- You lost your best when you decided to replace Bob Schieffer with Katie Couric. She is fine at what she did but she is not going to have the grace, presence, and ability to influence like Bob did. He was a gentleman, could laugh at himself, told it with a sincere tone in his voice, and is the kind of man who could be invited in anywhere because he fits in everywhere in America. He had nothing to prove and everything to give his public and that came across very well. I don't think I missed a half a dozen of his broadcasts. But I doubt I will watch more than a half of a dozen of Couric's simply because she is not a reporter and she will be making the news a talk show. Bob simply came in, told the stories like they were, put a human touch on it that only he could, and left us to ponder what we needed to do to make this a better world.I was a fan of his long before he took over the nightly news and will be a fan of his long after. CBS and the fans lost on this one even if Katie was a good host in another medium.

- As a dedicated watcher of CBS Nightly News for years now, I was sad to see Dan Rather go. I think I am even sadder to see Bob Schieffer go. (At least we'll still have Face the Nation.)
With the departure of Bob and the way John Roberts was passed over for the job, I will no longer watch CBS Nightly News.
Looks like it will be NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams for me from now on. - Reply to this comment
- What I find in today's news is that the reporters view themselves as movie stars - when in fact where are the true journalists of years past? Why make such a fuss when Katie left the Today Show and hence all the fuss with CBS. It is no wonder that people are turning to other venues to get their news. When will management realize we just want neutral reporting of the facts as they see it and that is all - where or where have the journalists of Morrow days gone - indeed they no longer exists.

- I HAVE NEVER TRUSTED CBS NEWS SINCE RATHER'S SLANT. I WILL CONTINUE TO WATCH MY NEWS ON FOX NETWORK. BUT I'M VERY, VERY HAPPY THAT THIS DORK HAS LEFT THE TODAY SHOW, AND IF YOU THINK YOU GOT A DEAL FOR 15MM, I HAVE A BRIDGE I'M TRYING TO SELL.
SHE'S HISTORY WITHIN TWO YEARS. - Reply to this comment
- I'm weighing back in hours later because imagerk (how do you pronounce that?) called me a blowhard with a female inferiority complex. I was merely observing that some people seem to me to not like Katie because she breaks the mold--i.e. not a masculine warhorse. I do grant you that she's not a seasoned foreign correspondent, but I don't think her career path thus far renders her incapable or inappropriate for this new role.
The more I read of these comments the more I see that a lot of the anti-Katie commenters are the types who are obsessed with ferreting out a supposed liberal media bias, and the particular swift-boating professional anti-CBS types who can't wait to get onto sites like this and vent their spleens. A few people are even questioning CBS's relevance, so why are they on this website.

- I am SO sorry you're gone now. I kinda always thought of you as a fatherly type. You have wit and comedy, while at the same time, being a complete professional. I will miss you SO much on the Evening News. I cried last night when you cried. You seem and have always seemed to me to be a 100% genuine person, unpretentious. Your family is lucky to have a man like you and it sounds like you're lucky to have them!! God bless you and I hope to see you on the telly often.

- Bob Schieffer is such an awesome person. I have really enjoyed Bob on the CBS Evening News the past 18 months. I watched his last show last night with tears in my eyes.
I watch the local news on our NBC affliate but always changed the channel to see Bob for the national news.
Bob has proven that good guys do finish first. - Reply to this comment
- Bob,
I agree with all of the comments praising your style and approach. I loved the Saturday evening news all the years you did that, and was really, really sad to see you give that one up! Now, what a great treat these last 18 months have been! What a mistake they made in 1981, although your loyalty is impressive. Please stay on in Washington as long as you comfortably can!

- Bob Schieffer was quite simply the best anchor I have seen in all my years. I watch very little television, but believe me, he was so engaging, compassionate, and rational that I will miss him greatly. I will give Ms. Couric a chance, but truthfully, I am concerned about her ever since I heard her refer to a group of older women as "girls". Bob would never have done such a thing.

- Well, Bob Schieffer was superb in his short run. Imagine all the excellence we've missed by having Rather in there instead of Shieffer all these years! My hope would be that CBS will allow Schieffer to do commentaries occasionally during the Couric broadcast. Maybe once a week. Like Eric Severaid(sp?) from many years ago. Schieffer's comments at the end of Face The Nation are a must watch every Sunday. But, alas,
it probably won't happen. Couric's ego will block it.
I've seen some of the commercials promoting Couric and they are insulting. I don't need to be told what the news of the day means. Just report it and let me interpret the meaning. She may just go down like Connie Chung. You can take that female voice in the morning news shows but I'm not sure of the evening. But then maybe it doesn't really matter all that much who fills in the gaps between the drug company commercials! The results will only be known 6 months or a year from now when we compare the commercials then from those now. If it's still just aging baby boomer drug ads then nothing is changed.
It's funny though. I would have thought that John Siegenthaler was a better choice for NBC. And someone like ODonnell would be a better pick for CBS as a female. But it's the star power that rules the day. - Reply to this comment
- I hope Katie is promoting the use of the technique that let her shed 20 pounds over night by the government. The defecit certainly could need the Katie diet!

- Bob Schieffer -
You are truly a talent in your profession. I looked forward to your newscasts because I would really learn about what is going on in the world. You are not just a "talking head" anchor. You asked the questions that I would ask to clarify points made in the different news stories, and I appreciated your wit and humor about the news. I also liked how you would ask the reporters to give their views on what they are reporting. I am sad that CBS decided to go with Katie Couric for the evening news. Although she is an experienced "talk show" person, a serious journalist such as Bob Schieffer should only be delivering the evening news. I will no longer be watching the CBS Evening News come September 5th, 2006. - Reply to this comment
- Sadly, this is the last day I will be watching the CBS Evening News. I find Katie Couric's delivery style too anoying. It is like listening to a first grade teacher talk to their students "Okey, eveyone pull out your weekly reader and lets talk about this terrible thing called terrorism". I prefer a person with a more adult, objective, and authoritative delivery.

- Bob Schieffer, you are the top. I worked to get your egomaniacal predecessor off CBS News and never dreamed that they had a person of your caliber waiting in the wings. Your time came and went all too fast. Because of you I started watching CBS again. Wish you could remain. Will give your replacement a chance. All the best to you.

- I can't imagine what CBS was thinking! Nothing against Katie Couric, but come on! She's a lightweight next to Bob Schieffer! My husband and I had finally found a news anchor we truly respect and looked forward to watching each evening. You've just lost two viewers who had been very loyal for the last 18 months.

- Bob,
I hope you don't mind me addressing you as Bob, but I feel you are a part of my family. When I hear your voice reporting the news....it is...well you have the most soothing, caring voice. I love to hear you report the news. And don't get me started when you laugh at something. I can tell it is deep and real. You are a wonderful journalist and broadcaster and I will miss your soothing voice at 6 pm each evening, but I know Katie will do a fantastic job. Last night when you were so choked up...I begain to weep...Anyway...Best of Luck to you and May God continue to Bless you and your beautiful family! - Reply to this comment
