for Public Affairs. According to UCLA political science professor and author, Steven Spiegel, "the tension between the Eisenhower administration and Israeli supporters was so acute that there were rumors that the administration would investigate the American Zionist Council. Therefore, an independent lobbying committee was formed, which years later was renamed [AIPAC].Today, AIPAC has over 100,000 members.[1]
Activities and stated goals
AIPAC's stated purpose is to lobby the Congress of the United States on issues and legislation "to ensure that the U.S.-Israel relationship is strong so that both countries can work together" to meet the challenges of "stopping Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons,[2] It regularly meets with members of Congress and holds events where it can share its views. AIPAC has been effective in gaining support for Israel among members of Congress and White House administrations.
The New York Times described AIPAC on July 6, 1987 as "a major force in shaping United States policy in the Middle East."

Keep in mind that no terrorist can ever destroy America and our freedoms, but the government sure can.
There are some in our government who would like nothing more than to have another terrorist attack on America soil, simply so they can call it a "state of emergency" and impose martial law and the destruction of what's left of our constitutional rights.
It's pretty upsetting also to consider that the CIA helped to make Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda possible in the first place.

Bush, Cheney, Rove, Rice and Mueller are more dangerous to the security and well-being of America than any single nuclear device. Their demonstrated lack of respect for the Constitution and the judiciary are legion. Mueller is little more than an egocentric hack whose job it is to perpetuate the Bush administration's insanity. Unfortunately, their approaching departure won't end the deleterious effects.

Well the FAILURES BECAUSE OF INCOMPETENCE )FBI) are at it again. Those paranoid fools will do anything to put fear into the people (especially the eldery) so as to remain in power. That agency should be eliminated along with the CIA and an organization like Germany had during the 2nd world war-The German Secret Police-and replace the FBI and CIA, then I believe you would have an efficient law enforcement agency. There would be swift justice and no 20 years of appeals at the taxpayers expence.

Under Karl Rove's and the Neo-Con's plan of a "permanent GOP Majority"...

...there's nothing they would like better than a Democrat in the White House and Democrat control throughout Congress, to have a nuclear device explode in the U.S. from a terrorist attack.

Millions of GOP lemmings will point the finger of blame at the Democrat president, (even if it was the day after inauguration). Thus forcing tens-of-millions of sheeple to vote Republican purely out of fear.

There's the plan.... just in case you were wondering how Karl Rove would accomplish such a "permanent GOP majority".
