- Ms. Stahl only touched the tip of the iceberg when she glossed over the dumping of steel in America by its foreign competitors. It happened back in the early ''80s (under Reagan), with Japan dumping steel for about the cost of the scrap metal, delivered (the rest of the cost was covered by the Japanese gov''t). A lot of steel companies went bust because OUR government wouldn''t do anything to protect OUR people''s jobs.
And another thing she glossed over was the bankruptcies of the steel companies, where the retirement benefits were dropped by the companies: they were dumped on the US taxpayer. - Reply to this comment
- Ms. Stahl should not report if she does not have a full understanding of the facts.

- We''re part of a global economy, and the capitalist ethic is: if it can be made more efficiently somewhere else, then eventually it will be. The only thing we do by putting up trade barriers is ensure that the COST of our inefficiency is borne by another American product (like having to use inefficiently produced American steel in American cars reduces their ability to be bought overseas: we end up paying for it anyway in reduced car sales). Its simply cheaper to produce coconuts in the Philippines.
The purpose of trade barriers is not to permanently deny the reality that it may be cheaper to produce something overseas, or the reality that we''re part of a global economy (trust me: the amount of America owned by foreigners, thanks to our trade imbalance, makes that latter fantasy impossible to hold for long).
The purpose of trade barriers is to SLOW the pace of change in affected industries so that ordinary human beings can figure out what''s going on and devise a strategy to that change. It''s not the change thats bad; its the rapid change. Its the difference between rolling downhill and falling off a cliff: the latter will kill ya. Activist government can''t stop change, it can only slow it. And thats what we should be seeking. - Reply to this comment

I beg to differ with you, John Deere in the U.S. and Komatsu in Japan. Most american contractors are buying or leasing Komatsu in my area. Just like the American people buying Japanese cars. - Reply to this comment

- Yep. Buy American as a government policy could spark a trade war. I have a better way. Don''t put it in the bill and let Americans decide for themselves. We just bought a Ford Fusion instead of a Honda or Toyota.

- NEVER APOLOGIZE for self-preservation! These liberal news programs would love to have all Americans programmed to take food out of the mouths of our children to give to China and the Global community--because that is exactly what they ask us to do with Globalism! You want your job back? Go to China and India to get it. Vote your politicians out of office! The working-class American has been sold into poverty. This is only the beginning of our sorrows!

- I would rather my tax money went to steel workers in America, and have the other nations retaliate, than to see it go over to China.
It''s bad enough that we have borrowed money from these countries and now have to pay interest for years! - Reply to this comment
