Sorry, you guys are way lost on this one. First, the question that you did not answer: Why should individuals who entered the US illegally receive BETTER healthcare than do Ameicans who live here legally? The answer is, of course, they should not receive better healthcare.

Americans are subjected to the same managed care requirements, perhaps even moreso, as what you described for the illegal immigrants under DIHS. Those illegal immigrants are not the only ones dying under the present managed care health system. Managed care is about making money, and hardworking premium paying Americans are dying too becuase they are being denied access to diagnostic and treatment and care - and especially because of managed care, healthcare has gone the way of pharmacological treatment as opposed to looking for cures.

So, if one is an illegal immigrant and finds America''s healthcare system not conducive to maintaining good health, and I can say is, Welcome to America!

Finally, I think no illegal immigrant should be able to sue an entity of the US Government - we have to pay for that too - and we still do not have access to our healthcare when we develop ulcers over the taxes we pay to do it.

While many people would agree that what happened to Mr Casteneda was horrible I guess something is confusing to me. Many thousands of hard working citizens are unable to receive treatment or even a medical evaluation due to a lack of health insurance. Cancer treatment, chemotherapy, and even treatment for mental health conditions are not provided to them because they are unable to afford it. I know that the article says society is measured by how we treat our prisoners but should society have to become prisoners to receive treatment? Now the US government will be expected to pay millions of dollars to the family of a man who could have received quicker treatment by not contesting his deportation. I am neither republican nor democrat but when families are left homeless by greed, people can''t afford to drive to work due to gas prices we are now being asked to compensate a criminal''s family because in a sense they received the same medical attention as numerous honest families something doesn''t make sense.

Sorry Jeri, not buying it. The next logical step in your observation is to put all inmate healthcare under some sort of "government hospital". No thanks.

60 Minutes should do a investigative piece on medical and mental health services run by for-profit corporations in our jails/detention facilities - now that show would no doubt reveal interesting statistics, i.e., increase in suicides, attacks on staff and inadequate services for inmates. Remember 60% of our jails are now filled with mentally challenged individuals instead of letting these people receive services in a hospital. The for-profit making companies they are interested in making money at the expense of people who are unable to get proper medical services anywhere else. So much for the richest nation on Earth - we can''t even care for our own in a humane and compassionate way. You could name the show "The Forgotten Ones"...

the US should stop detaining them, and just put them back on whatever means of transportation they came in on. We can not care properly for our own, so why should we spend a dime on an illegal? There are other countries "politicals" can free to, and then petition to enter our country legally.

Scott Paley should do a story on medical care in emergency rooms and hospitals. There are those who have died waiting for care or who have gotten substandard care. AND THEY ARE NOT ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. It is a crisis in medicine generally.

First of all let me say that I am grateful that Scott Pelley has brought this situation to the attention of the public. Crime or not, if our government is going to incarcerate detainees, than they have a moral obligation to provide swift, effective medical care for any person regardless of their criminal history. What is this country becoming? An abusive, intolerant delivery agent of inhumane treatment? In essence, our country, with their maltreatment of these detainees is behaving in a demonic way! They have positioned themselves as judge and jury and don''t care about their reckless abandonment of human beings. This atrocity is comparable to the way Nazi, Germany treated its prisoners. The only thing we''re doing differently is allowing them a slower, more deliberate path to extermination. I thought America was better than that! Please, everyone, write your legislators and beg them to stop this victimization of detainees.

Can''t remember the last "positive piece" by Scott Pelley - much less regarding US gov''t efforts on anything ! ! !
C''mon CBS, stop the bleeding heart routine for illegals - - No free ride for citizens should mean no free ride for anybody here! ! !
Please, somebody there realize that bashing the US gov''t is "bashing" and not beneficial to anybody. We have elections - use them wisely - for all gov''t officials and stop the generalizing.

Where about in the constitution does it say that American''s are entitled to free visits to the doctor...Doctors are expensive, thats the point on why you need private health insurance..Why should I pay for yours...this is not a socialist country.

When you are detained by law enforcement, you are "under" their control and care.

Where does it say anything about spreading democracy ?

anyone coming into this country illegally has no rights under the law.they''e disrespecting our country by breaking the law..when the constitution was concieved our founding fathers as bright and idealistic as they were could not have perceived the present situation, the problem is politicians (they are only interested in perks and power) have not kept up with the changing needs of the country, there are Americans out there who have fought for their country who are not getting adequate medical care...the hudge shoulkd throw out the case, Americans fought a revolution for what we have now let others do the same

I was born and raised in this country. I own my own company and have for the last 19 years. I can''t afford healthcare!!! I have an uncle who fought in World War II - he can''t afford his monthly prescriptions. I feel sorry these individuals had to endure what they did, but they came to a country in the wrong manner, they didn''t follow the rules, why do they deserve free healthcare when the citizens from the US can''t afford it - what makes them deserving??? I guess we should try Haiti or Mexico to find our healthcare and medications??? I would be ashamed to try and enter another country and get something for nothing!!!
