I don not believe that Sherwood, OR police department qualifies in the "BIG BUSINESS" category, this man is just looking for a quick buck. One of the Army Values is selfless service... something a police officer (Police Chief) should also be familiar with!!!

This is an important story because I do not have an Ounce of sympathy for businesses in this situation. Why shouldnt businesses take some of the burden of war when everyday citizens do it during this ''time of war''? It slays me that big business claims to be pro American and very pro-Republican. Then Republicans take us to war and the big contributors complain it costs too much and they need tax breaks? FOLLOW THE LAW!

In pro team sports, there''s more than one person for every position. Football quarterbacks, for example. Hiring a Guard or Reservist could be organized as a roster of more than one person for each job. OK, musical chairs in some cases. The additional people could be available to more than 1 employer for the same job; e.g. truck driver. Many Americans have been unemployed way too long; being put in a job on a temporary basis is better than being unemployed way longer.

Why is it in all the economics there is no mention of the amount the reservists have received over the years for being signed up and spending some weekends training? Perhaps the company''s should take that into account.

CBS, thank you for taking the time to bring this issue to the forefront. I had the same experience with the federal government. I was in the Public Health Services Commissioned Corp, an organization of the federal government. Public Health received better benefits than any DOD organization and receives identical benefits plus more. They only have to deploy two weeks and have only been deployed twice in the last 20 years. The human resource representative gave me 1/4 credit for the time I was activated because I was an enlisted (noncommissioned officer) at the time. Although I advised and provided acceptable regulation that list it as a violation--- it was never changed. As a matter of face, they created bogus documentation and claims (did not provide me a copy - another violation) and told me it was a mistake for them to accept me because I WAS "ONLY AN ENLISTED MEMBER." Therefore, the reserve has hindered my career because most companies and organizations do not respect reservists and National Guard members. From my experience, the federal government has a double standard. Hopefully the next administration will show some appreciation to the military. They should also have GAO complete an investigation of the Public Health Services and all federal government that violates military members. Support the troop %u2013 totally has not happen.

As fraught with peril as the task of interviewing may be, WHY must people like 60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl be so rude as to interrupt a government official, assistant Secretary of Defense Thomas Hall, in mid-sentence. I hope that neither my children nor I are ever so inconsiderate as she is. I personally support our troops in every way within my purview to allow ex-service personnel to resume normal life, but I am ashamed to be in the same generation as Lesley Stahl. We need to be more considerate of others. Please relay to Ms. Stahl my disgust with her behavior.

I am PROUD to say that my husband is an employee of Con-way frieght in Dracut,MA.
All employers of Active Military members should take notice of Dave Miller and Con-way! Stand up and take pride in the Men and Women who serve in in Military to keep us safe. Be proud of your employees who serve!
The companies who keep the employees'' jobs safe should be rewarded and given a tax break for those who have to leave their position for the military.

The man seeking 1 million dollars should be ashamed, that is a clear abuse of the law, that is there to protect soldiers. His abuse because he doenst like having a new boss is unreal. Many soldiers have served and are simply happy to come HOME. What a worthless person he should be ashamed to call himself a soldier.

Hey Outwest and Family,a change in reporting structure in this case was wrong. What the City of Sherwood did WAS against the law. Period.
Federal law, specifically, 38 U.S.C. 4301-4333 (The Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994) allows returning reservists the right to come back to their job with the same chance of promotion as they did when they left. The hiring in of a public safety director without allowing Chief Middleton to interview or to be a candidate for the position was against the law. Furthermore, the city did show intent to demote the Chief when they initially asked him to sign a new contract in the Spring of 2007 to take the title as Deputy Chief. When the Chief refused, the position of the Director of Public Safety was "created." A public safety director for a small town in Oregon, without its own fire department, is certainly out of the ordinary and further questions the true motives for creating this position.

I really believe that ''family 62'' is the only one that has posted a comment worth reading. So thank you for that. The freedom of speech is a right that every American has, and its almost unfortunate that EVERY American has that right after reading these comments. Whether you like our Commander in Chief or not, he is our Commander in Chief so at least respect he is in that position. So maybe for once in your liberal democrat pretend "perfect world" lives you should try to support your country and its leader instead of put it down and make the Great United States look like dumb **s**. Obama is not going to "save" anyone ''pythoncharly''.
I don''t try to persuade anyones political views ever, but when you make statements that you can not back up is when I start to care. Not much... but I still care.
As far as McCain goes, I truely do believe he is running for presidency because he wants the ultimate best for the country. He is not in it for fame or to look good like some come across to be doing. He is in it to be THE Commander in Chief.

And then the article... Middleton was not a good example for the article because in his case there must have been a structure change. Every Reservist and Guardsmen should absolutley be guaranteed there same position when they return from deployment no matter what the company.

Why do you all have no respect for our Commander in Chief? People are taking this "freedom to speech" a little too far these days.
Our military has fought for all of your rights to even post your comments. Have some respect. In some other Nations you''d be killed if you tried to voice your opinion.
John McCain has served our country and was beaten and in solitary confinement for 5 1/2 years. Just try to imagine that for 5 minutes. The fact that you put down anyone in the military is unAmerican. Shame on you. He is still continuing to serve America...even after all that he suffered.
As for Bill Middleton in Sherwood Oregon....a reporting structure change is not a loss of a job. Get over your ego. There is ALWAYS 2 sides of a story people.

Think, this is the only reason to continue the conflicts in the middle east. What would happen to our economy with our unemployment rate if the troops come home unemployed and looking for jobs.

Someone said recently that the difference between McCain and Bush is that Bush was a much better pilot. What does that say about McCain? Imagine being beaten at anything by a chronic failing moron neer-do-well like George W. Bush.

Oh%u2026the horror%u2026.

Well someone said that the only difference between an Obama presidency and a Bush presidency is the (D) because Obama is the Democrat version of Bush. It''s been said the $300 million in donations came from "anonymous" per the Obama campaign. That, who knows how many, millions of dollars have come from stolen identities and or outside illegal contributions.

Couple Obama''s 97% vote the party line to a 60% plus Democrat congress and we are back to the one party rule of steal as much as you can. which will then swing even farther to the right. It''s called a destructive oscillation and if not dampened will lead to civil war. Eisenhouer said it best when asked why he was in the middle of the road he said The left and the right (of the road) are where the gutters are."

That''s what I fight for, the middle of the road.
