CBS News Exclusive: Parkinson's-Afflicted Actor Tells Katie Couric He Wasn't Acting In Ad
- Dear Katie,
Earlier this year i was told i might have parkinson's..thank god it turned out to be vertigo..bad, but no where near parkinson's...
When i thought that i had Parkinsons's i turned to Michaels web site! It gave me hope and helped me to understan how devastating it was. Well god spared me but i will never forget or let Michael down...Thanks for dedicating time to my most important issue! As far as Rush is concerned I think he's just looking for another 15 minutes f fame...more like shame.
Again Thanks

- Michael J. Fox said in the interview he supported Arlen Spector. I guess it takes a Republican like Spector to have such a serious illness for one to fully understand the importance of stem cell research. Perhaps more Republicans and or their family members need to fall victim to serious illnesses such as Parkinson's, paralysis, cancer, Alzheimers, etc. before they see the light on this moral/political issue. These IVF stem cells will otherwise be useless. Why not allow science labs put them to some use? My heart breaks for anyone who must suffer through anything such as Parkinsons. I was one of those teenage girls who did and still does have a crush on MJF. You are making a difference, Michael and I hope something comes from all of this in your lifetime.

- I have nothing but admiration for Michael J. Fox. The way he has handled his disease has been inspiring. To have to defend his actions to the overrated right wing intolerant small minded fear monger that is Rush Limbaugh is a sad commentary on the media and anyone who would listen to that madman's ranting. I hope Michael knows that those of us with independent thought believe in his cause and his being able to further it anyway he can.

- My response is to Berrysxx. I'm not sure what your history is regarding a "probe inserted into the brain" but it's not what it appears to be. My father had this surgery and was fine for about six months. He's now in a wheelchair because he has major balance problems and can not speak so people can understand him. He's still has to take Parkinson's medication to prevent the tremors and dyskinesia just like before. So if you believe in stem cell research or not your probe in the brain is not the cure-all for this disease.

- Thank you Ms. Couric for the class you and Mr. Fox showed in the interview. Mr. Fox has always been a decent man, and it is a shame to see the toll PD has taken on this fine man. Rush Limbaugh just cannot stand up as tall as you, Ms. Couric and Mr. Fox. Thank you very much!

- Rush said if Michael J. Fox really was shaking so bad then he wasn't taking his medication. Well, maybe he is trying to show us what this disease is really about. Thanks Rush, maybe you can stay off your meds and show us what your really like.

- baia1,
Fox said, "Unfortunately, Senator Jim Talent opposes expanding stem cell research." If you'll notice that is not a lie. Rich Chrismer, Talent's spokesman did not refute this. Chrismer said Talent supports "medical research including stem cell research that doesn't involve cloning or destroying a human embryo." This is already in place and does NOT expand stem cell research.
Fox also said "Senator Talent even wanted to criminalize the science that gives us a chance for hope." The article says Talent "supported a Senate bill that would ban all embryonic stem cell research and impose a million-dollar fine and jail sentence on violators." This means Talent WANTED to make stem cell research a criminal act.
I'm apalled I have to actually repeat something that is as clear as day. There is no need to lie. You don't need to join Rush Limbaugh in his smear campaign against others.
Berrysxx,
Thanks for the comment. It's the IF that Rush included in his statement that irks me. First Rush says he was wrong then he followed it up with an IF, that is very insincere if you ask me. You don't say IF when you truly believe you were wrong. IF is a qualifier that dilutes his statement and sincerity.
coker,
I think you need to check your i facts /i . - Reply to this comment
- Michael did not have the stimulator according to my source, he had some type of lazer or searing of the brain. The stimulator works for most people! Rush didn't say Michael was faking, he just indicated he doesn't act like on the other shows he's been on.

- Guess I should expect anyone watching NBC to be biased towards a liberal. Michael J. Fox should be telling anyone with parkinson's disease that there is hope, not from embronic stem cell research, which has never proven of any value, but with a probe inserted into the brain made by Medtronics. Michael, unfortunately opted for a surgery that was non-reversible and it didn't work for him. That's sad, but for others there is a remedy that is reversible! Check it out if you have the disease, it's awesome!

- My father has had to deal with the effects of PD for the past 15 years and I know what the deep brain stimulator that Fox has had implanted in his brain can do. My father can not find the money for such a procedure but if he did then the shaking would not occur enough to notice. I think that Mr. Fox was shifting around more like a person with Cerebral Palsy and not a guy suffering from PD. If he is exploiting the disease then that%u2019s a shame... if not... I think he needs to be re-diagnosed or sue the doctors that put the stimulator in his brain because it%u2019s not working (maybe it needs new batteries?)
P.S. If you do not share my feelings please leave a comment and lets hear what you think!

- You guys are something else! None of you realize that everything Fox said in the ad was a lie.

- Ronnie,
I think it's the 'if' in Rush's apology that makes it sound like something less than an apology. The 'bigly, hugely' part doesn't help either. It comes out sounding to me like he means it would be big of him to apologize if he turns out to be wrong, rather than an admission of being wrong and feeling remorse it. As Rush often states, he believes he's correct all of the time (or very nearly so), so he probably still believes what he originally said. - Reply to this comment
- Thanks Rush for helping put the Democrats over the top! Thanks Michael J. Fox for being a classy guy, heads above poor Rush. These campaign ads are now national news- Out here in the desert it looks like the Republicans are pretty hard up. We only have vote by mail in Oregon now so the election is almost over. The GOP candidate for Governor was going pretty good for a while but now he's going down in flames with the rest of the GOP ticket. Looks like this gives the big boost to McCaskill- who needs Talent anyway- another Bush clone.

- Aside from admitting he was wrong and apologizing, what would you include in an apology?

- Does this sound like an apology to anyone else? I don't think so. Try again Rush!
""All I'm saying is I've never seen him the way he appears in this commercial for Claire McCaskill," says Limbaugh. "So I will bigly, hugely admit that I was wrong, and I will apologize to Michael J. Fox, if I am wrong in characterizing his behavior on this commercial as an act, especially since people are telling me they have seen him this way on other interviews and in other television appearances."
