I shutter to think of how much China already knows about us, and how we could blatently give them "permission" to learn more by doing business with us. I would not trust Huawei, especially knowing that Chinese businesses take their commands from the Chinese government. I work for an American manufacturer and attend trade shows; I cannot tell you how often we've had to toss Chinese "spies" out of our booth for fear of them stealing our consepts and marketing them for less (they sideswipe licensors and produce an identical-looking product but skimp on the quality to do so). I believe that this way of doing business is the "modus operandi" for the country in general.

"The president of United Wireless, Craig Mock, ... did business with Huawei because he didn't know of any other American company that made the equipment he needed."
...
"The only U.S. supplier that competes with Huawei is Cisco, and they don't make every component necessary for today's 4G networks."

Wow, now CBS is shilling for communist China!

Cisco is the world leader in telecommunications. They aren't perfect, but at least they are not run by a high-ranking member of the Chinese Red Army. And to say that Cisco cannot supply basic telecom needs is truly ignorant. Mock bought on price like any Walmart hillbilly and is now trying to deflect the criticism.

Any companies in communist China can claim that they are not controlled by the government but they will do what the government tell them what it wants done. Just look at how the government tell Yahoo China to hand over identities of the dissidents. Another example is Baidu (Chinese equivalent to Google) is told to block out all info regarding Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 and Tiananmen Massacre.
The Chinese government strictly controls the internet in China and spies on its citizens with the collusion of companies likes Huawei because these companies have no choice if they want to stay in business.
So, it's not a stretch at all when the Chinese government tell these companies to spy on americans, steal classified info, steal intellectual properties...etc... especially now that they have the means to do it easier with their own equipment. The Chinese will cheat, spy, steal, and rob you blind. So, wake up and don't let them.

I have worked in the telecommunications industry and currently own a computer business.

What your seeing here with Huawei is a witch hunt, pure and simple. I can tell you precisely what started all of this - it is when T-Mobile dropped LG Electronics and substituted Huawei in March for their Mytouch house-branded phones. LG is a South Korean manufacturer and they had only had the Tmobile account since October 2011 - that's a grand total of 5 months before they were dumped. It wounded LG's pride and they are responding with viral planted stories like this.

What I see going on here is Huawei is doing the exact same thing that LC and HTC did when they entered the smartphone market. They are making a superior product to what's currently on the market and selling it for less money.

Tmobile dumped LG because LG's mytouch 4G phone had a slower CPU, smaller lower resolution screen and was more expensive. LG also mandated to Tmobile that Tmobile brand their mytouch phones as "LG mytouch" This is an advertising win for LG.

Huawei doesen't require the branding representation and their mytouches have a bigger and higher resolution screen and faster CPU. They also are very easy to root. The LG phones are a lot of trouble to root.

The US government broke up the AT&T monopoly. Maybe it was a good thing and maybe it was a bad thing.

America cannot be the world's best at everything. We probably can be the world's best at a few things. Basic cell phone service is now far from state of the art and can be had for $5/month if you don't talk very much.

4G networks are about high speed wireless internet at any point in the network. WiFi is about hi-speed wireless internet at a few hotspots. In this town, free WiFi doesn't seem hard to come by--never actually tried to use it.

Who wants 4G and why? I assume hi-speed data transfer uses lots of radio spectrum space.

In general this isn't a democrat or republican issue. It's a dollar issue, borderline treason issue. Used to be we shot people who sold out our country, we just shot them, didn't listen to any lame excuses, just aimed the aught 30 and squeezed it off. done deal.

As an employee of Cisco Systems in San Jose, California but they are designed in this country . Still, we are an American firm, and we are ethical.
=======================================================================
1st of all amurguz,Cisco is a global company and many, many things are designed from offices around the globe, not just San Jose. Also Cisco in the bay area has more green card workers than US citizens, so loyalty become an issue. Over 60% Indian/Chinese green card workers in San Jose, over that.

One thing that troubles me about Cisco is that they sell spying equipment to countries. The brag about selling Russia 60,000 IP cameras so that the Russian government can spy on its' people. They sell China even more than that.

So one thing rules in business and it isn't the red-white-blue, it's the all mighty dollar. Fact and always will be.

wonder if all who have a 401k or similar investments across the nation unknowingly are invested in a chinese company. wonder too how much romney has invested in chinese companies, businesses, knowingly or otherwise.even vehicles made or assembled here in the USA probably aren't made out of 100% made in the USA parts, componets, electronics. so if we buy a vehicle, we unknowingly are supporting companies abroad. how about your computer, hard drives, memory, etc? grandfather says he remembers when so many wanted a global economy and now that it's here, everyone seems to be complaining.

What happened to Lucent Technologies, Motorola, Northern Telecom, and other North American and European companies that provided telecom switching equipment ?
