- It?s frustrating to hear how wonderful red wine is for our health, yet I rarely see anything mentioned about plain grapes. Since resveratrol is found in the skins, it seems logical that grapes would be beneficial for the same reasons. But the issue never seems to be addressed in any articles I?ve read. So I googled it. One article I found discussed work done by John Pezzuto of the Illinois College of Pharmacy in Chicago and other scientists and was reported in the US journal Science. They found high quantities of resveratrol in grapes and fresh grape skin, and up to three milligrams per litre in red wine. But, says Dr. Pegzuto, ?I am not, for the time being, recommending chemotherapy by the claret glass or a prophylactic pinot noir. Alcohol is dangerous in other ways. Grapes and grape juices would be a healthier choice. The good news is that we have things in wine and grape products that can possibly prevent cancer. The other side of the coin is that there tends to be a positive correlation between cancer and alcohol - with breast cancer, for example. So at best what we have here is some kind of neutralising effect."

- "...Why are they working so hard to synthesize Reversatrol, when extracts of the actual natural compound already exist?" Posted by Pharma_getting_Phatter
So you can get the benefits of it without at least one dangerous side effect of the natural substance, drunk driving. - Reply to this comment
- The planet is already over populated. I don't know how this earth will support all of these people. I guess we will just have to kill off a bunch of young people with more wars.

- Mr. Safer,
You did journalism a disservice by failing to ask one question of these wunderkinds:
Why are they working so hard to synthesize Reversatrol, when extracts of the actual natural compound already exist? - Reply to this comment
- Dear 60 Minutes:
I have now watched your episode on Resveratrol twice. Both times I have been disgusted and deeply saddened by the horror of keeping monkeys in small cages in research labs for most of their lives just to prove what commonsense and medical knowledge has already told us. If one overeats and eats "bad" foods one gets fat and unhealthy. Society doesn't need a miracle pill, we need to come to terms with our eating and exercise habits (or lack thereof). The research being undertaken on these poor creatures who are victims of human vanity and greed is a perfect example of medical research gone wrong. Why don't you consider doing a program with some moral value on this issue that looks, for example, at the booming trade of supplying and using animals for unnecessary research and the companies who engage in it. You could start with the New Iberia Research Center in Louisiana and talking to such organizations as the Humane Society, which is working to end horrific conditions.
Thank you for your time.

- While resveratrol is so new, we are relying on a lot of personal experiences with resveratrol supplements. As this 60 Minutes report said, there are moves to try to make a more potent version of resveratol as headed by Dr SInclair's team. In the meantime it's interesting to note that the Japanese have been using resveratol for a while now for its healing effects, with naturally occuring resveratrol. What I like to do is look at the research. This page has a list of the latest resveratrol research studies: http://www.resveratrolguide.org/resveratrol-research/
In fact many people are surprised that Dr Sinclair has been able to 'fast track' his research on human studies and in cancer patients. I suppose this is a new era in looking at what human research is trying to achieve and how fast we want answers. As with all new supplements, I don't know if we're going to get proof in our lifetime, but in the meantime, just like grape seed extract was when it became popular 7-10 years ago, it looks like we're all going to make our own choices. - Reply to this comment

- I have known for a while since I was in highschool
that wine-red is very healthful for you. The French
people grow up on it. Watered down for children.
They eat a very fattening diet and do not get fat.
That is because of the food they eat also. When I
nursed my son I red The Le Leche book which reccomends
drinking a small amount of red wine to relax while
breast feeding, Enough about what I already know.
I also eat only 1 meal a day if that. Sometimes I
do not have hunger at all. I am the perfect couch
potatoe and only weigh 120lbs. I do very little
movement through my day. I enjoy sitting and
watching my T.V. all day. I am in perfect health
according to the medical community. I hope this
reseach comes through to help us age gracfully.
I have lots of energy when I want to. I wish others
would prescribe to hunger. You lose the desire to
eat. I do drink lots of water all day. On occasion
I will get a bottle of red wine. - Reply to this comment
- I started taking Resveratrol Grape Extract (60 mg) capsules one year ago. I notice most of the comments here are from people who are marketing this extract. I''m an 80 yr old single woman, 5'', and weigh 105 lb. I always stop eating before I get "full" and eat only when I feel really hungry. It was neat to have my health program validated on your 60 minutes program.
My health is great and I continued to work until this year. People say I look and act much younger than I am and I see no reason why that won''t continue. I feel sure taking Resveratrol has helped keep me younger and healthy. Truly appreciated your program.

- In your Jan 25th segment of 60 minutes you covered the use of resveratrol for possibly extending our golden years. It seems to be available already. Should we consider buying and taking it now?

- wake up america. how long will it take for americans to realize that we don''t have to experiment on animals (rhesus monkeys caged for 20 years or more) for the obvious conclusions about good health: herbs, supplements, organic foods and wellness activities promote and support long life! The pharmaceutical companies and medicine businesses are way out of control. Five years to see if this anti aging pill will be effective? wake up america. Support natural health, not cruelty to animals.

- Dear Morley,
Shame on you for your unabashed infomercial on behalf of the pharmaceutical industry. Not hard to find the connection given Big Pharma is your main sponsor (Flomax, Viagra). It is a pity that a senior journalist of your standing would yield to the pressure to publish this nonsense.
No Morley, there is "No Pill for Every Ill" as your sponsors would have us believe. And there never will be.
PS. There is no Santa Claus either. - Reply to this comment
- Amazing story. Everyone wants to live longer and healthier. This new compound holds great promise but that last line that the company that developed this has been bought by Glaxo, was a slap in the face. So much for the promise of better health for all of us. Only the rich will be able to afford it.
Some how we have to throttle drug companies and their henchmen, insurance companies. - Reply to this comment
- There is already a GREAT resveratrol product available on the market. The product is called GENESIS and has the health benefits of Resveratrol equivalent to 1 bottle of Red Wine plus 1 Pomegranate in each 1 ounce of Genesis. I have personal testimony as I am a Type 1 diabetic. I have met people with incredible results from all walks of life. See for yourself at www.takegenesis.com
