- Tonight's 60 Minutes (10/22/06) IMPRESSED ME AS A PITCHED BATTLE, OR AT LEAST A CONFRONTATION, between Nancy Pelosi vs. Lesley Stahl. My mind did not receive any clarification of possible facts bearing on Nancy's performance as a peoples representative. I heard Lesley's challenging questions as to the efficacy of demos opposition. This strikes me as a mind-set of the media to maintain the corporate power that created our current monsters in the administration. Skeptical criticism is the function of journalism, not projecting the least common denometer that will placate the restless people. If CBS is to compete in the field of informing the public, you are going to have to sharpen your pencils. Perhaps a new reading of H. L. Mencken. Due to the media failue we have an ignorant population that is easily Goebbelized. Farewell noble experiment!

- I was so disgusted by Leslie Stahl's interview with Nancy Pelosi that I registered so I could comment on Stahl's terrible performance. Stahl characterized candor as incivility. Calling Bush incompetent based on his performance in Katrina is not incivility; it is candid. Stahl's interview was sexist throughout. Pelosi's remarks which were discussed in the interview were not personal. A personal remark against Bush might be something like "he's ugly or stupid." Commenting on his obvious poor performance is simply candor. Stahl need look no further than Bush's own party for plenty of other similar comments.
Perhaps the lowest part of the show was Stahl's remarks about Pelosi's wardrobe. Would Stahl have worn sandals to walk around that Iowa field? Undoubtedly cowboy boots were the order of the day in Iowa, but not appropriate in Connecticut. What would Stahl have remarked had Pelosi worn boots in CT and Armani in Iowa?
Send Stahl into retirement quickly. She is embarrassing CBS. - Reply to this comment
- I wonder if Pelosi is a good choice for speaker. Though I happen to agree with much of what she says, she's a very polarising a figure. She's from an extremely liberal area and may be too driven by the politics of that constituency and thus alienating to people who are more to the center of the political spectrum. She will give conservatives a lot of amunition to shoot up the Dems. The GOP will try to make her the face and voice of the party and until the Dems take back the White House that's exactly what she'll be. I think that the speaker of the house should be strong figure with a more centrist aproach.

This election is not about electing Nancy Pelosi. It's about putting an end to the the corruption, incompetance and failed policies of Bush and the GOP.
As for Viet Nam comparrisons to Iraq. Iraq already is a new Viet Nam. Like Viet Nam this administration didn't have the political will to send enough troops and not strategicly competant enough to win. Like Viet Nam the distruction and carniage has been apocoliptic. At least half a million Iraqis have been killed in three short years. Nearly three thousand Americans have been killed and tens of thousands more seriously wounded for life. Like Viet Nam, the soldiers on the ground aren't clear who is friend and who is enemy. Like Viet Nam the American public have lost confidence in the leaders who got us into it. Just like Viet Nam this war began on a lie and continues on a lie. Just like Viet Nam history will look back on Iraq as a huge mistake and huge waste of life and treasure for nothing. Hopefully, the big difference will be that we will get out before we waste any more of either. - Reply to this comment
- Nancy Pelosi wore Armani in one public appearance and cowboy boots in another; and not only that, she ate two (count em) two pork chops. Gosh - I wonder what the male representatives of Congress had on their backs. Such critical info to have about the next Speaker of the House. I would have expected better of Lesley Stahl. And by the way, Lesley, what are you wearing right now.

- Why did Leslie Stahl use precious airtime in her interview of Nancy Pelosi to comment on Pelosi's clothing - Armani here, boots there, and the fascinating information that possibly the next speaker of the house ate two (count em) two pork chops. Gads...can you imagine commenting on a male representative's clothing and what they ate at a public function? Please, Leslie, tell me what you're wearing right now.

- The issue regarding Iraq is not a question of cutting and running from conflict. It%u2019s an issue of bearing the cost of keeping an American military presence with little international participation.
The comment about making Bush and Caney lame ducks is right on and this election should be a referendum on the GOP's approval rating.
Restoring the stability in Iraq is something the United States cannot do by itself. We need international participation from Iraq%u2019s neighbors to share the burden and to show the Arabs we are not going to occupy their country for oil. However, the total loss of credibility on the international level will make it difficult for Bush to build any alliance to stabilize Iraq.
It is even possible the upcoming election is a measure of the GOP%u2019s credibility and Nancy Pelosi will probably become the new speaker of the house.
Considering the total collapse of GOP credibility and the record of failure, I can live with the change. The only reason people are mentioning %u201CSan Francisco Values%u201D is to generate fear and divide the growing ballot that wants to change the direction - Reply to this comment
- Pelosi rules! I'm glad SOMEBODY has the guts to stand up for AMERICAN values (freedom, equal rights for all) and denounce the Bush/Cheney LIES for what they are. She's feisty at 66 -- being an over-50 baby-boomer myself, that gives me hope to carry on. Thanks, Nancy!! You go girl!

- I have never written into a show, newspaper, etc. - ever. I never have because I feel like I should be absolutely certain of something before I'm vocally critical. But I was so disgusted by Lesley Stahl's interview I had to register and post a comment. I usually respect 60 Minutes and its reporting but I hope to never see another Lesley Stahl interview. And if I do - I only hope that she grills those in power who are responsible for the most unforgivable kind of policies that have divided the nation, that have shocked the world with their hypocrisy, literally killed thousands of innocent people and American soldiers, increased the hatred/resentment of terrorists and innocent people in the Middle East, have neglected all Americans except for their rich friends, have encouraged the dangerous mix of religion and politics in gov't, and on and on and on the way she did Nancy Pelosi. If Lesley Stahl considers holding those accountable for the destructive policies, lies, hypocrisy, etc. "revenge," than I am truly ashamed that she is American. Getting to the truth, holding corrupt politicians accountable, then helping the country heal and unite is the best thing that could ever happen to our wonderful country and restore its standing in the global community.

- I wish people would stop talking about just impeaching Bush and Cheney...
We should all be talking bout what sort of JAIL TIME they should get for their crimes. - Reply to this comment
- President Pelosi...
Lookss like you will be taking over when Cheney and Bush are impeached and JAILED for their War Crimes.
There is an undeniable abundance of hard evidence that Cheney/Bush LIED us into the needless, horrific War On Iraq -- about as high a "High Crime and Misdomeaner" as you can get! A few (or several) hundred thousand innocent Iraqi civilians dead, nearly 2,800 US troops dead, thousands and thousands more maimed for life, not to mention $300 Billion (so far).
In addition to the Horror of War foced upon our troops and the Iraqi people, these Neocons are responsible for expoliting 9-11 to start their War of Agression, which has radicalized the next generation of young men in the Middle East, leaving us far less safe.
So, welcome President Pelosi -- and good luck, for you have inherited a TOTAL DISASTER. - Reply to this comment
- Stahl really is full of it. Voting no on tax cuts. What tax cuts? The one's for the super rich. That's all bush & people ever put through and THE REST OF US ARE PAYING FOR THOSE TAX CUTS - WE'RE IN DEBT BABY!!!! We all we pay for all those tax cuts with interest! Tax cuts are nothing but buying votes in my mind. Stahl uses complete hogwash in a vain attempt to put down a decent honorable woman.

- Not ready for San Francisco values. I guess you like the bush/republican values? Gee, let's go off on an illegal, preemptive war and lie about all the reasons because we need to get the war going now while we can. Turn the country into a living hell with thousands of people dead. Oh yeah, there's some values. Or, maybe go off into pedophile land with the pages. Are we in touch yet? Nancy out of touch, I don't think so. She's right in the middle of the mess and has the guts and know how to straigten it out.

- Unbelievable interview by Leslie Stahl - she apparently can't believe that Pelosi has the temerity to speak her mind and shoot staright from the hip. Go home and bake cookies, Stahl seems to be saying. Play nice or don't play at all. What a load of ***.
Stahl has really disappointed me tonight. - Reply to this comment
- Nancy Pelosi is awesome. And I give her credit for having the guts to call Bush exactly what he is. Any one who doesn't like Nancy is just repeating what the republicans want them to. She is certainly NOT going to be pampering terrorists and all the other *** they say about her. Take 15 minutes and go to her website and read the bills she is responsible for. More armour for the troops is one of them. I am sick of the name calling on her. Give me a break!

- I'm not sure impeachment is off the table, and it's misguided and premature for Pelosi to say so. Henry Waxman and John Conyers have multiple investigations pending of what may turn out to be serious criminal activity, and impeachment may turn out to be a natural consequence of an oversight process that is long overdue. It didn't have to happen this way. Republicans could have governed with integrity and honesty, but they chose their sleazy path instead. Perhaps when all is said and done, the Bush/Cheney crime syndicate will be forced to resign in disgrace after just a few months.
That would make Nancy Pelosi President by default, and I hope she chooses Howard Dean as her VP. I'm The Subway Serenade and I approved this comment. - Reply to this comment
- why feature any politician who forgets why they were elected and whose goal in life is to oppose "anything coming from the Whitehouse", and to punish any Democrat who votes with Republican - no matter the value of the legislation to the people?

- Pelosi turned a lot of people off from her comments this evening. She does not deserve to be the next speaker - she needs to go back to California. She came out in the interview as arrogant, know-it-all woman, and yes, thick skinned. I am disgusted and disappointed with her views.

- Pelosi is no different than the other caustic party leaders. She should be more respectful to the President. There are politicians on both sides just like her. They all show disrespect to their offices.
