Morley Safer Speaks To A Lobbyist Some People Love To Hate

- Watch-dog groups are very much like religous organizations: they are governed by dogma, run by zealots, populated by the "faithful" and often ignore "the facts". I object to being proselytized by either. While we may find the tactics of the "Bermans" of the world to be a bit over-bearing at times, at least they are not asking me for money or blind commitment to the latest health craze. And I found Safer's attitude disingenuous - as if he were in his line of work out of a vacational calling rather than to make money. We all work to make money. Mr. Berman's method of doing so is no less "immoral" or "evil" than the local minister who enjoins his flock by the threat of eternal damnation. "Dr. Evil"? Give me a break. I found him refreshing.

- "Rick Berman is lawyer and a lobbyist"
Rick Berman is a scum twice over.
Says little about people that defend and agree with him.
Lobbyist are paid to laugh at ideas they don't represent, hence:
"He's against Mothers Against Drunk Driving"

- I like this guy. To really see a nanny state, go visit the US Army in Korea. 35 year old soldiers are required to come "home" at midnight. A soldier that does a morning 5 mile run with a hangover will make changes in their life style, they may not be able to change the run, but they will definately change the hangover.

Unfortunately I've missed number three, but I'm still working on the other ones.

- One thing people need to always remember is that, agree with Mr Berman or not, be careful who you do believe in. The so-called Center For Science in the Public Interest sounds like a honest straightforward quasi-government research group, but they're nothing more then a vegan front group whose founder is pushing for the day everyone eats no meat and consumes no eggs or dairy products at all. In fact he was once quoted as saying there is NO none vegan food that he doesn't want banned. He's a real crackpot, so watch out.

- Mr. Berman is part of what's wrong with a lot of free enterprise. On their way to the bank, he and the ones he defends want to be free to inflict their poisons, fraud, cruelty, and death on society, while the rest of us pick up the tab after the destruction. If there were not so many like Mr. Berman, perhaps we would not have so much need for the " do-gooders," and Congress would not have to be in the parent business.
Mr. Berman refers to his addiction as a "calling." Hitler, Dohmer, Hussein, all had a calling too. - Reply to this comment

- Mr. Berman's food friends are covering up the glutamate or umami flavor enhancers they are putting in the foods they sell. Glutamate or umami based flavor enhancers are drugs on the brain that create an addiction to the foods that have them. They are disguised as either natural or artificial flavorings that fix the food game going in. That is why people crave them and that is why a lot of people eat too much of them. There are no ethical standards in flavor enhancer game.

- Mr Berman is a spin master and that is what he is paid for! This is a man who trains executives about how to manage their message to the media. It is no wonder why he is so smooth.
Listening to Rick pontificate about the "Nanny state" reminds me of a great comedic story. The comedian talks about how, after 20 years of nagging and concessions to his wife, she comes to him and complains he is not the man she married. No kidding! After growing up and spending more than 20, 30, 40 years with advertising that attempts to convince us that fast food is nutritionally acceptable for every day consumption it is now the publics fault for eating to much. And this is simply too much of the wrong "nutritionally acceptable" food with trans-fats and all. He completely leaves out the psychological effects of advertising. We advertise because it works! Advertising modifies behavior or we would not do it!
Now, Mr. Berman thinks he can hide the truth behind data that is clearly designed to illustrate his point. We all know that statistics can be worded to support just about any position.
Thanks for attempting to expose his mistaken certainties! - Reply to this comment

- The nanny state is a sick joke played on the American people in order to either 1. make money as a favor to someone or 2. increase taxes. There is an underlying political struggle started by the Clinton administration which in my humble opinion is killing the democratic run for presidency. And everyone else has been ignoring this, since transfat isn't the plague in our country. The trade deficit is. As is social security.
I think the transfat ban in NYC was a bit harsh. Sure it's bad for you but to fine penalties for it? The same thing goes for smoking in smoggy California. As far as that sad issue goes, I will introduce you to socialism. They will tax and attempt to fine smokers to create a government institutionalized preschool for specific affluent neighborhoods. The smokers will get none of the money back in the form of health care or centers to assist them to quit. In the meantime, smokers are literally harassed about their habit, while meth and illegal immigration run amuck unchecked.
Whatever money this man makes is nothing compared to the scary social experiment being run by these "puritans". - Reply to this comment
- I say right on Mr Berman. I don't care how much money you make you are worth every penny of it to stand up to the do-gooders

- It is about time someone decided to help Americans to become responsible for their own actions. I first heard the first warning when I was eleven, Yep fake sugar gave rats cancer, if I ate 8 pounds of it a day. I am heavy and belong to a Union. I know why I am heavy and wonder what the Union bosses are doing for me. I can't go to our regular lunch on Friday, no smoking and eating in bars, whatelse is open at three am. When will Americans realize we all have to die, no matter what they believe. So lets make our own decisions.

- I paid for insurance that is why insurance will pay my medical bills. MY fat butt only cost you money IF you allow a commie like Clinton to force gov. health care on us. Do you really want the people from FEMA running health care?

- Yes, it's the public's freedom of choice to smoke and eat whatever they want, as long as the their choices don't infringe on my rights. Consumers can make wiser choices when we are given clear facts about what is in our food. For example, we have the right to know that our food contains manufactured trans fats. It's proven that there is no safe amount of consumption of this artificial fat. It places the public at risk for many diseases, one being coronary heart
disease. We have the right to be EDUCATED!!! - Reply to this comment
