Anyone else getting the feeling that our government is run from within the Pentagon, and not vice versa?

Mullen and Obama only share one belief concerning the military; the need to spend lots and lots of money on it.

I have seen a lot of these interviews with the top military brass since we got into the Iraq/Afghanistan mess. This was one of the few where I felt that this officer was not just spouting propaganda fed by the Bushleviks. He seemed somewhat more forthcoming and now maybe the military commanders can knowing that demotion is not one word of dissent means an early retirement.

And while I am all for getting out of Iraq as fast as possible, I fear that once we leave it the place will tear itself apart. The admiral seemed more positive than I have ever heard, but I cannot imagine it will be pretty or easy.

I just wondered if 60 minutes will be able to give us the cost in lives these wars have caused ? Also will 60 minutes be willing to get a dollar amount ? I''m a honorably dischrged vet, & I''m curious to know if any of you feel that the cost these wars have crippled the US, thus accomplishing much more than anyone expected ?

The admiral can press 245 lbs. with rubber bands attached. (I suspect I can 720). and we are supposed to believe this guy to advise the next President? Give me a break!

Wow, another 60,000 troops!

Just think of all the innocent women and children, and hundreds more of our brave sons and daughters in uniform, who''''ll be slaughtered in this war terrorizing the U.S. Treasury!

Go Halliburton Go.

We have a war against terrorists to win. If we don''t do it now, we will be fighting a world war in ten or twenty years. Losses in a world war would exceed anything we can imagine. If like WWII, millions of Americans would be called up to serve in the military. And most of those guys did not have a choice. They were drafted.

I respect Admiral Mullen for his candor and leadership but I know first hand what the US military has gone through these last 7 years. Many soldiers are on their fourth combat tour in Iraq or Afghanistan. There are only 500,000 some enlisted soldiers in the military. The Army has about 30 combat brigades in its 10 Division force. The equipment of these infantry brigades are all used up from trucks, to helicopters, to everything else you can think of used by a rifle company. The US Army, Marine Corps, Guard, and Reserves have been driven into the ground. We must spend at least $100 billion just to reset our active duty ground combat units. All of the Guard''s equipment has to be bought new. There is little left to salvage after seven years of constant warfare. Our budget deficit is $1.2 trillion for fiscal 2009. How are we going to pay for all of this and still find money to deploy 30,000 troops to Afghanistan? We are losing our superpower status to bankruptcy just like Bin Laden planned it.
