The Quaid''s story was an interesting sequel to the sleep deprivation story. Has anyone considered a link? From Mr. Quaid''s bully pulpit, he might consider the relationship between medical errors and shift work, hospital understaffing (or wrong-staffing) combined with the perpetual sleep deprivation inherent to medical practice.

I agree with the comment posted by janetrnc wholeheartedly. Even in our hospital, we have checks and balances by pharmacy, nursing staff, doctors, etc and still mistakes have happened. It is a fact of life that any institution that is run by human beings is not infallable and mistakes can happen. I work my tail off to provide quality care to my patients and to have some actor, who gets paid lots of money to do a job where someone''s life is NOT on the line, bad mouth the medical profession is wrong. Try working 12 hour shifts in an intensive care unit where someone''s life IS on the line Mr. Quaid before you go trying to discredit us and the work we do.

I was heartbroken to hear the Quaids story. My husband and I had trouble getting pregnant with our first child and had to have fertility treatment. We now have three beautiful children (2, 5, 7) but just recently miscarried at the end of my first trimester. Having some idea of how they must feel, both at the terrible tragedy that happened to their babies and the joy at having them in their lives makes this story very personal to me. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Quaid family.

Its is truly sad that the only sound bite shown was Mr. Quaid saying "the nurse didn''t bother to look at the bottle". This was a systems failure and should not be soley laid at the feet of the nursing profession. Nurses don''t dispense medication or stock medications on the nursing units. Any time there is a human component errors can happen so please don''t tar and feather the millions of Professional Registered Nurses who provide safe and compassionate care to patients day and night 24/7, 365. I''m sorry this happened to their babies but I challenge Mr. Quaid to walk in a nurse''s shoes for 24 hours and see how he feels afterward. You can sign me, proud to be a nurse.

Indeed medical errors can be fatal and our Israeli start up develop a unique disposable and our own propriatary software and hand held device, that prevent medical errors actively by a mandatory check for the caregiver of IV drug, perfusion or blood unit, if he didn''t make the appropriate checking it is impossible to give the medication, perfusion or blood unit to the patient.www.pro-iv.co.il

Mistakes can be avoidable if labeling of iv is significant specially if this drugs are highly sensitive to infants and young ones. There should be some changes on guidlines on labelling drug products. This is simple but effective way.

I did not realize that the latest comments would be first. So I just wanted the Quaids to know that I am so glad that they had a happy ending. Famous people definitely get heard more, so please do not give up on trying to change things. Corporate expense accounts are the real problem. If nurses, or any other professional, are badly trained it is because of this more than anything else. We cannot fix the Bad Apples until the Corporations decide that people are more important than their vacations or their prostitutes(male or female). !!!

I got tired of reading the comments. I hope that the Quaids decide to read this far. Of course I would not and did not. My comment is this: Corporate cutbacks force nurses to skimp on patient care all of the time. Most of this is because of exhaustion. 99% of Nurses care about what happens to their patients. Unfortunely exhaustion wins every time. We need to stop lining politian''s pockets if we want to stop this or anything other nasty thing that is going on. US or THEM? Expense accounts or our lives? Choose and then do something; Or stop whining when someone dies. Talking, with out action, helps no one. I know because my Mother died last year. Stop ******** and start doing!!!!

Your story was heartwrenching but has a happy ending. I am glad you made your story public. Hospitals, nurses and doctors need to be more careful. I lost my son, 16 years ago due to hospital, doctor negligence/misdiagnosis, human error. I am glad you are considering, or going to start up a awareness foundation for this.

hello there! Im rishee from the Philippines. Its just so weird that may be a month ago I have seen this documentary on REALITY ZONE that just like what happened to the twins, a nurse DELIBERATELY OVERDOSED INFANTS WITH HEPARIN. Her name was Genene Jones and that she was an LVN instead of an RN. She had a crazy disorder that was identified as.. someone who wants pity from other people and praise her because she does everything to be the hero.. I knew from the documentary seh has been imprisoned, but whoever is looking at this right now should tell the US GOVERNMENT OR ANYBODY WHO CAN DO SOMETHING to please check all hospital personnel and please be careful with the people who take care of the babies. It was so unthinkable and so unfathomable... we can''t eat that fact. I don''t know but I hope Americans have not fogotten that. I don''t know how recent that show was, but I do know what whatever comes out from Asian television aint that recent. I hope they have not forgotten that. You have a beautiful country and you can make it even more beautiful if you take care of the children. God Bless America and the World!

We sympathise so much with the Quaides because we had a daughter who went through something almost like their daughters. The sad thing is that our daughter went into a coma and we are not sure if that is not what killed her. The doctor misdiagnosed her when she was in the hospital. He took a cat scan and said that she was not having a hemmoridge and that everything was fine with her. They told us to take her back to our hotel room after her surgery even thoug she would not wake up. The next day we got a call that the doctor read the catscan wrong and that she was hemmoridging from 11:00 the morning before and she now needed to get to the hospital by ambulance emergency. We lost our daughter and the hospital is still trying to get more money from us and the insurance company. Our daughter is gone and we will not pay for what they did.

Your kidding me, the medical profession and manufactures of medicine use containers that all look alike? You have to read the print to know what is in them.... They could learn a little from the donut shops, just change the shape! Those little babies were very lucky.
