- What a relief to see your story. I am caught in a hole that I didn't create and it just keeps getting worse. I have done all you shared and it only seemed to make it worse. Since 2009 I tried to list with the major 3 bureau that I had my identity stolen and didn't even get a reply. I not only had my identity stolen in 2009, but had my car stolen. I have not been able to find a full time job since and have had to pick up contract jobs, but lately they have been cut short. I didn't pass a background check when a company asked me about living in AZ. I never have, yet the major 3 had me listed as living in Chandler, AZ.
A person that is now retired FBI found my documents in one of their homes they had rented and the renter skipped. They found my loan application, my USAA bank statements and my TCF bank statements as well as stacks of others. Even with all this I couldn't get anyone to listen. This guy was a confidence man. It took years before people started believing me over him. He was my car salesman at Bloomington Lincoln Mercury in Bloomington MN and I never had been to his home. I had problems with the police, with the credit bureau, etc. I worked in a hospital for 19 years and as a consultant since. If anyone took someone's personal information to their personal home, not only they would be charged, but also the facility. Here nothing happened. To this day this guy continues to threaten me and he is going to take care of me. To others he calls me a crazy old bat, etc. I have fought hard, but he drained me emotionally and financially. My insurance company still pay me for all the damage on the car and I couldn't keep paying to fix it, so I turned it in. Now the bank wants $29,000 for the car and damages done to it. There were days where I couldn't go on and I surely couldn't pick another battle with the major 3. The State of MN charged the salesman with Theft by Swindle then if he paid me back only $5,000 his felony disappeared. Great but the rest of what he did, didn't and I can't seem to do anything about it. I don't even know which way is up any more. I am told I have a strong case against the dealership for their lack of responsibility with this man, knowing that he had priors of Theft by Swindle, forgery's, etc., but then my attorney who was going to do it most pro bono died. I don't have the money to fight it and it slowly is destroying me. I gave up childhood for the military being a TCKid and an Army Brat. I grew up as my only view out my bedroom window was rows and rows of tanks. I supported my father to fight for this country and my mother had been in a camp in Germany. I want to shout I am an American and now being treated like dirt, as if I don't matter. My father fought for their freedom and this is what they do to me and others. How can a business knowingly hire a con, let him use their computers, print records, use temp license cards, plates to set up his con and no one is responsible. They knew what they were hiring. I am the first person to give someone a second chance, but then you need to be responsible to your customers. They did none of that. When I went in to speak with them, they told me to get a subpoena and then they would tell me why he no longer worked there. This was so wrong. Why can't someone help those of us that have gone and still going through this. I get calls for bills no mine or bills I paid. I was called the other day about a bill in 1999 that back then wasn't real and today doesn't make it any more real. I lost my home, two cars, can't get a job over this guy and what he did to me with the help of this Car Dealership. What can't someone help? Where is the USA in all of this? Where is Minnesota in all of this? I had a police officer get on the phone with me, called by this con who yelled at me, told me to shut up and grow up. That I better learn how to get along with this guy and then hung up. Are you kidding me? Where are my rights? I am sharing just a tip of what has happened to me through all of this and as a result of all of this. - Reply to this comment
- I tried to correct errors on my credit report back in the 1980s, when I first learned about them.
They came back to bite me this year.
I am amazed by this story, but not at all surprised.
What does surprise me is that nobody has gone to the lengths necessary to get these companies to start reporting honestly: Class Action Suits.
Why? Or Why not?
This is a problem crying out for that approach to resolve the situation.
Otherwise, nothing will ever be done about it. - Reply to this comment
- I fought a reporting error by American Express for four years. It was only resolved when I took AMEX and the credit agencies, who fully acknowlged they understood the issue but sided with AMEX, to court and won. Amazingly, American Express did not correct the credit report information in compliance with the Judge's order. So the Judge called the AMEX attorney to court and suspended her law license until the problem was corrected. She explained that it was the leadership of the firm who did not comply, not her. The lesson, actually stated by the judge in the hearing, was" "next time go after the CEO of the firm in your complaint".

- After someone intercepted wire transfers to start a new business and then had the bank send them checks to another address without verification, I have lost just about all there is to loose.
I lost that business and a vehicle to repossession. The credit reports issued by the big three for me and my wife were so riddled with disinformation that after 5 years I gave up, destroyed my credit cards and only use a bank because of the paycheck I used to receive. I have been UNABLE or should I say the Big 3 has YET to assist in changing the credit reports or remove anything as your report on Sunday 2/10 advised...
I now pay CASH - or do without!!!
JUST DOING EVERYTHING i CAN NOW TO PRESERVE MY HOME...THANKS EQUIFAX;EXPERIAN;TRANSUNION - Reply to this comment

- Thanks for covering this. I checked mine after this and sure enough....several errors, different results from the different agencies. So for those of that have been paying higher interest rates for less than realistic credit scores, is there any recourse? Any class action lawsuits on this?

- I have a home mortgage and Home equity loan at the same bank. I could not refinance because the home equity division had me down as diseased (instead of my late husband) It took 4 months of hard work to get the credit bureau to change me back to a living person.

- The big thing that you all left out was WHO has jurisdiction over this? Obviously, not the State Attorneys General. Congress? What are they doing about it? Who should be holding the credit reporting agencies accountable? You just left us saying there was a problem.... but not how to fix it. Seems like a big miss for a 60 minutes episode.
