The canal should stay as it is. Post More warning signs in english and let it go. The Mexican people need to learn to attempt legal passage to america more often than illegal. It is not our job to make the border safer to cross. We need to make it more difficult. Theres an idea. Perhaps the dangerous canal should span the whole border.

Is there any way to extend the American Canal to cover the entire length of the Mexican border and then stock it with, say, pirahnas?

Folks ?

Aren?t there safety laws in place for any American industrial worksite? It would seem that a worksite like the Great American Canal would come under regulations for industrial safety.

We regulate mines, factories and other work locations.

Wouldn?t the laws that regulate safety at the workplace, regulate the canal?

With its safety record exposed now, wouldn?t there be a criminal case against those who administer this worksite?

I Hope I am not the 1st person to post this "Simple solution", but I have not read all other posts to find out. Anyway... why not put ladders on the MEXICO side of the canal every few hundred yards so anyone who tries to cross the canal can still get out of the canal, but only on the MEXICO side?? Death trap problem solved, border still secure!

I feel sorry for the innocent children who are caught up in this situation. People will always try to have a better life and they believe America is it!! IT IS NOT, so many of us are living from paycheck to paycheck and we are the lucky ones. For a so called GREAT NATION there is too much hunger and suffering right in our backyards. It is sad when I see comments such as and I quote "Illegal and old people are killing our nation get rid of them". Only an ignorant person could make a statement like this. We all will get old eventually and if we work and pay our taxes and the government does it's job the right way: then old people will have their social secuirty that they contributed and their pensions. No burden to society here. It is wrong to come into the country illegally, and while I feel empathy for those migrating or trying to migrate illegally for a chance of what they believe to be a better life, I would not do anything to that body of water. I hope the warning signs are in the languages of all those who have lost their lives trying to cross.

It's the canal's fault that these people died. Their kin need to sue the operators of the canal for failing to build a walkway across the canal so people entering this country illegally can walk into it with relative safety.... and La Migra waiting on the other side!
Viva Arizona!!!

I only read the first sentence of this report and as it was a lie, I didn't waste my time reading the rest of it. Obviously, the reporter hasn't read the law or is not smart enough to understand plain English.

To Imagabba: It is affectionately referred to as Anchor Baby, Jackpot Baby or Tourist Baby, but all refer to the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. At its core is the the phrase "subject to the jurisdiction thereof" which is intended to exclude American-born persons from automatic citizenship whose allegiance to the United States was not complete. With illegal aliens who are unlawfully in the United States, their native country has a claim of allegiance on the child. Thus, the completeness of their allegiance to the United States is impaired, which therefore precludes automatic citizenship.

In other words, if their parents are not require to serve in its military or to pay taxes to the US then their citizenship is not complete. And this again is where our country has failed to enforce its own laws. Illegal immigrant babies should not be granted citizenship.

Our current immigration system is neither fair nor just?to citizens of the US, legal workers, nor illegal immigrants living here. Something needs to change.

US citizen are not able to compete economically with illegal workers because there is a substantial cost to doing business legally. In the construction trades specifically, the cost of insurance, worker?s compensation, licenses, taxes, and government fees is equal to a third of the cost of each employee. A company that uses illegal workers (usually ?laundered? through Latinos owned subcontracting businesses or day labor) can therefore bid jobs at two thirds the cost of a legal company. This is not fair to the legal workers or businesses.

Most Latino worker (I do not know who is legal and who is not) are good men that work hard and have dreams for themselves and their families. But, under the current system they are not protected workers. I know of multiple situations where Latinos workers have been injured on the job and medical help has not been obtained. Whether this is fear of legal authority, lack of insurance or less employer safety oversight is unknown. Illegal immigrants work for less pay then Legal workers. The trade in illegal work also pulls down the wages of Legal Latinos. Latinos frequently work longer hours or multiple jobs to make the money necessary to live in the US. In construction this is dangerous. This is not a just situation.

The ?Guest Worker? situation proposed by the last president seemed like one good solution. In this scenario the guess workers?now legal?would make wages and have protections similar to US workers. The cost to hire a guest worker and a native worker would be nearly equal creating a fairer situation.

A second solution is to raise the Mexican economy. Any border with a third world economy on one side and a first world on the other will be hard to secure. However, efforts to equalize the economies on both sides (ex. Canada-US) would be better for all in North America.

Ignoring the problem isn?t working. I welcome all honest attempts to solve the problem.

I think there are 135 bodies of climbers on Mt. Ranier. That doesn't include all the bodies they were able to bring down. We shouldn't allow people to climb mountains because some people die. How many people die because some one runs a red light. We should make all traffic lights 4-way stops so there are no accidents.
I work in home improvement in Atlanta. I hired some illegal Mexicans about 10 years ago for one summer until I realized it was ILLEGAL. Sorry but it just never occured to me at first. I haven't hired them since. I know all kinds of contractors that continue to hire them. If you are building a house, doing home improvement, need a house keeper, yard work, nanny, etc don't hire illegals. Don't support a business that hires them. I like the ones I know. Some that I met still work another contractor that I know. They work hard. The bottom line is they are here illegally. Mexico (since at least 60% of illegals are from there) has lots of natural resources including oil. It should and could be a prosperous nation. Japan has limited natural resources and should be a poor county but it is prosperous. Go figure.
