Former CIA Director Breaks His Silence

- It still doesn't make any sense why anybody would want a war with Iraq unless they sincerely felt that there was a violation of treaty. And the 15-0 UN vote didn't help any. I find it pretty far reaching (in fact a little election suspicious) that according to the media "there was a neocon movement to push the pretext of a war with Iraq that was already decided". If everybody felt there was a violation of treaty, then what was the justification not to go to war? UMNOVIC?

- That we are having this discussion about Tenent
and not the policy makers is what's wrong with this story. The real truth is that war in Iraq was already decided years before 9-11. the only thing missing was a pretext....a gulf of tonkin incident.Tenent was not on the tv channels prior to the Iraq invasion, it was Cheney, Rice, Perle, Fythe, Pipes, wolfowitz and even ex CIA dir. Woosley, all Neocons, Explaining dangerous saddam hussein was and how IMINENT the danger was from WMDs. Everybody knew he HAD Chemical & biological weapons, (rumsfeld himself sold much to him in 1983)but as was reported and estimated by the UN in 1999 that 90% was destroyed by the UN inspectors in the 1990s. Why isn't any one asking where are the neocons now to answer the Questions of why were they so keen to go to war in Iraq???? It seems to me that all the energy and military should have been in Afganistan!!!! Yes Tenet should have resigned rather than take part in the build up for the war. As should have Colin Powell. But then I think they would have been called cowards (at that time) at a time when revenge was red hot still for 9-11-01. Ask Where are the NEOCONS now! They should be answering the questions!!!! - Reply to this comment
- I think Tenet was pathetic.
He states he gave Bush's speech to subordinates. They did not contact him with concerns about the validity of some of the statements in Bush's speech.
He claims he takes some of the responsibility because he did not read the speech himself.
Bull. He takes ALL the responsibility. # 1 rule of command: You can delegate authority, but you can not delegate responsibility.
After all, we are not talking about a 900 page document. We are talking about a few pages of speech.
Weasel. He has failed the American people. - Reply to this comment

- Who's to say what his intentions are with that money and who's to say he has made contributions already. I haven't heard one or the other as to what his financial aims are for obtaining 4 million before it was written. Until that becomes public knowledge if it does become public we are only speculating on what it had been used for.
I am not saying one way or another as to whether he should be responsible or not, because persoanally I believe that Chaney and Rummy orchestrated the whole 911 attack, with the help and common knowledge that the Bush family had close ties to Bin Laden for years. Durning the reagan years Chaney and Rummy were key players in the defence and protection of those towers and the test runs when they used the planes to fly into the towers. they knew everything inside out on who, how, what where and when...
So I am the wrong person to offer any points of view on some issues. I guess I fall into the conspiracy theory catagory if I feel this way about the tower attack. - Reply to this comment
- "the oval office brushed it off as if they felt like Tenet had always been over reactive or obsessive with the fear of Bin Laden attacking the US in some way. "
The Bush admin did the same thing to Richard Clark, the 'terrorist czar'. - Reply to this comment
- Mr. Tenet apparently admits to knowing that the war was sold on the basis of lies. He is therefore one of those responsible for the results. How is it possible to obtain 4 million dollar advance to tell such stories? An honorable person would donate every penny of this to the victims of this war: the maimed and the families of the dead.

- well, here's the link to this book. this book was written about Bush before he took us to War and the decision making process for taking us to War and it clearly states that they believed George tenet was just obsessed with bin laden attacking the US and how they blew it off as an obsession of Tenets ...... Geroge Tenent had been making noise about Bin Laden for awhile before they went to war and they were all aware of it and it clearly made note how they percieved Mr. Tenet just being obsessed and the threat was only his fear of Bin Laden, due to past intellegence information he already had revealed about Laden
Go get the book at read it for yourselves.

There is a book I read back in 2003 called "Bush at War" in that book it plainly states, that when Tenet heard the Towers had been destroyed his instant reaction was "Bin Laden" and it goes on to tell that George Tenet was extremely sensitive about Bin Ladens threat and everyone in the oval office brushed it off as if they felt like Tenet had always been over reactive or obsessive with the fear of Bin Laden attacking the US in some way. - Reply to this comment
- I lay responsibility for 9/11 and every other failure of the last 7 years at the feet of all Republicans - in general (for tying the nation's and Clinton's attention up with impeachment and other nonsensical extra-judicial matters that amounted to nothing), and in particular (for putting the instruments of power into the hands of two psychologically disordered men bent on power and wealth at the expense of the constitution).
The media will now devote most of its on air coverage to George Tenet's claims, which aren't news by any shot, and the denials by neocons to ********* points ("I couldn't have said it on a Wednesday because I was in Paris until Saturday").
When Richard Perle said it doesn't matter - Perle's already on the record as having pushed for war in Iraq prior to 2000 as a signator to PNAC's letter. As chairman of the Pentagon's Defense Policy Board he spoke to PBS' Frontline about attacking Iraq ("Gunning For Saddam") in mid-October, 2001.
Paul O'Neill and Richard Clark, among others, have all said that Bush was intent upon going to war with Iraq from the day he entered the White House. - Reply to this comment
- While George Tenet was a Clinton appointee who was kept by Bush, let's remember the history accurately of how Clinton came to appoint him.
Senate Republicans refused to confirm Clinton's first choice, NSA advisor Anthony Lake, but told Clinton that they would confirm Tenet, who had been a deputy director.
Throughout Clinton's presidency, Republicans blocked his choices for just about every position which they would later claim during this Bush administration "A president is entitled to his choice." - Reply to this comment

That would explain why BOTH PRESIDENTS Clinton & Bush went on TV explaining Hussein was "developing Weapons of Mass Destruction"
Maybe neither Clinton nor Bush lied about WMD, maybe they were both misled by this idiot.

- I have not read the book, but it seems a mix of interesting detail and self-serving propaganda.
Whatever his opinions, Mr. Tenet was part of the group that brought us this war. Even if he did not push for it, he could have prevented it. It is obscene that he now reaps millions of dollars--just look at his advance--from this tragedy. He should donate every penny from his lecturing fees, advance, and royalties, to those who have come back wounded, and to the families of those who were killed in this unnecessary war. He will be followed by all the other members of the administration in the coming years--none of them should become rich peddling their side of the story. They need to come to grips with the suffering and misery they have caused. - Reply to this comment
- What a sad commentary when all these people with political connections butter up to their leaders and take advantage of all the publicity as did Kissinger, officers in the Viet Nam War, etc.
and then reap the spoils when they write books about their actions, and here we go again with Tenet. Makes one think that the book publishers
are taking orders from the administrations as
a reward for the wrong doings these clowns did which brought chaos to the world. If these experts didn't have the nerve to tell their President the real truth, they could have at least leaked it to the news media at the time
it was happening. - Reply to this comment

- George Tenet, another Bush appointee, didn't think it was worthwhile to let the American people know that the administration wanted to go to war in Iraq. If something is wrong, you voice your concerns to the press, public and, by not doing so, you are failing the American people.

- George Bush and his circle of loyalists, had an Iraq in their crosshairs for many years. In 1997, they established PNAC, THE PROJECT FOR A NEW AMERICAN CENTURY, a NeoCon think tank. Look this up. You will see their agenda and membership. The membership went on to include a "who's who" of the Bush Administration...Armitage, Bolton, Cheney, Rove, Rumfield and Wolfowitz, to name a few.
I submit to you that Tenet was kept on by BushCo, because he truly believed that Saddam had WMD. This was a bonus for BushCo.
Even without Tenet or Powell, BushCo was Hell bent to invade Iraq. Unfortunately, for the American People, those red flag, "hair on fire" terrorists alerts and those "bin Laden attack on US imminent" memos were ignored. Thus, BushCo got their Pearl Harbor. - Reply to this comment
- JackNYC,,, These people in the administration aren't mercinaries, none where even military, They just hire them because you can't make them show accountability..
This administration are more like the idiots who sneak around your neighborhood all hours of the night dressed as ninja's peeking in your windows & stealing from your garage. - Reply to this comment
