- What a bunch of anti-Arab freaks, I swear. The Saudis said on the show that they were investing in solar energy because they want to export it and that they''re trying to come up with a "greener" type of oil so it won''t pollute as much.
That means they understand that oil contributes to world pollution and are trying to make it less so.
And despite everything those Israeli animals are doing to their Palestinian brethrens Saudi Arabia continues the flow of oil.
The only exception was in 1974 but it hasn''t happened again regardless of how horrific the Israelis treat their entire neighborhood, including Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Iraq, and no matter how much the Arab street begs the Saudis to stop the flow because of it.
If anything, oil has been a very good thing for the gulf countries to force them to open up and not be so restrictive internally.
I truly don''t understand what is there to complain about. - Reply to this comment
- It was a surprisingly moronic interview. Pure propaganda play for the Saudis -- no wonder they consider Americans stupid. But as long as we continue to buy their oil, they''ll tolerate us. Frankly I was shocked at the level of the questions and the questions which weren''t asked, such as, considering the fact that the country is a theocracy, and opposed to Western values, what are the problems caused internally by the oil industry? What is the sense of responsibility the Saudi''s feel towards dealing with the problems caused by burning oil, i.e., pollution and global warming? Do they have any sense of loyalty to their most loyal customer, namely the US, or is it all about the money and their bottom line?
I agree also with the comments pointing out the lack of serious objectivity concerning the claims made about the oil supply.
Maybe given the oppressive mentality of the culture, perhaps what we got was the best Lesley Stahl could do, so she played the fool, and we get to read between the lines... - Reply to this comment
- energy independence NOW, NOW, NOW.
Solar power NOW, NOW, NOW
Let them eat sand.
But like typical humans / Americans, now that the price is down, we will re-embrace 8mpg SUVS to look cool, and be cowboy macho.
Then when $4 gallon gasoline comes around again, the panic will come with it, as will the new desire for energy independence.
We are collectively so very stupid. - Reply to this comment
- I''m amazed at the wishful thinking on this thread. I mean, this is 2008 and if we haven''t found an alternative to oil by now then when will we?
When, for crying out loud?!
Anything that has been developed at best compliments the use of oil, and if used by itself it simply doesn''t have the milage oil has. They''re just not as cost-effective as oil is.
People who argue for alternatives to oil are as idealistic and naive as people who think the world would be a better place if everyone were vegetarian.
Wanna feel safer about the supply of oil in the future? Then let''s make friends with the Arabs instead of having those neanderthals in Israel poking them like caged lions. - Reply to this comment
- This edition of 60 Minutes is a prime example of how poorly the mainstream media is serving the American public. They let the Saudis ramble on about their "reserves" which cannot be confirmed by anyone and then the rest of the edition is all about the price of gasoline. As another poster noted, the list of things we get from oil is almost endless. And we will sorely miss it when it becomes short in supply, which will occur very soon. Anyone who thinks we will be able to make plastics, pharmacueticals, fertilizers, motor oil and a host of other daily necessities from solar or wind farms is going to be greatly dissapointed.

- She starts with what she thinks is: the "good" news.
I was very very glad when the price of oil rose and so did gas.
These # auto companies brainwashed our country and the world into believing that everyone needed 1,2 or more of their wares.
The result has been unregulated use so that noe we are faced with over congestion on our roads and streets, eternal noise and exhust and pollution.
This love affair with the automobile must come to a halt.
We don''t have decent transit, or for that matter, fabulous public transit because these companies lobbied to get rid of it in favor of their product,
Theuy have created weapons of mass destruction used 24/7 right here in America. Americams kill themselves and each other 48,000 times a year on the roads.
They cost us trillions to support.A mile of roads averages a million dollars. Add on road maintenance, street cleaning and clearing, hospital care, coroners, court cases, oil spills, congestion and pollution costs, etc we are into trillions, maybe over the years Zillions in spending.
The alternatives are out there and right here in our own country. USE THEM!
I can''t even cross the street on a X-walk without having my life threatened. I long for snow storms to have a bit of piece and quiet before the snow blowers get out. - Reply to this comment
- It should be pointed out that we use oil for a lot more than just gasoline. Look around the room you are in right now. More than likley 50% of the "Things" in the room are made from oil products. It is insane to think we can ever stop using oil and the products made from same. Plastics are made from oil. How many things we use everyday have plastics in them? Fertilzers, packing and packaging materials are made from oil. and the list goes on and on. Why is it never discussed in these stories on CBS or any other network?

- I watched this yesterday and I think this was a stunt by the Saudi group to win back our confidence showing they are drilling for more oil. They pay $2 to produce, but want $55. I was amazed by all the money they are spending on the technology (advanced stuff) and thinking at the same time, this is the US tax payer''s money supporting this country. I say we need to get rid of them. They claim to be building an engine of their own to help with gas consumption, but I do not believe it. Why wouldn''t they help the auto companies build a new engine (not just the big 3 but all of them)? They are like cigarette companies, they would not of let 60 minutes in unless they thought they had something to gain.

- Leslie Stahl is so ignorant of the oil/refining business, it is frightening. Does she not realize the thousands of american business that feed the refineries and drilling companies-worldwide? Engineering companies, manufactures of towers, heat exchangers, boilers, air coolers,piping,heaters,etc.--employing millions of American workers with jobs that pay way above avg. and provide health benefits-- (with the price dropping, my 2009 backlog has been cut in half just in the last 3 weeks). The price needs to stay up enough so we don''t go out of business yet moderate to provide affordable energy.Everybody is so concerned about bailing out the auto guys but nobody realizes the small and medium business that furnish equiptment/services to big oil impact almost every state economy. If this industry falters, there won''t be enough money to save the economy. Before she whines about "price of gas" to the Saudi CEO,maybe she needs to educate herself about the quiet side of America that constantly provides good paying jobs, still competes globally sucessfully, pays in huge taxes, and provides health and retirement benefits and fuels local economies.

- In my view the most important task for this country that would make this country powerful and independent again is to make ourselves un-dependent upon other nations for our energy and especially hostile nations. We should find safe and enviormentally safe ways to tap our resources whether in Alaska or wherever they are able to be accessed while finding an alternative fuel. The time is now and if we don''t start now we''ll end up in war over oil or be blackmailed by Islamic countries and Dictatorships like Chavez''s.

- Saddam accused Saudi Arabia of Horizontal Drill as a pretext for invading Kuwait. At the time I believe it was explained to be slant drilling which is not as new as horizontal drilling and the Saudi''s denied all.

- So What??? Are we stupid enough to think that just because they developing this new process that we won''t still be sending most of wealth of this country to the middle east? We must develop new forms of energy so that our country can exist independently of this oil addiction....no matter how cheap oil is NOW!It''s only a trap being set that the US has fallen into before. These oil producing countries have become rich from this addiction. WE must take steps to end it. We don''t produce anything in this country any more except debt. The industries that would be started as a result of new energy, would help our country economically. Stop the addiction NOW..

- I believe the Saudi officials pulled the wool over Ms Stahls eyes. It is in the interest of the Saudi kingdom to overstate it''s oil reserves as it has done year after year, over and over again. With no outside verification they continue to do so and Ms Stahl bought it all, hook, line and sinker. Since no one outside of the Saudi system was interviewed for an alternate opinion, Ms Stahl''s segment was not worthy of a major news-gathering organization such as CBS News. I believe that the world is far short on untapped oil reserves and this will become manifest very soon.

- I thought it was disappointing that the reporter picked on the Saudis alone for preserving the fossil fuel industry.
Afterall, who''se profiting from building those huge production lines? Who continues to develop the Saudi''s infrastructure? It''s companies like Haliburton...with other U.S.-backed industries. Oh, and throw the the bin Laden family, in the mix too. The Cheneys (haliburton) and Bushes don''t want to see the end of Saudi oil dominance either. The contracts are too massive.
As for that propaganda hit on Iran-- saying it wanted higher oil prices so it could support terrorists and its nuclear ambitions-- that was rubbish. Virtually all of Iran''s oil money is going toward funding it tattered economy... . While Iran does provide Hamas with some funding, Leslie''s report failed to mention that the Saudis backed the 9/11 terrorists leading to the killing of 3,000 people in NYC. Where was that mentioned. NO.
But hey, lets just make Iran look like the bad guys ALONE with Humas guns blazing. (Thanks Leslie for leaving the saudi-sponsored killers out of the article-- good balance).
But them again, Iran is different nowadays. Afterall, Iran frightens New York''s pro-Likud community-- so leave that Hamas clip in Leslie. Well done. - Reply to this comment
- It is the very matter of our continued sovereignty that we MUST develope alternative fuel and oil sources.
It is also at the very heart of our national security interest to develope alternative fuel and oil sources, because we are simply funding the terrorist and their sympathizers by buying oil from the middle east and Venezuala. - Reply to this comment
