Steve Kroft Profiles Notre Dame's Head Coach
Add a Comment See all 87 Comments
Our pedigree includes legendary coach Woody Hayes, ( who was also a distinguished professor of military history at The Ohio State University )the only two-time heisman winner current OSU Alumni Society Director Archie Griffin, and a fan base that must certainly equal if not surpass that of the Irish.
Current coach Jim Tressel may use salty language with players, but I have never heard him use it and he always ALWAYS puts education first and sets a shining example through his own philanthropy, such as giving a sizable sum to the renovation of the OSU William Oxley Thomson Library.
This season, OSU will play at least 2 if not 3 nationally ranked #2 teams, Texas, University of Michigan and likely the #2 team in post-season play at the Tostitos Bowl. I can not think of a team in recent history that has played 3 #2 ranked teams in any single season of play and if that is an easy schedule, I would like to see a hard one.
Next season, please do a story on the OSU Buckeyes and see if in fact you still believe in the definition of College Football in America you began this program with.- Reply to this comment

- Hello 60-mins.,
This was one of the best 60-min. shows I've watched in a long time,"Thank you"! It is an insperation to see what our milatery has in case of the sacrifice they give comes up! Its so horrable what the rich oil companies have gotten away with!
The main reason why I watched this 60 mins. was I'm a huge Notre Dame fan and I'm from New England and have seen what coach Weis can do! I love his open and honest way he coaches and above all I'm glad and proud to have him as the head coach of the "Fighting Irish"!Thank you coach Weis for bringing back the "Irish"! Thank you 60 mins. for telling the world about the return of the "Irish"!
Take care, Always! Bill R.
PS- I love the nurse on the "A fighting chance" segment!
PSs- I love coach Weis for bing"Big man on campus"! - Reply to this comment
- How refreshing to hear a little swearing and a lot of motivating from a coach who is to intill into young men the meaning of excellence. No PC garbage, just the brutal truth. Off the football field you don't hear Charlie swear, but you do hear about his committment to family. Here's a guy who himself has never played a minute of football yet has set the standard for what other coaches should be. Kudos to the coach and CBS for airing a great story of a great man!

- I GIVE CHARLIE CREDIT, HE CALLED HIMSELF A JERK.I THINK HE SETS THE STANDARD FOR BEING OBNOXIOUS. N.D. HAS LOST MY RESPECT FOR EMPLOYING SUCH AN INDIVIDUAL. WHO IS HE SUPPOSED TO BE A ROLE MODEL FOR?

- "If Notre Dame has played a lax schedule over the years then I am a ten foot tall chineese man"??? *** ndfantp? It's ignorant statements like that and the homogeneity of Notre Dame that bothers me most. I am a graduate of the Notre Dame and most of the minorities would agree that there are way too many ignorant and naive students at the school. Notre Dame would greatly benefit by opening itself up by actively attracting more minority students and bringing more cultural awareness to the student body.
I agree that the Notre Dame faithful such as that ignorant poster, would never be comfortable with a black coach. While I think Charlie Weis is a great fit and an even better coach, the way they handled the firing of Ty was horrible. - Reply to this comment
- To all of the ND haters from OSU heres one for you ..Maybe you should read the sports page or watch the news ...ND does play Michagan not Bowling Green...Or plan on playing YSU anyway how dare you insult our military acadamies as lowly teams. OH excuae me you should be proud of your well known convicts.. Now thats a lowly crew if you ask me Good luck to you .. you need it with your obvious lack of ability to respect others thats a bit of unsportsman like conduct ND IS A SPECIAL PLACE get over it !!!!!

- If Notre Dame has played a lax schedule over the years then I am a ten foot tall chineese man. Last year our schedule would have been stronger had it not been for all the usually good teams having mediocre seasons. We rarely have more than 2 opponents who wont put up a good fight.
On the grounds of criticizing ND, All ND fans are highly critical of what goes on at the University, and especially with our football team. If a coach doesn't win, then we get rid of them. I can' think of anything more critical than that. - Reply to this comment
- Well, as is often the case, an African American will generally see things differently than an Anglo person, but you are entitled to your opinion, but you can't tell me that ND was completely comfortable with having a Black man as head coach.
Undeniably, Charlie Weis is a good coach and the cursing thing does not bother me (although) I coach and do not curse. Just because a coach does not show emotion does not mean he does not care. They say the same thing about Karl Dorrell at UCLA. Did Ty Willingham show more emotion when he won early at ND? Did Karl Dorrell show more emotion last year when UCLA went 10-1? I respect a Black man who is in control of his emotions since we are so often portrayed as being over-emotional. The lack of emotion thing is just an excuse for firing TW.
Lastly, why is everyone an ND hater just because they criticize ND? Can't an ND fan or just neutral fan ever admit when ND is flawed somehow? I'm a Florida State fan and I always admit FSU's flaws. Now, FSU doesn't have the tradition of ND and it's not tied to a faith and a nationlity, but it has equally steadfast fans. ND has played a lax schedule over the years and those who rank schedules (professionals) agree, but they must be ND haters as well, right? - Reply to this comment
- Charlie Weis
Hmmm, highly intelligent, well educated, hard driving, intense and profane, great motivator and teacher, fiercely loyal to family, friends, and players, high moral character, amazing leadership qualities, relentless in pursuit of excellence.
Reminds me of the greatest field commander this country ever produced -- LT General GEORGE SMITH PATTON JR. Great match between the coach and Notre Dame. - Reply to this comment

- Hey Woodyhayes7, are you completely out of your mind? It sounds to me that you are awfully jealous that Notre Dame and Charlie Weis got the story and your Buckeyes didn't. I mean, I seriously thought your post was a joke. You should really know your facts before you write about something that you obviously have no clue about. But i will agree with you on your point that 60 Minutes should "bring their crews" to Columbus to do a story. I would love to watch a classic piece about how many convicts and criminals Ohio State's football program has, or maybe one about the coaches and boosters giving the players money, or about how OSU would have beat Texas in '05 if it wasn't for Troy Smith's suspension. Get a clue Woodyhayes7, you're dillusional and jealous!

- Since we are only limited to 1500 characters which is 100 less than Charlie's PERFECT SAT SCORE, we here in the Golden Dome part of the country have a few things to say. 1) ND graduates TOP STUDENTS who happen to play football on Saturday. 2)We graduate 96% of those saturday players. 3)We are a SPECIAL PLACE, obviously you have not heard of NOTRE DAME MYSTIQUE. 4)If you have never heard a cuss word on a football field, then you have never been to a football game. 5)Three Super Bowl rings in Four Years, beat THAT!! 6)If any of you think that OSU is for REAL, can you say MAURICE CLAURETT=Prison sentence. 7)You don't see Charlie going up in the stands after opponents fans do you? 8) ND plays a very hard schedule, that is why MICHIGAN IS #2 and WILL BEAT OSU. 9)Why is everyone on the ILLINI kick, they aren't too shabby, did any of you catch the ILLINI/WIS game saturday? 10)Come to South Bend to see REAL FOOTBALL, if you want play dough football stay in Columbus. and finally #11 is where OSU will be ranked after the Woverine's kick their sorry butts very soon. And thanks to those so called mentioned lowly military academies for "helping" the Lady on the Dome out when things were not so good. May I remind the one who called them the "lowly military academies", its the caliber of people in those academies that make this COUNTRY A FREE PLACE FOR YOU TO POST STUPID COMMENTS.
GO Irish, Navy, Air Force and Army.
In South Bend we predict UM 31 OSU 17. - Reply to this comment
- IN response to the "Colorline" Tyrone was not fired because he was black, he was fired because he had two losing seasons in a row, and two humiliating bowl losses.

- I understand what you are saying about Ty but it wasnt his skin color that mattered. He was hired because he knew how to run a respected program that has both good football and a high academic standard. He didn't have just one bad year he had one good year a few of mediocre years and then a bad year. That was following Bob Davie who had a lot more mediocrity. The alumni has a lot of input on the coach and they felt he was too passive about how he coached, which he was. It was never about skin color, it was about results.

- I enrolled on this site just to respond to the Weis story. I'd always respected ND (although I never liked them) because they were usually winners. However, after the way they mistreated Ty Willingham, I could never respect ND again. One may say, at least ND hired Ty, but that was only because O'Leary misrepresented himself and ND needed a last-minute hire.
Ty had one really bad season and gets ousted. Why hire a Black coach if all you are going to do is fire him after a few years? Did you just want to say that you hired a Black coach? You kept Gerry Faust all those losing years.
You can run that "ND is a special place that wins the right way" line all you want, but everyone who hasn't drunk the Kool-Aid knows different. Just like forgiving Weis his cursing and firing the school's first Black coach for not winning everything immediately, ND is just like every other school. Money talks. If you weren't ND, the national media might have the guts to criticize you as opposed to celebrate you. - Reply to this comment
- All during the NFL Games of Sunday October 29th the lead was that Mr. Weis was swearing etc on the sideline during the games and that the priests would be surprised. No they won't be ,the story is the same with a Catholic School as it would be with any other major university in which the football programs is a real money maker the rule of action is "out of sight, out of money" when large amounts of money are involved.
