A common courtesy or respect that any President should have has been lost over the last 40 years. It did not matter who you voted for or what your political orientation. In times of war this respect was unwavering and the country would unite even more. You have seen many presidents and sat thru countless State of the Union addresses. Certainly you have been pushing the envelope of disrespect each time a President was in office that you simple did not like.

I submit that you and thousands of your fellow journalist brethren are a large part of the problem. Talking about his buttonhole and how he pronounces certain words? I think that is what is called a passive-aggressive way to say you don't like this President. We are in a time of war and you show no respect, attack these meaningless idiosyncrasies and pile this "white noise" onto other real issues people may have with our President. He probably isn't your president because you didn't vote for him. It is frustrating to raise chilren and spend Sunday night with dark souls such as youself lurking about the TV. Take an honest look at yourself in the mirror and, when you do, just say "Jackass".

I think the people you didn't want to make mad were your superiors at CBS. Keep up the great work. You could be canned before the next democrat takes office.

Mr. Rooney, when you saw pictures of Americans torturing Iraqis, you said of the explanation that they weren't trained: "Trained in what? To be decent human beings?" "Take away their right to call themselves Americans! That's what I'd do!"

You were kinder to the reckless, seemingly conscienceless individual who caused it all and who favors torture, weren't you? Later on TV you lamented that you didn't know who was advising Bush. And I say to you, "Advising the torture president to do what? Be a decent human being?"

I agree: Take away Bush's right to call himself an American. That's what I'd do.

It's very annoying how you were so tough on those dumb grunts and now are letting the perpetrator of all this go free with the hand-slap of a pronunciation lesson.

I guess you don't want to "make anyone (Bush) mad."

By the way, er, Bush has certainly been told about saying "nuculer." Isn't it abundantly clear that he NEVER listens -- ever? Did he listen to the study group, for example? No, he never listens or learns and that's why he has virtually no knowledge of anything and no expertise. That's why we have torture in secret prisons, thousands dead, our treasury gutted, our name ruined...

Now there's your STORY. Oh, your column has to be cute? Then kindly write about something else!

Abraham Lincoln's second Inaugural Address was after his Gettysburg Address, and was written by President Lincoln.

Andy-

I respect much of your work, your sense of humor and your years of experience. You have always brought a sense of correct perspective to many problems by making light of serious issues. The fact that President's speeches haven't been written by Presidents for decades is to me a shameful side of American politics. I don't care about his pronunciation, or for that matter anyone else's. It is the tenet of things said that I am concerned with, and that will predict and influence the country's future. It is the President's philosophy, conscience and strength that needs to be heard. How many problems and solutions to national and world problems have been influenced by a speechwriter who could spin the words the way they think the President should?

Re: comment posted by "FARTKNOCKER2"... Funny stuff! One could expect nothing less from someone with such an odoriferous user name... If you don't believe that Mr. "I Don't Care What Anybody Says, I Will Do Whatever I Want!" Bush is a dictator, you should look the word up in a dictionary... That is, if you even own one... Here, let me save you the time: "DICTATOR - a person exercising unlimited powers of government; an absolute ruler" Get it now???

How sad, for Andy can complain only about how "W" says new-clear. Dude, look in a mirror sometime and then explain to the world about your well kept eyebrows.

Please note that Ex -President Jimmy Carter, a trained nuclear engineer, always pronounces nuclear the same way President Bush does. It is sort of jargon as I, a nuclear medicine physician occasionally, along with the technologists lapse into that pronunciation.

RIGHT ON, ANDY!!! No one could have said it any better! Mr. Bush couldn't write his own letter to Santa Claus, much less a SPEECH to the Nation... His chronic and STUBBORN use of his word "NUCULAR" is as irritating as nails on a chalkboard! As a world dictator - oops! I mean LEADER - he, of all people, should know how to pronounce the word CORRECTLY... Every time I hear him say "the N word" I get this image of him with his finger poised above the Big Red Button, with no clue as to what he is doing... A man of such ignorance should not have such power...

The one thing I have to disagree with, as far as your own well-written speech is concerned, is your comment about Mrs. Bush not trying to correct him. She has TRIED to do so, with no success. The President was roasted not long ago (Kennedy Center Awards?) and she made a joke about his misuse of the word in front of a room full of people, which was broadcast on nat'l TV (PBS)... SHE was BRILLIANT! Sorry you missed it!

Ainttaken: Very good points. I think anyone born into the lucky sperm club should just automatically be given a Yale MBA and a military deferment - don't make them waste precious horse riding time appearing to earn them.

I see that you have once again made fun of President Bush for mispronouncing the word nuclear. How many times have you made fun of Sens. Kerry and Kennedy for saying "idear" instead of "idea"? You should criticize every mispronounced word or none at all.

When he came to Missouri and gave two speeches, both identical, he kept saying "gooder" instead of "better". I also wondered about the value and quality of a Yale education.
