- THE ISSUES THAT FACE OUR MODERATELY SMALL WESTERN MARYLAND COMMUNITY, NOT ONLY IN TRADITIONAL HEALTH CARE BUT ALSO IN ADDICTIONS MATTERS IS BUT A SMALL REFLECTION OF THE HEALTH ISSUES THAT PLAGUE THE USA. THE COMMUNITIES AT LARGE CANNOT DO IT ALONE,DESPITE ALL GOOD WILL. EFFORTS LIKE RAM, WELL INTENTIONED, ARE ALSO STILL INADEQUATE...THOSE THEY HAD TO TURN AWAY, THOSE WHO COULD NOT GET THERE. THE BEST WE CAN HOPE IS, WITH A STIFF UPPER LIP, THAT IF WE ARE ABLE TO REDUCE, BY HOWEVER SMALL A DEGREE, THE TOTAL BURDEN OF HUMAN SUFFERING IN THIS WORLD, THEN OUR LIVES WILL HAVE BEEN ENRICHED AND GIVEN PURPOSE

- I EPPHASIZE WITH STORY. IN 1990, IN HAGERSTOWNB,MD,I AND 2 OTHERS STARTED A FREE CLINIC FOR THE MEDICALLY INDIGENT. YEAR ONE:400 PTS. NOW WE HAVE A MEDICAL BUILDING, STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS, PROFESSIONAL AND LAY, AND HAVE AT LEAST 17,000 PT VISITS/YR. ALSO, WE GIVE AWAY,FREE,OVER $250,000.00 WORTH OF MEDS EVERY 3 MONTHS. THIS IS ALL COMMUNITY FUNDED. NO STATE/FED. FUNDS. ITS SUCCESS IS AN INDICTMENT OF THE STATE OF HEALTH CARE HERE IN THE USA. I WOULD GLADLY GIVE MY TIME, AS AN MD(INTERNAL MEDICINE) TO RAP AS WELL.

- Bravo to 60 minutes for this story. Why does it seem like the news media is more interested in Hollywood than helping to tackle some of these bigger issues before the American people just give up. In the 60''s it was the media that made the black revolution possible letting people in the rest of the country see what was going on. Sometimes I wonder where everybody goes to lunch. I went from working for an ad agency with a 401 K, health insurance and a new car to working for minimum wage, no insurance and a car on it''s last leg. The fat keep getting fatter, is there no way to wake everyone up, have we lost the power that was once the media? Why are our tax dollars getting pissed away so the FBI can investigate steroid use in baseball when more than half of our country is living in poverty with no insurance, minimum wage jobs, rising utility costs, no savings accounts, living in rental property...I don''t know where to start and where to stop anymore. You at least have given hope to raise my voice instead of of sit in hopelessness. Thank you!

Royal Raymond Rife was an amazing man. Unfortunately, the BIG Pharama''s stole his work.

- It is too bad that the real problem with health care is not addressed. 4 yrs I have studied different medical treatments around the world. There r so many ways to wipe out the diseases our medical profession makes a fortune off. They do not want cures. They, like the FDA, politicians and tv r all pd off. I''m sure u could name many more. Type in Rife on google and find out about Royal Raymond Rife. Check out some of the things that Kevin Trudeau finds out about. Why won''t they interview Trudeau live? Ck out Jim Humble & MMS on U-tube. How about oriental medicine. Lets destroy all the rain forests so no new meds can come from them. The pt is, if we just cured the many things that r really curable, but we r told or brainwashed to the contrary, and used the many things to keep us healthy we would have so much money left over we could help everyone. The drug co''s, many doctors, other med people, and countless hospitals roll would be greatly reduced. As we all know when it comes to money we the people r expendable. I have talked to many doctors that r not trained or exposed to all medicines and cures around the world. I hear many countries say we r nuts to take a pill 4 everthing. I agree. Look outside the box people. Open your eyes and heal. To your good health everyone.

first; you need to take the enormous chip off your shoulder.
you talk about research...i suggest you do your own...i have both a european and canadian passport and i would suggest you know nothing about productivity or innovation. a health care system that covers all it''s citizens has nothing to do with socialism and everything to do with an individuals right to health care. canada''s health care system is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but thank GOD we don''t need to have RAMs. the last time i looked canada and the EU were capitalist nations...
it''s great that you donate; kudos to you...but the fact that you had to mention it says more about you than others. statistically; the people that donate the most are the people that have the least. - Reply to this comment
- In PA we are trying to pass Senate Bill 300 and House
bill 1660. It is called the Family & business Healathcare Security Act. Details are available athttp://healthcare4allpa.org --it covers everyone and most important it''s not for profit but for the health of all of our citizens. Claire, Erie, PA - Reply to this comment

- Rfield9 and noaanhc...I urge both of you to take a basic macro economics class, and then build on that knowledge through objective research using raw data sources%u2026not blogs, not talk radio, not WHO...do your own research and connect the dots.
The reality is that socialized medicine and government redistribution of wealth has unintended cultural consequences. When taxes are increased, the cost of not working decreases. In most European countries you will notice relatively high levels of unemployment, low economic growth, high worker absentee rates, low worker productivity, and less innovation and risk taking. Ever wonder why it%u2019s a cultural norm for Europeans to intermingle a few hours of work with a three hour lunch?
While you think the answer is to redistribute our nation%u2019s wealth through our government(socialism), I believe that there%u2019s a reason why most major nations have chosen to bypass socialism and have adopted capitalism. Additionally, we all know how well the government has managed social security.
By the way...I annually donate more than most Americans make in a year. But because I can afford to donate, you probably don%u2019t view this as charitable. I apologize for my pathetic existence. - Reply to this comment
- Your story on Remote Area Medical had me in tears. What a sad day it is for the US when our own are suffering and in pain, without the basic medical needs of life. These are hardworking, taxpayers, US citizens. Lots of us are a paycheck away from being in this same situation. LIFELINE has our prayers and now a monthly donation as well to help with the extraordinary work they are doing free of charge. Linda McCafferty

- Oh yes and Frist''s brother and father founded HCA (Health Corporation of America) the country''s largest for profit hospital chain in the country. From the LA Weekly- "the Bush Justice Department suddenly ended a near-decadelong federal investigation into how HCA for years had defrauded Medicaid, Medicare and Tricare (the federal program that covers the military and their families), giving the greedy health-care behemoth%u2019s executives a sweetheart settlement that kept them out of the can." Those republicans can''t stand goverment social programs except when they can enrich themselves.

- Bill Frist, from Tennessee was an embarassment to most physicians and a pox upon our profession.

- Hate to break your bubble, noaanhc, but as long as the private for profit health insurance companies have any part of "universal" health insurance it will NOT be forever. There will be no guarantees. They will have so many strings attached and limitaions it will make your head spin. None of the European or Canadian plans have "universal" health insurance, it is single payer insurance. Single payer is the only workable an most cosytn effective plan.
