- I don't have a problem with what they're doing with their charity, per se. But these projects are firmly in the well-established category of bleeding-heart stuff; oh, I'm sorry, noblesse oblige. They also pretty well fit the stereotype of 'women's issues.' I'd like to see them work on problems that are really much tougher than eradicating a killer disease (it's been done with smallpox) or getting disadvantaged kids ready for college. For example, ending unemployment and underemployment among U.S. citizens who already have a college education. What good are Bill Gates' "lots of very well-educated people" if many of these educations are being wasted in the possessors' unemployment or underemployment? Not to mention the abilities of people who don't have a college education; these too can and are being wasted in many cases. Think of the great things all these people could do if we had the secured opportunity to work up to our highest and best abilities. That's a force-multiplier effect the Gates are somewhat egotistically ignoring.

- Bottom line is that it is the Gates's money and they can do whatever they like with it. At least they are trying to do good in the world and make a positive difference.

- I find it totally appauling that the Gates are spending this much money to people in other Countries when I see people here in the USA that truly need help, I just went to Petsmart where people work for minimum wage with no health care and have the most terrible teeth, they have teeth missing and some are black. How can you not help your own people here before looking to other countries.....My answer is she (Linda) really wants recognition, NO SHE DOES WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW....WHY ELSE WOULD SHE LET YOU DO THIS. BECAUSE SHE HAS TO LET YOU KNOW SHE IS DOING SOME GOOD. IT'S EASY TO GET RECOGNITION WHEN SHE IS LOOKING AFTER CHILDREN IN INDIA THAT ARE LOSING BABIES AT BIRTH. (by the way when you asked how many had lost children at birth it was so few and looked very pathetic) THEY ARE A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY AND NEED TO KNOW THAT HAVING CHILDREN IS NOT GOOD IN THE SITUATION THEY ARE IN....WHY ARE THEY HAVING SO MANY CHILDREN....DO THEY NOT KNOW WHAT MAKES A BABY, YES LOTS DIE BECAUSE THAT IS NATURES WAY WE SHOULD NOT INTERFERE WITH IT, THEY SHOULD NOT BE HAVING ALL THESE BABIES IF THEY CANNOT PROVIDING FOR THEM, WHY DO THEY THINK IT'S ALRIGHT TO BRING CHILDREN INTO THE WORLD WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO PROVIDE FOR THEM....IS SHE GOING TO PROVIDE FOR ALL THE BABIES IN THE WORLD THAT ARE BORN TO PEOPLE THAT CAN'T PROVIDE FOR THEM. (if so she shgould start at home there are plenty here) She should make her money work for people in the USA first then help other countries after, oh but that wouldn't carry so much clout with all the other do gooders would it, she has to show that she is doing her part. NO. NO NO SHE IS DOING IT FOR THE PUBLICITY - OR THE TAX BREAKS......THE FACT THAT YOU ARE PANDERING TO HER BY SAYING IT TOOK OVER A YEAR TO GET HER TO GO ON YOUR SHOW BUT NOW SHE IS PROVES SHE IS NOTHING BUT A PERSON THAT HAS TO PROVE SHE IS SPENDING HER MONEY FOR THE POOR TO LOOK GOOD. CRAP CRAP CRAP I AM NOT UNDER ANY IMPRESSION THAT THEY ARE SPENDING THEIR MONEY FOR ANY REAL GOOD. THEY SHOULD SPEND MONEY HERE FOR THE SCHOOLS THAT REALLY REALLY NEED THE HELP AND MEDICAL CARE HERE, LOCAL GOVERNMENTS HERE ARE NOT ABLE TO PROVIDE FOR THEIR POOR AND HAVE HAD TO CUT MILLIONS OF DOLLARS THAT WOULD HELP PEOPLE HAVE SURGERIES TO KEEP THEM ALIVE. I DO NOT BELIEVE THEY ARE REALLY HELPING WITH THEIR MONEY. CHARITY BELONGS AT HOME. ALSO AMERICA'S INFRASTRUCTURE IS IN DISARRAY, I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY ARE NOT SEEING THIS, THEIR HEADS ARE IN THE SAND AND ARE ONLY LOOKING TO MAKE THEMSELVES LOOK GOOD AROUND THE WORLD. SHAME SHAME SHAME ON THEM.
I JUST HEARD BILL GATES SAY THAT EDUCATION IS MOST IMPORTANT.....WHAT ABOUT EDUCATION IN THE USA WHERE WE ARE FAILING WAY BEHIND THE EUROPEANS.
WHAT ABOUT ALL OUR SOLDIERS COMING BACK FROM WARS TO PROTECT THE PEOPLE LIKE THE GATES, THAT ARE SUFFERING WITH NO HELP TO PUT THEIR LIVES BACK TOGETHER AGAIN......

- This is one of the few situations that a CEO actually deserves all he or she can make. This guy and a very few others changed the way the world communicates. The rest of those CEOs that loot the companies they work for thieves. They give themselves huge raises for cooking the books.

- So what's the catch? people like Bill Gates don't just give away that kind of money without some kind of CONTROL over how it is spent. I am sure that he will have a large part in changing the policies toward education in the way HE wants it. Yup. Same with health care and food. I don't see him encouraging organic foods or encouraging natural health care. So I think its safe to assume that he's on the other side of the fence, pushing drugs, GMO, MONSANTO and all that kind of evil stuff.

- My God, how cynical some people have become! What more could this dedicated, socially aware couple do right? Not only have they chosen to give their own wealth away, and dedicated their full-time efforts to personally deciding what the priorities are for distributing it, they have also successfully started and lead a movement to persuade the wealthiest people on earth to do the same. If you just hate capitalism, I guess there is no good answer to what you do with the wealth it produces. If you don't hate capitalism, and I don't, show me a better example of what to do with accumulated wealth.

- It amazes me the amount of negativity out there. Watch the entire segment...PLEASE. I think that there is a good amount of social responsibility that every "billionaire" or "millionaire" should feel. The Gates's HAVE taken an interest in the lives of their fellow American citizens if you listen and don't leave it up to 60 Minutes to be the only source of your awareness. Couple this with what I have learned about them tonight, and I too am an admirer. Take it upon yourselves to find out where the money is going and make well informed and not so much emotional reactions to money going overseas. There are a number of worthy causes that don't need as much money as they need volunteers or media support. It is unfortunate that no matter how much good people try to accomplish, there are always people who think THEY know what is best. How about we all go out and make a considerable amount of our own money and decide to do with it what we deem socially/globally responsible and let the Gates's continue their admirable work abroad as well as at home.

- Thank you Bill and Melinda Gates! The unselfish acts of a few can and will change the lives of millions! What a wonderful blessing you are to these women and children in India! Keep up the fight....I pray more will join you in saving the lives of the impoverished.

- One last thought on the really wild thought that you might actually read this.
It doesn't do good to give however many billions in scholarships if there are no jobs available after they graduate. Without jobs, there is no future. Bring the jobs back. You have taken away pride, industriousness, and independence and replaced it with charity. There is no logic in what you're doing. - Reply to this comment
- Some of these comments just go to show how lazy and ungrateful we as Americans have become. There are diseases that Americans do not have to worry about that are killing millions in other countries.
Do you worry about your children getting polio, dying of hunger, or getting an education? If you do, then maybe you should discontinue your cell phone, cable, and other luxury items so you could do not have to worry about these things. We have the opportunity for work, education, shelter, etc. Stop looking for the $200,000 a year job, swallow your pride and get a job at a Walmart or Target. Both of these companies offer health care.
A mast majority of the people that the Gates Foundation is helping do not have anything. They don't even have the option of everything that you have available.
Why would I give money to healthy, greedy, lazy Americans who do not want to work when there are people that do not even have the option of work?
Until our mentality changes, this country will never get back on track. You don't need the newest IPhone to live, you don't need a brand new car even year, you don't need a $500,000 house to live.
