- mrs_garibald no, that is not the heart of the problem. The heart is corporate greed. Greddy execs that will do anything to earn an extra buck - even sell out and ruin their country. That includes very high, inflated prices for the good they sell, un-ethical and un-lawful business practices. Over paying employees is not that widespread of a problem. You have obviously never worked in a plant enviroment, and working in a plant enviroment has plenty of perils that one is not exposed to while working a nice office job.

=====================
Plant enviroment? Yes my family owns a company. We moved operations to China a few years ago for the advantages. Now if Americans were only willing to work for $3 a day we would move them back but they are stubborn.

China also hires slaves and children. STUBBORN?
I would love to see YOU live on three bucks a day.
You need more to live in a cardboard box. It''s nice
to see somebody brag about hiring slave labor while
sending US jobs abroad. Did you know that you are
supporting a COMMUNIST run operation? Way to go. - Reply to this comment
- I came to this site because I was disturbed by the fact that Leslie apparently believes that buying American recycled steel by federal mandate is a "protectionist" policy. I am disturbed that people
who ridicule Americans for not being happy with a pay cut. Nobody would be happy with one. The Chinese have laws against buying OUR steel. What is wrong with investing in US ingenuity? It''s how we got a middle class to begin. We need to get BACK to buying American. We are going to become just another third world nation not a leader if we don''t. - Reply to this comment
- behemoth_unt: Why would you be mad about workers making 89,000 now 50,000. Nucor did not close anything and they still have jobs. 50,000 these days is pretty good that being said ABC did a story children of the mountains in one case an 18 year old decided to follow his father into coal mining. His start pay is 60,000 and the mines owner has one of the best rateings in people and safety.

- Could "Buy American" Rule Spark Trade War?
When times are good Americans should exercise their freedoms and buy whatever they want. When times are bad and American Business needs help or a boost "Buy American" should be a no-brainer, Americans should not need to be told to buy American! With that said there is an even bigger problem many Americans are slow to grasp, Americans don''t just talk to each other in the media anymore like we did in the past in the printed press, in Magazines or Newspapers, when Americans talk to each other now the whole World is listening thanks to the Internet and it has an instant impact! The Internet shrunk the World, everyone is listening, when the American Press suggests "Buy American" the whole World hears that, of course there will be repercussions, we can''t say that! - Reply to this comment
- When a steel workers are crying that they have "endured" a 50% pay decrease, going from $89,000/year to $45,000/year it makes me want to say boo-hoo...call the waaahhh-mbulance. I mean what sort of training does it take to work there. Get a grip people !!! You should be thanking the sweet baby jesus that you have a job !!! So now when all this money comes in from the govenment bailout, the ''buy american'' clause in it will get taken advantage of by these companies who will raise their prices and gouge the tax-payers through predatory business practices. This newspiece made me sick to my stomach.

- The problem is not Buying American, but Americans and American Companies are rewarded for failure.
- American car companies are failing because they make cars that nobody wants to drive and now wants a bailout.
- Companies like Nucor made tons of money for the last few years thanks to the rising price of steel, built too much capacity for steel now has to contract, is begging US to buy more US steel.
- Those so called wall street wizards drove the financial institutions to the ground and got a bailout.
- Women like Nadya Suleman and other women like her who will probably never have a job in their lifetimes having poor quality kids while bilking our taxpayer money.
If a company is going to fail because of irresponsibility, let them fail. Another smaller more responsible company will be more than happy to take their place.
If a person thinks that he/she wants bilk our tax dollars by having more kids out of wedlock, don''t give them money, take their kids, and let them starve. So he/she won''t go down that path. That''s the problem with America''s welfare state. - Reply to this comment
- Unbelievable... Dan Dameeko (sp?) rails away against free trade, saying it just doesn''t work, and then propounds the benefits to be had in a buy American clause within the bailout package and then, almost in the same sentence, confesses that it was Chineese consumption of American steel that gave the American steel industry it''s best few years in decades?
Who is this guy and how did such a short-sighted, ignorant man become a CEO of anything?
Worse still it''s that same short-sighted and supremely selfish mentality that created subprime and dragged the entire world into the finacial crisis... and now this Dan Dameeko would turn his back on that responsibility as well as the billions of people around the world who would save his company?
And America still doesn''t understand why it is scorned so much throughout the rest of the world. God help you all, because you certainly don''t seem to want to help yourselves...

- Good report. You could have made a connection between that the American company used recycled materials whereas China uses raw materials that are mined in Australia using caterpillar equipment. In the report, 75% of Caterpillar equipment is sold out of country for large scale mining operations. The American company is a great example of the future.
