the russians couldn''t defeat the taliban and the US cannot defeat them either.

the US trained and armed them to fight the russians and they are very good at that stle of warfare. the terrain is devastating on soldiers and full of hiding places.

at least the american people are beginning to see what a con job bush and cheney have pulled upon you.

remember the victory naval ship speech?

their administration was a con from the start with it''s connections with iraq and WMD scare of mushroom clouds. and to beat it all it''s candidate should never have been allowed to run for president, but should have been indicted for insider trading and wasn''t.

america will lick it''s wounds and pull out just like the russians did. it''s just how many people suffer and die before it happens?

Dubya will be remembered for starting two wars and in a total of 13+ years of fighting between the two, couldn''t win either one.

That alone is a disgrace in and of itself.

Couple that with the massive debt he''s saddled us and future generations with in these two debacles and it becomes down right despicable.

send bush to jail, for lying to congress, breaking international laws, murder of civilians, too busy clearing brush in crawford that he doesnt have time to do his job, not protecting us from 9-11. There is no statute of limitations on murder. All of those guys will be liable for prosecution for the rest of their lives. Murder, torture, willful negligence. Once the economy gets really bad next year, which it will, and we realize Afghanistan has turned into another quagmire, people will want to put Bush''s head on a stick. Our country, its reputation around the world, and our economy and way of life will NEVER be the same. All on Bush''s watch.

the russians are laughing their as.se.s off. When they were in Afghanistan, we helped out by giving the taliban and alqueda millions of dollars worth of heat seeking missiles to shoot down russian aircraft. Now the tables are turned, and we are in the exact same place that the soviets were in during the 1980''s. What next? Look for soviet and chinese heat seeking missiles to show up in the hands of the taliban. It would be comedic, if our soldiers werent getting killed because of Bush''s monumental screwup. The Bush name will go down in history, synonymous for arragance, foolhardness, stupidity, lack of planning, lack of thinking in a leader. Bush sunk us. Everything is ruined.

And WHY is it "fighting in a hornet''s nest"?? BECAUSE THE AFGHAN "MEN" ARE TOO BALLLESS TO DEFEND THEIR OWN COUNTRY!

lolll...if you had ever served offshore, you would know that the arrival of American forces causes instant industries to spring up to accomodate and support those forces.

"Capitalism" itself works to prevent any effort to eliminate the role American forces serve...if we/they go home, lots of people lose lots of money instantly wherever and whenever we leave.

Look around, even here in America...money buys votes and governments - and serves as a powerful deterrent to military self-sufficiency in those foreign nations with which we become entangled.

Fight, and risk your ballz...or not fight, and get rich...well, you know what OUR chickenhawks always choose at the personal level.

we were so busy sending Iraq back to the stoneage, fighting enemies that WE created. During that time we completely lost sight of the real enemy, AlQueda, Taliban, Osama BinLaden. Bush gave us his word that he would go after these people, but he did not. Nothing he says can be trusted or believed. He was more interested in Iraq. Now we have a big big problem. These guys are tough.

I am so angry!!! We had these guys beat. This is the result of Bush''s arrogance. Now we got Vietnam II. This is exactly how the soviets were beat. Hands tied behind our back. The enemy has sanctuary in cambodia...whoops I mean Pakistan. Now we will be in Afghanistan for at least 10 years and we will lose thousands. We have a good chance of going down like the soviets. Screw you Bush, you are the WORST president in history of the US!!

One thing the comments make evident:

The lies, memory lapses, and wanton disregard for the opinions of the American people and their military leadership that characterize this Administration will impact the American people and their military and complicate the jobs of U.S. Presidents for decades to come.

I''ve been on this ride before. It was called Vietnam. People condemned the soldiers as they came home and eventually we realized how wrong that was.

Point 1: Afghanistan did not attack us. We entered Afghanistan because its ruling government the Taliban would not turn Bin Laden over to our custody. We had to depose the Taliban to get at Bin Laden who was in the process of evacuating to Pakistan. In the mountains we nearly had him, till a politician named Bush decided to invade Iran and take over than government, on the pretext Saddam Hussein was another Bin Laden.

Point 2: People will always argue over whether one military conflict or another was necessary. But we can''t forget the sacrifices of the soldiers. Abe Lincoln left us words of wisdom at Gettysburg:

"The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here..." "...The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated [this groung] far beyond our poor power to add or detract."

Never call a soldier a fool for laying down his/her life for one''s country without question. The "without question" part is how a nation survives.

Taliban "surge" funded by middle class paying extra for fuel -Bush" surge "paid for by middle class taxes-both seem to have some success-the war against the middle class is being won by BOTH though.

Who are we fighting [well, the rest of us, anyway]?

You are fighting whoever your masters tell you to, and you are dying to make certain chunks of corporate america richer. I would have thought that some of you might have opened your eyes after the massive bail out of the corporate finance sector, but then perhaps the taxpayers need to get the bill first (which will take generations to pay). Who are you fighting? Good question - why dont you think about it a while before answering it yourself. Clue: it''s not the people who attacked america in 2001.

after all, the taliban was a creation of the GOP during the reagan years, they used to call them freedom fighters, and even rambo 3 was based on what a great guy bin laden used to be.

Why did we go to Afghanistan? To get bin Laden.

Really? Where is he then? So america invading Afghanistan was nothing to do with protecting the energy pipeline that Karzai and Bush senior set up many years earlier? Or is that a coincidence? Like the huge US bases firing up in Iraq and Afghanistan ... they are being built to get Bin Laden right??

It''''s not "fighting in a hornets nest". It''''s murdering and stealing in a sovereign country. SAUDIS attacked americans on 9/11 ... there were no Afghans, Iraqis, Iranians involved ... it was SAUDIS you dumb-arse waste of spaces. And now your country is ruined. How dumb can you get?

Where did Mr. Bin Laden go hide out? Who hid him? Who''s destroying Afghanistan? Who are we fighting [well, the rest of us, anyway]?

After reading many of the comments I have to start with some facts:

We are not fighting Afghans, we are fighting the Taliban. Not only is bin Laden responsible for 9/11, the Taliban has controlled Afghanistan in the past and Afghans don''t want that repeated.

We are not fighting Muslims in Afghanistan. Afghans are all Muslims. We are not threatened by the two billion Muslims in the world. Less than 2% of the two billion subscribe to the fundamentalist type of Islam that generates attacks--almost always against other Muslims.

No development of Afghanistan, including the end of the poppy trade, is going to happen without decent roads and bridges there. The constant warfare that country has endured--over 30 solid years so far--has destroyed everything. Afghanistan grew and exported wonderful agricultural products before that, but the only crop now that can get to market on the back of a donkey, without roads, is opium. Build and protect roads and bridges, and the drug trade will wither.

Why did we go to Afghanistan? To get bin Laden. Not to attack Afghanistan. Much of our military commitment--that means many of our soldiers--have to defend themselves, attack Taliban, and protect infrastructure.
