Mr. Safer believes in psychiatry, which is no more than personal opinion masquerading as science. Mr. Ayers does not sound ill. Is uttering profanity a mental illness too? That is the problem with psychiatry. If a person says or does something that a psychiatrist does not like or does not understand, the psychiatrist declares it a mental illness.

Thankfully, not everyone mocks what they do not know or understand like Mencken. I have a loved one who is on medication for a mental illness. The wonder of seeing someone so tortured by a medical and biological mental illness transform into a productive, loving member of society is so rewarding. Medication is always a last resort and thank goodness we have a varied psychiatric community dedicated to helping people like Mr. Ayers. It's a shame his view was distorted by dramatic, old-fashioned treatment, but today there are so many good medications that help people lead productive lives devoid of the torture of their minds. People like the poster I quoted, who obviously has no personal experience other than an uneducated opinion comprised of total ignorance mock what they cannot see. These doubting Thomases, who try (in vain) to discredit the helpful and growing world of psychiatry do a disservice to those suffering. Although we know they won't go away because like a bad penny, they keep showing up, those of us who have had the wonder of normalcy through counseling and medicine, are enjoying the fruits of their labor.

If people can't "see" a disability, they automatically assume it doesn't exist. Very archaic opinions these people have but they are the true definition of a Doubting Thomas.

Journalists promote this business. Do the drug company advertisements on 60 Minutes have any influence on their perspective? When has 60 Minutes done a feature on discrimination toward persons accused of mental illness? How many persons with disabilities does 60 Minutes or CBS News employ?

I thoroughly enjoyed the airing of mr Ayers and mr Lopez on 60 Minutes tonight. There are humam beings living on the streets of America hose minds are shackled with various types of mental disabilities.

Not everyone will have come from such a potentially brilliant background as Mr ayers, but they all have a story to tell. Each one is deservant of a bed to sleep in at night, at least two hot meals a day, and a place for medical and/or psychological help. A closer look will find U.S. Veterans amongst the people living in these horrible conditions. One of the most important factors for me tonight as a viewer, was the importance of a kind hearted man, Mr Lopez, and what his friendship has meant to Mr Ayers.

The story tonight was one of the best stories I've seen on TV in a long time. These are the types of real human stories that can possibly become American stories, that could possibly change the way America treats it's homeless.

But the Mr Ayers story is only the tip of the iceberg.....what of the other prodigies and former successes roaming the streets who are now mentally ill? How many of these people have been on the streets thanks to the programs dismantling during the Reagan years? Does 60 minutes dare probe further?

Until recently I've been in a band that was endorsed and sponsored by major manufacturers. This year we were supposed to be the support band for a major national act, which included a North American tour as well as the possibility of a tour through Europe and Japan. Unfortunately the founding member of the band is severely bipolar and it recently became too much for him to handle thus resulting in a desolving of the band.

Your story brought me to tears as I can relate to the damages mental health problems can cause.

I just wanted to say that my husband (who is now deceased) dealt with paranoia schizophrenia all of his adult life but was able to function quite well with the right
medication. It does help - it's just finding the right one for each person. I do hope Mr. Ayers can get the help he needs. Wonderful story, an inspiration and thanks to Mr. Lopez for pursuing this.

Mr. Safer should do a little more research on schizophrenia. It is not an "incurable" disease. There is a recovery process that can help paranoid schizophrenics lead a functional life. The more that wrong information is publicized, the longer the stigma of mental illness continues. There is hope for recovery. You owe your viewers an apology.

This is a great story amongst the CONTINUAL PAIN being suffered in the streets of HOMELESS PEOPLE. So many problems are seen daily in AMERICA. The NEW RECESSION adds to the Mental Depression that is taking hold. From wars past and present, to daily stress of joblessness. My mother had this disease and it caused much strife in my early life amongst my father and brothers. She ended up KILLING herself trying to apoligize for the DEMONS in our lives. Thanks for helping !!!
