This article acts like rape is new with this war. Rape has been a basic tool of war since the beginning of time.

where''s oprah?

this has got to be the most disgusting thing i have ever read. how in the world is this kind of development possible, and ignored? who is in charge of africa?? is this not a black issue anymore? are ''black issues'' focused on those only in the US? and do blacks choose to ignore these issues, because they do not affect them, because they are not africans? if influential african americans don''t engage in the creating awareness for their people, and expect others to do so instead, these conditions are going to affect more places than just africa. give up some of the bling, and take a look at what is going on in your world for a change...

To sharynmadiso, RE sending $$ to a specific woman: To give much to one woman makes her a target for additional attacks & seriously jeopardizes her & her family''s safety. (My daughter Lisa, founder of Run for Congo Women, has visited Congo twice). It is best to give thru a well vetted program. (Women for Women Int''l received the most prestigious award possible for non-profits in 2006 & is highly trustworthy.)

The Women for Women Int''l program is excellent. Of the $27/month it costs to sponsor a woman for a year, $10/month cash goes directly to her (2 WfW employees witness and sign that she receives it), $5/month is given to her in a lump sum when she graduates. The rest provides literacy & human rights training, group work with women who have similar experiences & training in how to run a small business. The $60 cash received at the end of the yr is seed money to start a small business. Sometimes a woman must use it for meds to save a child''s life. I have sponsored 14 women in 3 years by giving up my latte a day habit. Join me! (See www.runforcongowomen.org). It''s the best money I have ever spent!

Educate your community, your group. Ask others to sponsor. Do not forget the hundreds of thousands of other women like Lucienne - or their children!

To sharynmadiso, regarding sending financial support to a specific woman. To give any woman specifically would make that woman a target for all kinds of attacks and extortion and seriously jeopardize her and her family''s safety. (My daughter Lisa, founder of Run for Congo Women, has visited Congo twice). It is best to give through an established program. Women for Women International received the equivalent of the Nobel Peace prize for non-profits and is a highly trustworthy organization.

I am a disable american veteran and my world and thiers is so far apart. I can''t or don''t want to imagine being raped repeatedly by soldiers. Once is enough for me. In 1986 I was raped by three or more unknown soldiers with the barrel of an M16A1 rifle.
I am just now getting the physical injuries left behind surgically repaired. The psychological injuries are devastating and ongoing. My struggle for some form of justice has developed into a 22 year struggle with the Veterans Administration. It is strange to me to feel a connection with these multitude of women in Africa. I am a 53 year old man.

I keep thinking about a terror movie I rented. Not about the Congo, but somewhere up near turkey. And this ''terrorist'' who said he didn''t maim. He killed, because killing was acceptable to him. But he didn''t maim.

I want to thank 60 minutes and Anderson Cooper for doing the story on the systematic rape of women and young girls in Africa. The habitual rape of women in war environments is well known to those who care to research such matters, yet the reality of this perennial tragedy is hardly ever reported on in the conventional news. Rape and sexual assault are a daily occurrence around the world: particularly so in war environments where chaos, fear, and hatred abound. Its so very important to shed light on this issue and to help promote organizations that victims can turn to, like WOMEN FOR WOMEN. Rare and particularly insightful was the straight-forward explanation of how rape is intended to destroy a person''s inner strength, psyche, or sense of power over their life.
I want to thank 60 minutes and Anderson Cooper for focusing on this and other women''s issues (recently he reported on starving children in ethiopia) and for Mr. Cooper''s sensitivity to these issues.
